Chapter 1: Getaway Sex

ARIA

The salt air clung to my skin like a second layer of clothing, thick and humid. I leaned my forehead against the cool glass of the passenger window, watching the Malibu coastline blur into a smudge of gold and turquoise. My chest felt like someone had hollowed it out with a rusted spoon, leaving a jagged hole where my heart used to be. Three years of my life evaporated in a single twenty-minute conversation about "finding himself" and "emotional incompatibility."

Mika gripped the steering wheel of her vintage convertible, her blonde hair whipping around her face in a chaotic halo. She glanced at me, her eyes narrowing.

"Stop it. Right now."

I didn't move.

"The moping, Aria. The funeral face. We are in the land of overpriced smoothies and beach bums. You are not allowed to be a ghost for the next two months." Mika sighed.

I shifted my gaze to her, my voice sounding thin even to my own ears.

"I feel like a ghost. I think I actually died in the parking lot of that apartment."

Mika braked hard as we pulled into the driveway of her family's beach house, a sprawling white monstrosity of glass and cedar that looked like it belonged in an architectural digest. She killed the engine and turned in her seat, her expression dead serious.

"That's exactly why we're doing this. A total system reset," she said.

I climbed out of the car, the sand crunching under my sandals. The house loomed over us, promising luxury and a temporary escape from the silence of my own head.

"A system reset? What does that even mean?" I don’t understand what she means.

Mika followed me inside, the cool air of the foyer hitting me like a wave. She dropped her keys on a marble console table with a loud clatter and stepped into my personal space, poking a finger against my shoulder.

"You're stuck in a loop. You're thinking about him, wondering why, analyzing the wreckage. We need to shock your system. A catalyst."

I frowned, stepping back toward the oversized living room that opened up to the Pacific.

"I'm not in the mood for a catalyst." I defend myself from her accusations.

"You're not in the mood for anything, which is exactly the problem."

Mika poured two glasses of chilled prosecco from a bottle already waiting on the counter. She handed one to me, her eyes gleaming with a mischievous spark that usually signaled trouble.

"A pact. A blood oath. A summer mandate."

I took a sip of the bubbles, the acidity sharp on my tongue.

"I'm listening, but if this involves a makeover, I'm leaving,” I said.

"No makeovers. Just a challenge. The very first guy you meet, and I mean actually meet, like, have a conversation with, you have to have a one-night stand with him."

I nearly choked on the champagne. I coughed, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. "Are you insane? I can't even look at a man without wanting to cry or scream. I'm not just jumping into bed with some stranger."

"That's the point. It's not about romance. It's not about 'finding the one.' It's about taking your body back. It's about remembering that you're a physical being, not just a floating ball of sadness." Mika said with a stern face.

I looked out at the ocean, the tide pulling back from the shore in a rhythmic hiss. The idea was absurd. It was reckless. It was exactly the kind of chaos I didn't think I had the energy for. But the hole in my chest felt wider today, and the thought of spending August staring at the ceiling of a guest room felt like a death sentence.

"What if he's a creep?" I asked, even though I don’t want to entertain Mika’s idea.

"Then you leave. But the goal is the act. The friction. The distraction,” she answered matter-of-factly.

I set the glass down on the coaster, the bubbles still dancing in my vision.

"Fine. The first guy. One night. No strings. No names." I decide. The idea is bad but I think I need to do something out of the box. Something that maybe I’ll regret later.

But now I need it so I don’t have to think about Josh anymore.

Josh.

My high school sweetheart.

Now he’s my ex.

The douchebag.

Mika beamed, throwing her arms around my neck. "Perfect. Now get dressed. There's a club in the hills that doesn't check IDs if you look like you own the place. We're going out."

**

The club was a sensory assault. Neon violet lights sliced through a haze of artificial smoke, and the bass thrummed so deeply I could feel it in my molars. I wore a black slip dress that felt like a second skin, the silk sliding against my thighs with every step. I felt exposed, fragile, and strangely invisible.

Mika was already in her element, dancing with a group of strangers, her laughter lost in the roar of the music. I drifted toward the bar, my shoulder brushing against people who smelled of expensive gin and desperation. I leaned against the polished mahogany, staring at the amber liquid in my glass, wondering if I was actually capable of doing this.

"You look like you're contemplating a crime or a getaway."

The voice was deep, a rich baritone that cut through the noise without needing to shout. I turned my head slowly.

He was standing a few feet away, leaning against the bar with a casual, predatory grace. He wasn't a boy. He was a man, mid-forties, perhaps. He wore a charcoal suit with the top two buttons of his white shirt undone, no tie. His hair was dark, salted with silver at the temples, and his eyes were a piercing, intelligent grey that seemed to strip away every layer of my pretense.

I felt a sudden, sharp jolt of electricity shoot down my spine. This wasn't the clumsy attraction I'd felt with my ex. This was something heavier. Something grounded.

"Maybe both," I replied, my voice steadier than I expected.

He shifted closer, the scent of cedarwood and expensive bourbon enveloping me. He didn't crowd me, but his presence filled the space, making the rest of the crowded room fade into a blur of neon.

"Which one is it? The crime or the getaway?"

"I haven't decided yet." I smiled at him. Suddenly I remember my pact with Mika.

He’s the first guy I talked to, so does it mean I had to do a one-night-stand with him?

I have never done that before. Josh was my first-first kiss, first boyfriend, first sex. I never had a chance to flirt with another guy because Josh is always in my life.

He smiled, a slow, knowing curve of his lips that didn't reach his eyes. His eyes remained focused on mine, intense and searching.

"I've always preferred the getaway. The anticipation of the flight is usually better than the destination."

I tilted my head, glancing at the way his cufflink caught the purple light. "And where would you be fleeing to?"

"Wherever the noise stops," he murmured. He reached out, his fingers barely grazing the skin of my forearm. The contact was electric, a searing heat that made my breath hitch. "You don't belong here. You're too quiet for a place this loud."

"Is that a problem?"

"On the contrary. It's the only interesting thing in the room."

My heart hammered against my ribs, not with the ache of heartbreak, but with a sudden, violent surge of desire. The pact echoed in my mind. The first guy.

"I don't usually do this," I whispered.

"Neither do I," he lied, the smirk returning. "But I suspect we're both looking for a distraction."

He didn't ask for my name. I didn't offer mine. The anonymity was a shield, making the tension between us feel dangerous and permissible. He leaned in, his lips brushing against the shell of my ear, his breath hot against my skin.

"There's a back exit. It's quiet. Dark. And far away from the music."

I didn't answer with words. I simply turned and started walking, knowing he was right behind me.

My heart drummed faster while I walked to the back exit. I know this is a bad idea but I don’t give a damn.

I need a man to erase everything Josh left behind.

The transition from the thumping bass of the club to the cool, midnight air of the alley was jarring. The noise became a muffled hum, replaced by the distant sound of traffic and the drip of a leaky pipe. The alley was narrow, the brick walls stained with grime and age, lit only by a single flickering streetlamp at the far end.

The moment the heavy steel door clicked shut behind us, he slammed me against the brick wall.

The impact wasn't hard, but it was sudden, pinning me between the cold stone and the heat of his body. I gasped, my hands instinctively flying up to his chest, feeling the hard muscle beneath the fine fabric of his shirt.

"Still want the getaway?" he rasped.

I didn't speak. I grabbed the lapels of his jacket and pulled him down, crashing my lips against his. He tasted bourbon and hunger. The kiss was aggressive, a collision of teeth and tongue that mirrored the desperation I'd been suppressing for months. He groaned into my mouth, his hands sliding down to grip my hips, hoisting me up.

I wrapped my legs around his waist, my dress riding up to my hips. He groaned again, a low, guttural sound that vibrated through my chest. He broke the kiss to trail his lips down my neck, biting softly at the junction where my shoulder met my throat.

"You're shaking," he whispered against my skin.

"I'm not," I lied, though my entire body was trembling.

He shifted his grip, his hand sliding under the silk of my dress, his palm hot against my thigh. He moved upward, his fingers finding the lace of my underwear and hooking into the fabric. I arched my back, pressing myself closer to him, the rough brick of the wall scraping against my shoulder blades.

He didn't waste time with gentleness. He pushed the lace aside and entered me in one fluid, powerful thrust.

I let out a sharp, strangled cry, my head snapping back against the wall. The fullness of him was overwhelming, a sudden invasion that filled the void in my chest with a searing, physical heat. He froze for a second, his forehead resting against mine, his breathing ragged.

"You okay?"

I nodded frantically, my fingers digging into his shoulders.

"Don't stop."

He didn't. He began to move, a slow, rhythmic grind that hit every nerve ending with precision. The alley was cold, the wind whipping around us, but where our bodies met, it was molten. I clung to him, my eyes closed, focusing on the sensation of him filling me, the friction of the silk, the smell of the city and his cologne.

The pace accelerated. The slow burn turned into a wildfire. He gripped my thighs tighter, his thrusts becoming harder, deeper, driving me further into the brick. I could feel the vibration of his low moans in his chest, the way his muscles coiled and tightened with every movement.

I lost track of where I ended and he began. There was no heartbreak here, no memories of a failed relationship, no questioning of my worth. There was only the pressure, the heat, and the rhythmic slap of skin against skin.

I felt the tension build in the base of my stomach, a coil winding tighter and tighter until it snapped. I cried out, my body shuddering in a violent release that left me breathless and clinging to him for dear life. Seconds later, he stiffened, a deep growl escaping his throat as he surged into me one last time, his entire body shuddering against mine.

For a long minute, the only sound was our synchronized, heavy breathing. He slowly let me slide down his body until my feet hit the pavement. He stepped back, adjusting his clothes with a practiced efficiency, though his eyes were still dark, his pupils blown wide.

He reached out, brushing a stray lock of hair from my face. His expression was unreadable, something between satisfaction and a lingering curiosity.

"That was a very effective getaway."

I leaned against the wall, my legs still shaking, the cool air hitting my damp skin. I felt hollowed out, but in a different way. Emptied of the sadness, replaced by a heavy, humming exhaustion.

"I think I can handle the return trip now."

He smiled, that same enigmatic curve of the lips.

"Get home safe, stranger."

He turned and walked back toward the club, the steel door clanging shut behind him. I stood in the silence of the alley for a long time, the scent of him still clinging to my skin, before I started the walk back to the neon lights.
