Mag-log inMy back slammed against the door, my breaths shallow and heavy, I tried to move but his hold remained firm. “ What are you doing? Chris is in the other room.” I whispered. He drew closer, the distance between us vanishing in one step. His tatted arms braced the door, caging me between them. “ The same Chris who's on a date with another woman?” His brows lifted almost mockingly. My pride took a hit but still I met his gaze, holding my ground. “ It's fake.” “ It isn't.” He tilted his head, I wanted to say something to defend Chris but when his lips rested on my nape in a soft subtle graze, the rest of my words died in my throat— “ If I had you…” he planted another kiss. “ I would never make you a second option.” ****** When Zinnia’s older brother has to leave the country for a year for a business trip, he sends her to live with his best friend who also happens to be Zinnia's secret long-distance boyfriend. When she gets there, she sees the man she loves in the arms of another. He tells her it's fake. That his parents arranged it for a business deal, that he'll come back to her. She believes him. But his older brother doesn't seem to agree. He mocks her, makes her mad but beneath? He wants her and would do anything to have her. A bet. “ If my brother leaves her for you, I'll vanish and never bother you again.” He leaned close, my throat tightened. “ But if he doesn't, I'll pursue you, endlessly.” Now Zinnia must do everything to ruin the marriage and also not hurt her boyfriend in the process but what happens when she starts to fall for the very person she swore she wouldn't?

“Have you landed?” Bruno asked, and I groaned, my body collapsing onto a wooden bench. “I landed three hours ago! And still no sign of Chris! He promised he would be here, and yet he isn’t.” I tried to control my anger. As much as I wanted to vent my frustration, I didn’t want my brother finding out that Chris and I were something more. It would kill him. And ruin everything. “It’s okay. I’ll call him. He’s probably busy.” “He probably is…” “Don’t move around too much. Just sit and wait for him, okay?” I rolled my eyes. “I’m 26, Bruno. I’ll be fine.” “But you’re still my baby sister, and I have the right to worry about you.” Classic Bruno. Treating me like a child even in my twenties. Once again, this proved my point, he would murder Chris if he found out about us. But I was going to tell him… soon. Or probably never… He ended the call, and I tried Chris’s line again, grabbing my suitcase as I headed toward a nearby restaurant. The call went straight to voicemail—it didn’t even ring. With a sigh, I made my order and returned to the bench. I exhaled deeply, refusing to let the negative energy ruin my mood. Instead, I focused on the good things—like what we would do together. Finally, Chris would be able to take me on a proper date. In public. Without my brother’s prying eyes. Ugh, it felt so good. My mind raced with possibilities, excitement bubbling through me. I took a small sip of my smoothie, savoring the taste, when a black Aston Martin screeched to a reckless stop nearby. I jumped, and my poor smoothie slipped from my fingers, crashing to the ground. Could my day get any worse? Before I could curse the driver out, a man stepped out, worry etched on his face. His eyes scanned me quickly before he exhaled in relief. “I am so sorry, miss—wait—” Realization struck. He pulled out his phone, glanced at it, then looked back at me. “You’re Miss Zinnia Maxwell!” I nodded slowly. He ran his fingers through his hair, exhaling. “Master Chris asked me to get you!” He didn’t forget me. I knew he wouldn’t. Warmth bloomed in my stomach. “Please, let me help you!” I smiled, handing him my suitcase. “You should’ve been here earlier. I’ve been waiting for hours,” I said, crossing my arms as he closed the trunk. “I’m sorry, miss. There was a bit of traffic, and I had to go pick—” “Mr. Axel.” A low, crisp voice came from inside the car. My gaze followed the sound, and a small gasp slipped from my lips. The man inside looked dangerously handsome. Brown, tousled hair fell over his forehead. His sharp features screamed perfection. Tattoos snaked over his skin… and his eyes—Brown and silver, hidden behind clear lenses. “Do I have to remind you that we have somewhere to be?” His voice cut through the air, and I realized I had been staring. Shit. Heat scorched my cheeks as I quickly looked away, focusing instead on a far less attractive trash can. “I’m sorry, sir. This is Miss Zinnia—the lady Master Chris asked us to bring,” Axel introduced, and I could feel the man’s gaze settle on me. I swallowed. How could someone be so intimidating? “Are you getting in, or would you prefer to walk?” he asked. I walked to the already opened door and stepped in. Axel offered me a smile before closing it behind me. The car hummed as the ride began. The man beside me remained silent, his attention fixed on a tablet as he typed away. The quiet stretched between us, thick and suffocating, mixed with the scent of his expensive cologne. Unconsciously, I stole glances at him, but quickly looked away, pretending to scroll through my phone. “Stop.” He finally spoke. The car came to a halt. He stepped out in front of what looked like a jewelry store, shutting the door behind him and for some reason, I could finally breathe. “Why did you stop?” I asked, turning to Axel. “Oh, Sir Grayson has to get a gift.” “A gift? For who?” “His brother. It’s his engagement party today.” My brows furrowed slightly. The door opened again, and Grayson stepped back in shortly after. The car resumed its journey, and a few minutes later, we arrived at a very expensive-looking building. My gaze barely lingered on it—especially when it landed on Chris. He stood outside, talking to an elderly couple, his lips stretched into a smile. It had been so long. So long since I’d seen him. We had FaceTimed and called countless times. Even though he was always busy, I still saw him—but now, now that he was right in front of me… He looked even more handsome than before. My heart skipped, my fingers itching to pull him close and breathe him in. As soon as Axel parked, I jumped out, my feet moving faster than I thought possible. But before I could reach him, a red-haired girl walked out from inside, meeting him with a smile—a smile too wide to be friendly. I froze. No. Before my brain could catch up, he leaned in… and kissed her. My steps faltered. My heart dropped, sharp and sudden, like something inside me had snapped out of place. I tried to convince myself I was imagining things. It was probably jet lag and Exhaustion. But when I blinked, the image didn’t disappear. No. It wasn’t true. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t. My eyes burned with unshed tears as I slowly walked toward him. “C-Chris…” My voice came out as a broken whisper. I could barely hear myself. He didn’t notice at first but when he did, something flickered in his eyes. Yet he didn’t pull away. “What is this?” My voice grew louder as I reached him, pulling him away from her. I ignored the glares and confused looks from the elderly couple. “What are you doing?” he snapped, yanking his arm back, his brows furrowing in anger. The girl moved closer to him, her face twisted with concern. “Are you okay?” she asked, checking his arm. “Who is she?” My voice trembled, clinging desperately to hope that they were just friends. Friends kiss, right? No. They didn’t. A voice whispered in my head, but I refused to believe it. “She’s my fiancée.”The time with Chris was amazing—he'd bought me ice cream, gifts, and so much more, but later he went to meet Elara for a public outing.A very imperfect way to end the evening. Now I was alone.Alone with my thoughts. And the demons that plagued my mind.I pulled out my phone, needing a distraction. I scrolled through my contact list until my finger landed on Iyra.I dialed her number, and on the third ring she picked up. Red lights bathed the screen, followed by the muffled sound of loud music.Iyra appeared shortly after, sweat and hair clinging to her face, her chest heaving as though she'd been dancing. She wore a frown.“You really know how to ruin a girl's evening.”I chuckled.“What? Having fun?”“Well, yes,” she grumbled. “That's all I can do since my best friend left me to go spend the entire summer with her boyfriend.”“Oh, come on. It's not like that.”“It is like that.”“You should get your own boyfriend, or you can come here. Then you'll stop feeling so lonely.”She sighe
***Zinnia’s POV***We reached the police station shortly, my heart raging in unsteady rhythms, my fingers tapping impatiently against my lap. We’d only been here for a few minutes, but it felt like hours.People came and left. And the disappointed looks on some of their faces didn't help soothe the panic rising in my chest.I knew Bruno was fine.He had to be.But what would I do if he wasn't?That thought sent a chill down my spine.Chris pressed my hand tightly, assuring me with one of his signature smiles. I released a shallow breath. Once, twice. Then the tension fled from my insides. For now.“Zinnia Maxwell!”That's me!My head snapped up immediately. An older-looking officer gestured for us to follow him.I jumped to my feet and followed him until we got to a small office. He settled into his chair before asking us to sit in the chairs opposite him.“Thank you for seeing us,” Chris said, a light smile touching his lips. The officer nodded.“Tell me what happened.”“My brother.
**Zinnia’s POV**Two palms stood before me like an open book. One belonged to the man who loved me but had also unintentionally hurt me multiple times. The other belonged to the man who made my heart race without permission, who always had me on edge, wondering what he'd do next.My throat worked with a swallow. What was I going to do?A voice screamed Chris. I wouldn't say he had changed, but I at least wanted to give him a chance to earn my forgiveness. But then there was that small voice, that very small, incomprehensible voice, whispering about the possibility of enjoying some time with Grayson.I sighed and turned to Grayson. His lips were tilted in his usual confident smirk.“I'm sorry, but you have to go. And stop coming to my practice. Just stop all this, please…”With each word, I watched as his smirk faded until his lips flattened and his face hardened. But he didn't say a word. His gaze lingered a second longer before he turned and walked to his car, driving off into the du
**Grayson's POV**I wasn’t stupid.I knew who my father was. He’d probably told her to keep me in my place, to protect his perfect son, and honestly, I didn’t mind.My gaze flicked up as I took in the sheer size of the building—its top scraped the sky, disappearing into the clouds. I sucked in a breath, tucking my fingers into my pockets as I made for the door.Regarding the Black Vipers case, Jin traced one of their most recent dealings to this place. My eyes raked the building once more as I took another step, guards blocking me, their faces stern.I pulled out my card, rolling my eyes. One of them leaned down, scanning the card, then my face, then back at the card.“Just because you’re an officer—”“Detective,” I corrected. He eyed me, then cleared his throat as he continued.“Detective… doesn’t mean you get to wander wherever you want.”“Do you have a warrant?” the other guard spoke.I reached into my pocket, about to pull it out, when a car pulled to a stop. A man stepped out—bro
**Zinnia's POV**Chris tugged at my sleeve, pulling me along until we got to a room. Elara had excused herself to use the restroom, so it was just us. His nails dug into my skin, pain shooting up my arm.“Hey, let me go! What’s with you?” I snapped, his eyes burning with a mixture of rage and jealo
