By nine o’clock, Whitmore Global was buzzing, but tension lingered. Everyone knew Mr. Williams was not a man anyone wanted to disappoint.

Annie Williams settled into her chair and switched on her computer. She had barely opened her email when Sophie Bennett dropped into the seat opposite her with a sigh.

“If I disappear before lunch, tell my family I loved them.”

Annie glanced up. “Did you finish that assignment?”

“No. I dreamed about finishing it. In the dream, I submitted everything, Mr. Williams smiled, and someone handed me a check for emotional damages.”

Annie laughed quietly.

Sophie pushed a thick folder aside. She had spent hours organizing documents, only to discover that several departments had supplied outdated records.

“And guess what?” Sophie continued. “He wants the updated version before noon.”

“Then you should start working instead of delivering your last words.”

“You have no compassion.”

“I have a job to keep.”

Sophie leaned closer. “Do you think he's trying to replace Mr. Williams?”

Annie kept her attention on the screen. “We should finish our work and let the people in charge worry.”

“Easy for you to say.”

“It's advice. Ignore it.”

Sophie sighed quietly before returning to work.

Across the office, a junior employee struggled with a report Mr. Williams had ordered him to redo. Another email had arrived with instructions contradicting the first.

“That poor man looks like he's reconsidering every decision that led him here.”

“He probably is,” Annie murmured.

“Should we help him?”

“And explain to Mr. Williams why we abandoned our own work? No, thank you.”

Before Sophie could respond, the office doors opened.

Mr. Williams stepped out, immaculate as always in a dark suit and perfectly knotted tie. His expression was controlled, but his eyes moved across the room with the sharpness of someone searching for a mistake.

Conversations died.

He stopped beside the junior employee's desk.

“Have you completed the revisions?”

“I'm working on them, sir. I just need clarification on the figures you asked me to change. The original report uses the approved format, but the new instructions—”

“Are you telling me you don't understand a simple assignment?”

“No, sir. I only wanted to confirm—”

“Then stop wasting time and produce the report.”

The young man swallowed his remaining words.

Mr. Williams continued down the aisle, leaving him staring at the screen.

Annie disliked watching someone get punished for doing his job, but knew speaking up could make her the next target. She returned to work.

Several floors above, Jeremy Whitmore sat behind the expansive desk in his new office, looking at a stack of reports as though they had personally offended him.

He had expected to review operations, but every department seemed to have its own system and explanation for its delays.

He picked up a report and skimmed the first few pages.

“Why does this department need three separate approvals for a routine purchase?”

Ray, standing across from the desk with a folder beneath his arm, checked the document.

“Mr. Williams prefers multiple levels of authorization. He believes it reduces mistakes.”

Jeremy leaned back. “Does it?”

Ray hesitated. “I couldn't say for certain, sir.”

“Then perhaps you should find out.”

“Would you like me to prepare a comparison of the current process and the alternatives?”

“Now you're thinking.”

Jeremy pushed the report toward him.

“Find out how much time these approvals cost the company. Look into the other departments, too. I want numbers, not a presentation about how wonderfully everything has always been done.”

Ray made a note. Jeremy was casual and sometimes dismissive, but unwilling to accept explanations simply because they came from senior employees.

“Anything else, sir?” Ray asked.

“Yes. Ask the department heads to submit their current procedures by the end of the week. I want to see how this place actually operates.”

Ray paused. “I'll inform them.”

His father had handed him a respected company and employees accustomed to answering to someone else. They probably expected him to make speeches, sign documents, and eventually lose interest. They had underestimated him.

Jeremy liked challenges when they were difficult enough to hold his attention. If certain people had built comfortable little kingdoms inside his father's company, he was perfectly willing to disturb them.

Back on Annie's floor, an email notification appeared on her screen.

She opened it, expecting another routine instruction. Instead, it was a notice about an internal review of departmental procedures. Employees were being asked to ensure that their records were accurate and up to date.

“Wonderful,” Sophie muttered after reading the notice over her shoulder. “Because apparently we didn't have enough work.”

Annie exhaled and began opening the relevant files. She had no idea the review had come directly from Jeremy Whitmore. It was another company-wide request, and she intended to handle it efficiently.

A few minutes later, Mr. Williams received the same notice.

He read it once, then again, his expression hardening.

The review itself was not unusual. Its timing was. Jeremy had barely settled in, yet he was already questioning systems Mr. Williams had managed for years.

He placed the email down and stared at it.

For the first time that morning, his irritation gave way to something sharper.

Jeremy Whitmore was not simply settling into his new position. He was preparing to examine everything.

And Mr. Williams had no intention of making that easy for him.

Jeremy walked ahead, with Annie following a few feet behind him, carrying his tablet, phone and a leather folder. They arrived at a set of double doors, and one of the security personnel immediately opened them.Inside was a private reception reserved for important guests and high-level business meetings. The space was beautifully designed, with floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city. Elegant leather sofas, marble-topped tables and contemporary furniture gave the room a sophisticated urban feel. Warm lighting complemented the neutral interiors, while a modern art piece added character to one of the walls.Everything about the place spoke of understated luxury. Two men were already seated in the reception area, with glasses of water and coffee arranged neatly on the table before them. One appeared to be in his late twenties, while the other was in his mid-thirties.Both were impeccably dressed. The younger man wore a well-fitted olive-green suit over a black shirt, paired

Annie stepped into the office, and the door clicked shut behind her.Her heart beat hard against her ribs. Jeremy Whitmore sat behind his desk, studying a document. He did not acknowledge her immediately, and the silence made her nerves worse. When he finally raised his eyes, his gaze settled on her.Something about her face seemed familiar. He was certain he had seen her somewhere, but the memory would not come. He studied her for another second, then set the document aside. Her appearance was strikingly different from the two occasions she had served him at the Velvet Room. There, attendants wore heavier makeup and seductive outfits as part of the establishment's standard. Here, Annie's hair was neatly pulled back, her makeup was light, and her cream blouse and black trousers gave her a polished, professional look.Even dressed simply, she was stunningly beautiful.Annie stood in front of his desk, hands clasped together to keep them still. Jeremy's attention made her increasingly c

Ray walked a few steps ahead of Jeremy as they returned to the executive office. He opened the door and stepped aside, allowing Jeremy to enter first.Jeremy crossed the spacious room, loosened his tie and removed his suit jacket before settling behind his desk. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered an impressive view of the city, while dark wooden furnishings, leather chairs and carefully selected artwork gave the office an understated elegance.Ray remained standing near the entrance, waiting for his usual dismissal. However, Jeremy seemed distracted. He leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed somewhere beyond his desk. His fingers tapped lightly against the armrest as his thoughts returned to the same question.Where had he seen that woman?Annie Williams. Her face was familiar. He was certain of it, yet he couldn't remember where their paths had crossed. It shouldn't have mattered. She was simply an employee he had encountered during his tour. But uncertainty had a way of getting

Jeremy had barely disappeared around the corner when Sophie pushed her chair back. She crossed the aisle and stopped beside Annie's desk, one hand on her hip."Have you completely lost your mind?"Annie flinched. "Good morning.""Don't good-morning me." Sophie leaned closer, lowering her voice without lowering her excitement. "You fell asleep. At your desk. In front of the chief executive.""I know, Sophie.""Do you?" Sophie widened her eyes. "You looked like a company liability."Annie fought a smile, pulled her chair in, and returned to the unfinished document."I'm working now. Please."Sophie glanced towards the corridor. "Can we discuss the important part?""There is a more important part?""Jeremy Whitmore."Annie's fingers paused above the keyboard.Sophie clasped her hands beneath her chin. "Oh, my God. Did you see his eyes?"Annie slowly turned her head. "I was standing right in front of him. It would've been difficult not to.""Those eyes. And that face. He's so cute. It's a

Annie had not intended to fall asleep at work. She had genuinely tried to stay awake that morning. But after spending most of the previous night at the hospital, worrying about her mother's condition and trying to keep her younger siblings calm, her body had practically given up on her.The hospital visit had been exhausting. There had been waiting, questions, medical bills, and the constant uncertainty that came with watching someone you loved struggle with an illness. Even after she eventually returned home, Annie barely had enough time to rest before getting ready for work. She had slept for only a few hours.By the time she settled at her workstation that morning, her eyelids felt unbearably heavy. She had promised herself she would close them for just a minute.Apparently, that minute had become considerably longer. Her head rested on her folded arms, her dark hair falling loosely around her face. One hand was still close to her computer mouse, while her screen displayed an unfin

The tour continued beyond the executive floor. Ray walked a few steps ahead of Jeremy, occasionally turning to explain the different departments they passed. He introduced the heads of several offices, mentioned their responsibilities, and explained how the departments were structured. At every stop, the reaction was almost identical. Surprise. Some department heads immediately stood when Jeremy entered. Others hurriedly put aside whatever they were doing, clearly unprepared for the chief executive's unexpected appearance. Jeremy, however, did not seem particularly interested in the excitement his presence caused. He greeted them briefly, listened when necessary, and observed their surroundings. He was not there to question their performance or demand explanations. He simply wanted to see the company for himself, beyond the reports and presentations that usually reached his desk. Ray noticed how little Jeremy spoke. He seemed more interested in observing than participating. O
