Teach Me
Author: Jelena Fundak

Prologue

"Stupid anatomy!" I began to fuss over the pages of Human anatomy, as I always do when I study, and I don't want to. Am I really the only person in this world who is so interested in medicine, who really want to learn about human body without actually learning anatomy? I mean, who even came up with all that Latin names for literally every little bone, muscle and blood vessels we have.

Big test today my ass.

Who even forced me to go to medical school if I knew how much I have to learn every day, and the day after that, and the day after that too! Shaking my head when I think about the reason why, became a regular twitch. And that reason is, neither more nor less, the Head surgeon of Seattle hospital. Of course, my mother. Tending to medicine comes naturally, they say. Like mother, like daughter. Maybe not in our case. I mean, don't get me wrong, the idea of becoming a surgeon is more then appealing and I always dreamed about becoming someone who can save another one's life! I am just not sure I want to become a mere shadow of her, most flawless women everyone's know. I am just a normal girl with a normal life and most important, a girl who is eager to learn and find her place in this world.

My ass.

"Stop moaning and get ready! We will be late and do you know who hates that? Huh?" Hannah's voice always struck me like a huge thunderbolt. I heard her throughout our apartment and I knew she is ready to come and get me! Her weird nature tend to surprise me almost every day. One time she is super excited for class, the other times well, she's just... Me.

"Fuck, Gorilla!" I snapped from my self-pity when well-known face of an old woman popped in my head. I think that everyone has that on teacher that gives them chills. That one teacher who, and you know that for sure, it has every power to put you down and would when and if the opportunity is right. Chills went down my spine and I shook a little remembering I will see her today, the very first day of our new chapter on this journey to become well paid, I mean- well respected surgeons!

I got interrupted by my same-aged best friend and my roommate, Hannah Brown. She's nothing like me. Total opposite of my long blond hair and green eyes. She is so much prettier than me with her perfectly short black hair and those dark eyes which are always skillfully concealing her naughty side. We are best friends since high school when she planted one of our professor a dead rat in principal's office. The moment I saw her, I knew she has her bad side that would take me in trouble instantly! I like that about her, because, to be honest, I wasn't such an angel myself.

"Why are you here? Princess couldn't get what she wanted today?" She looked at me, narrowing her eyes as she clicked with her tongue.

"What? No." I said offendedly. "Why are YOU here?" I pointed out the 'you' part just on purpose as I reflexively rolled my eyes at her.

"I'm Hannah. Hannah Brown." She said visibly annoyed. I opened my eyes widely as I remembered that on my way here, a few students mentioned a girl named Hannah that hide a real dead rat in principal's office this morning! Oh my God, she is so brave! Stupid, but brave! I improved my posture purely out of respect for this young lady and I smiled acidly. You know, she is obviously dangerous after all!

"My name is Jessica Miller." I smiled again as I reached my hand for hers. Of course she didn't take it so I quickly pulled it back and slowly leaned on my chair. I felt really stupid.

"So Princess, tell me. Who did you piss off?" She asked teasingly. It was my turn now to roll my eyes.

"No one. Just trying to see if my mom would react. She never came here, I'm not even sure she knows where my school is so.. You know, just trying to..."

"Get her reaction. Got it." Hannah finnished the sentence for me. I felt some kind of empathy in her voice so I felt a little ashamed. I came out wrong, she will avoid me during the rest of our years here, that's for sure. Nobody wants to hang out with 'mommy issues girl"...

"You two!" We both twitched when our principal came storming in! "Why on Earth would you do that!" He continued to yell so I leaned back even more but not Hannah. She just sat there as if nothing is going on! Wow! "Who would do such a thing! Why?!" He was pacing up and down and my head was just following his red face as it went from bright red to more of a rotten cherry red. Hannah chuckled for a second and I froze. Is she really not scared?

"You." He stopped pacing and leaned his red face towards her, placing his hands on his desk. "One thing is making small stupid things almost every day Brown but dead rat? A DEAD RAT?" He yelled again and I swallowed a huge dumpling. Hannah was still sitting straight in her chair, not with even a small reaction! How?!

"You crossed your line her miss! You really did! I told you last time, one more of your pranks and you are out!" He said pushing himself backwards as he finally sat down at his desk.

"What? No!" Hannah jumped and I twitched again. This was her first sign of any emotion!

"I'm done with you Brown. Done." He calmly said as he wrote something on the paper.

"No please. I am sorry, I really can't be expelled from another school! My dad is going to kill me!" She started talking really fast and I realised she is genuinely scared!

"Well-"

"I did it!" I interrupted him as I jumped up. My body started shaking really bad but I was totally down for this!

"Miss Miller." He looked me sadly. "I know who did it."

"No. It was me. Not Hannah. Expel me." I stood by my ground. He didn't say a word, he just sighed deeply. I was still holding my breath not knowing what to do next. All I could think about is how my mom will be super pissed and I kind of liked that idea.

"Listen to me. Both of you. Stop doing whatever this is and start learning. Focus on that instead of doing pranks. Especially with dead animals. I will not make a fuss now but do one more thing? You are both expelled. Am I making myself clear?"

"Yes."

"Yes."

"Why did you do that?" Hannah asked me when we came out of principal's office.

"Oh you mean thank you." I looked at her and smiled.

"Thank you Princess." She hugged me and walked away. I smiled complacently and walked away too. Oh we will so going to meet again in this office!

"Yes, Gorilla. It's not like this is a first year..." She rolled her eyes as she came in my room. "One may think it's able to get used to that stupid face from year to year-" She started but I interrupted her by moaning loudly.

"It's our second year, I know. But it's the beginning of the year, and you know beginnings are hard." I was still packing my books in my, to brag a little, Armani black bag with premeditated and sore feeling in my guts knowing that the first professor I'll see today is Gorilla. To be precise, mrs.Tomlinson. She is a very small but strong woman in her late 40's, with bleached hair and a hint of gray hairs and of course, very strict and serious look. She basically looks like those grannies which parents tells you not to get too close because she's too weird. Hated by 564 students of University of Washington, medical school where students are pretending to be sick whenever they have her on their schedule.

"Don't be such a cuckoo." Hannah told me, rolling her eyes at me, waiting by the door with her books. Although, she is a A+ student, she always carries 2, or 3 books tops, a small notebook and a pencil in her hands, if she finds one. Me, on example, wears a bag full of books, lots of pencils, my phone, make-up and my favorite magazine, Cosmopolitan. I go nowhere if I don't have my Cosmo with me. Gotta have my Cosmo. Not that it's important for a future surgeon but you know...

"I heard there's a new sexy professor in Latin." She added playing cheerfully with her pencil in her mouth. She knows I hate to see that. But don't judge. Being a medicine student gives you a third eye which gives you microscopic examination of bacteries all around you. She hates it too. But that only means she will do that just because it annoys me. I sighed deeply and finally stood up.

"Yea? Who?" Suddenly, I started packing my bag a little faster then I used to when I realized, I don't have Latin until Wednesday. Hannah noticed my disappointed face and smiled huskily.

"Oh for the Love of God Princess. You'll get wrinkles before thirties!" She said teasingly and smiled. When I remembered that I really have to go, that my plan of staying here lying on the couch and making a pig of myself by eating chips isn't a plan that will provide me money, I decided to walk through that door. With Hannah, my spirit animal and my other half, the person who is more excited to go to school than some biggest nerd.

Leaving my beloved couch, I was ready to face Gorilla.
