Chapter 1

After quitting the "Proxy Girlfriend" group chat, I stopped replying to any of Tyrus' messages.

That night, I remembered the fifth-anniversary gift I had arranged to be sent to the restaurant I booked.

It was an album documenting our five years together from my five years of dating Tyrus.

The first page held the memory of him shielding me from bullies when I was seventeen.

The last page held a message I had left for our fifth-anniversary dinner.

[Tyrus, here's to the next five years.]

I rushed to the restaurant, hoping to retrieve the album before they arrived.

But when I pushed open the door, Tyrus and Claire were already sitting at the table I had reserved.

Claire was sitting across from Tyrus, wearing the anniversary necklace he had given me a few years back.

On the table were the set meals I had ordered in advance.

The candles and flowers had already been arranged.

Beside them lay a room key to the hotel suite upstairs.

The restaurant manager, Roland Kirk, stood awkwardly by the table, holding the personalized photo card I had customized.

The card read, [Happy 5th Anniversary, Tyrus & Layla!]

When Claire saw me, she deliberately swept her long hair aside, revealing the necklace.

Then, she pointed at the card and laughed. "Since I'm the one spending the anniversary with him today, doesn't it seem a little weird that it still has Lay-lay's name on it?"

Tyrus took the card directly and handed it back to Roland.

"Change the name to Claire.

"Put the couple's package and the hotel suite under her name, too."

I looked at him and said, "I prepared all of this a month in advance."

Not only did I pay for the hotel suite, but I also picked out the flowers, the cake, and the restaurant myself.

But Tyrus said with absolute certainty, "Didn't you say that you wanted her to be my permanent girlfriend?

"Now that we've actually shown up, you're regretting it?"

Claire took a photo with the renamed card, then, with a smile, she asked Roland to add a line underneath.

[Tyrus & Claire, Day One]

Just like that, they rewrote the card I had customized into the first day of their relationship

As she posed for the photo, the necklace around Claire's neck flipped over, exposing the engraving behind the pendant.

[Tyrus & Layla, 1st Anniversary]

That was the first gift Tyrus bought me after his first big payday.

He gave it to me and said with a smile, "Of course I'm spending my first paycheck on my future wife.

"Wear this until we get married."

Last time the proxy girlfriend thing started, Tyrus just took it straight out of my jewelry box.

He said he was just lending it to Claire for a few days and would only return it to me after I apologized.

When Claire saw the engraving, she took off the necklace and held it out to me, saying, "I should give this back to Lay-lay.

"I'm just a proxy girlfriend. It doesn't feel right wearing it."

Despite saying that, she showed no sign of returning it to me.

Tyrus reached out and stopped her. "I can just get it re-engraved."

Coincidentally, there was a store counter for this exact jewelry brand right downstairs from the restaurant.

  • The 30-Day Proxy   Chapter 10

A year later, I held a small gathering at my new home. There was no anniversary to celebrate, and no seats that had to come in pairs. It was just to celebrate my first full year of living here.Patricia gave me a new photo album. The first page held a photo taken on moving day.In the photo, the living room still had no furniture.I was sitting on a suitcase, holding the potted plant I had brought from my old home. The second page was a group photo after my promotion. The third page was my first solo trip. After that came friends, work, family, and plenty of everyday moments that no longer revolved around Tyrus. The last page was still blank.Patricia asked me with a smile, "Who's this one for?"I pondered, then said, "For whatever comes next."Perhaps I would meet someone new in the future, or I would keep filling the pages on my own.But whoever it was going to be, they would not have to replace anyone to earn a spot in my life. After the gathering, I received Tyrus' l

After leaving Tyrus, I realized I still carried a lot of old habits with me.When I disagreed with a colleague, I would instinctively apologize first. When a friend changed plans at the last minute, I would feel uncomfortable but still habitually say it was fine.Even when I was ordering at a restaurant and the server asked what I wanted, my first reaction was still to say, "Anything's fine."Tyrus had spent three years making me believe that every conflict was my fault. As long as I did not cave in first, he would change his profile picture, take Claire's hand, and take away even more of what belonged to me.So I grew more afraid to speak up, more afraid to say "no."On my first weekend after moving into my new place, a colleague, Patricia Lance, invited me out to dinner. She asked me, "Pizza or barbecue?"I said instinctively, "Either one's fine."She just laughed and pushed the menu back to me."Tonight's about celebrating your promotion."So, we're getting what you want

After the engagement was called off, Tyrus posted a statement in the mutual friends' group chat.He admitted the proxy girlfriend arrangement was never a game I had agreed to.The anniversary dinner, the hotel, and the wedding speech, he admitted, had all been prepared by me in advance. He had handed those things to Claire without my permission. At the end, he wrote, [Layla never came between me and Claire.][I was the one who went public with another woman and proposed to her without ever formally ending a five-year relationship.][It's entirely my fault.]The friends who had once egged him on at the wedding began apologizing to me.Some said, [We thought you two were just playing around.]Another explained, [Tyrus kept saying you'd definitely come back, so we didn't take it seriously.]Willow also sent me that speech draft again.[I'm sorry. Those memories were ours, but I let Claire deliver the speech in your place.]I did not rejoin that group.I only asked Tyrus to re

On the third day, Claire came to see me personally. She placed the anniversary necklace on the table. The pendant had been polished very thin. The name that had once belonged to me was completely gone. All that remained was this.[Tyrus & Claire, Day One]Claire stared at the necklace for a long time before letting go."Tyrus told me to give it back. He said it's yours."I put the necklace into a box.I did not thank her.Taking back what was mine did not require a thank-you in the first place.Claire sat across from me and did not leave for a long time."Lay-lay, if you just tell Tyrus you're never coming back, he'll go through with our engagement."He won't set a date right now."And he won't let me move in."I found it absurd."I already gave you the permanent girlfriend spot a month ago."If Tyrus won't go through with it, that's between the two of you."Tears welled up in her eyes. "But you're still the one he loves."I shook my head."What he loves is me get

After moving into my new place, I changed all my account passwords, canceled the shared memberships I had with Tyrus, and closed out our shared accounts.I even revoked access to our shared photo album from the past five years. The system prompted me, [Are you sure you want to leave this shared space?][If you leave, all data uploaded over the past five years will be permanently deleted. This can't be undone.]I chose confirm. The moment the page went blank, I did not feel as sad as I had imagined. The relationship was already over a long time ago. It ended the moment Tyrus started making Claire his proxy girlfriend, over and over again. The next day after work, Tyrus was waiting outside my office building. He had not slept all night. In his hand was the house key I had left behind."Why didn't you tell me your new address?"I walked around him.He stepped in front of me again."I already sent Claire home."She's not staying in our place."I looked at him and said, "That

Tyrus stood in the empty living room, calling my name multiple times. No one answered. He rushed into the bedroom. My half of the closet was completely empty. My documents, skincare products, and everyday medicine on the nightstand were all gone, too.Even the potted plant I had kept on the balcony for five years was missing. The only things left were the gifts he had given me: the matching watches, the anniversary decorations, and the fridge magnets from our trips together.I left behind everything that proved we had spent five years together.Tyrus picked up the booking confirmation from the moving company. The date on it was from twenty days ago.In other words, I had already started planning my exit before he even announced Claire was taking over.He assumed I had gone quiet because I was sulking, waiting for him to cave first. But I had not been waiting. I had been apartment hunting, sorting through my things, and quietly exiting his life bit by bit.Tyrus kept call
