Chapter 2

Author: Vesper
I followed Tyrus and Claire over to the store and gave him one final warning.

"Tyrus, this isn't some prop in your little proxy game."

After inspecting it, the jeweler also looked troubled.

"Grinding it off will thin the pendant.

"Once it's altered, there's no way to restore it completely."

Tyrus only glanced at me briefly, then said, "Do it."

Half an hour later, my name had been completely ground away.

On the back of the pendant, a new engraving appeared.

[Tyrus & Claire, Day One]

Claire put the necklace back on and returned to the table I had reserved with Tyrus.

The revised card sat between the two of them.

Tyrus also handed the hotel key to her.

When he saw that I was still standing in place, he revealed a satisfied expression.

"Apologize now, and I'll still have the manager cancel the hotel.

"I can even give you your spot as my girlfriend back early."

I did not answer.

I took back the photo album from Roland, which had still not been given out yet.

Before I left, I saw Claire lean into Tyrus' arms and take a photo with the customized card.

They were celebrating their first day together with the dinner, the hotel room, and the anniversary decorations I had set up.

Tyrus still thought all he had done was change a few words on a necklace.

He did not realize that he had also ground away the love I had held on to for five years.

Not long after the proxy period began, a mutual friend was getting married.

Tyrus and I had originally been invited to attend together.

We were also supposed to give a speech on stage as mutual friends.

I had written my speech in advance and discussed with Tyrus what we would wear that day.

But the day before the wedding, the bride, Willow Bayland, sent me a message.

[Lay-lay, Tyrus is bringing Claire as his plus-one this time.]

[If you come, you might end up stuck in a corner seat. But you have to be there.]

On the day of the wedding, the moment I walked into the hall, I spotted Tyrus at once.

Claire was wearing a dress in the same color as his tie, sitting right beside him.

They were seated right next to each other, so close that their chairs were practically touching. Their name cards sat side by side, as if they were a couple.

During the speech segment, Tyrus walked up to the stage.

He talked about his understanding of companionship, yet his gaze kept drifting toward Claire.

"Three years ago when I moved, Claire stayed up till dawn helping me pack. After that, I couldn't even find a cup in my own kitchen without asking her."

I stared blankly at the projector screen.

That day, he told me the movers had everything under control, and I did not need to show up, because I would only be in the way.

During his speech, he added, "Two years ago, when I had a severe stomachache while I was out of town, she drove four hours to the hospital to be with me.

"She stayed up all night with me. The next morning, she still remembered to bring breakfast for the whole project team."

That time, I called Tyrus more than a dozen times.

He only replied that the project was locked down and he could not stay in touch.

Our friends laughed as they joked, "How would Tyrus even function without Claire?"

Tyrus did not argue. Instead, he laughed along with them.

"Last year, when my mom had surgery, she stayed at the hospital for three days. Now whenever something comes up with my mom, she doesn't even call me first. She calls her."

I recalled that I had wanted to go to the hospital back then, too.

But he said his mother did not like seeing outsiders and told me not to come.

So I was the outsider all along.

Finally, he waved the speech draft in his hand.

"She sat with me to revise this speech seven times."

Claire smiled and raised her glass toward him.

In front of everyone, Tyrus took her hand.

Someone in the audience immediately started teasing them, "They're already acting like this, and she's still just a proxy?

"Some people just can't take a hint. They still don't know when to leave."

The hall erupted with laughter, as if my relationship were nothing more than a game for everyone's amusement.

Claire did not protest.

She took the opportunity to lean in close to Tyrus.

In every photo taken afterward, Claire stood right beside him.

She took my place on his arm, collected the wedding favors from friends, and joined the group chat for the next get-together as his girlfriend.

No one thought of her as a proxy anymore.

She had taken over my spot as his girlfriend, as if it had always been hers.

Back home, I left the friends' group chat.

I took the album out of the drawer and removed the photos page by page.

In the end, only a blank album remained.

It turned out that five years' worth of a relationship was much easier to walk away from than I expected.

A year later, I held a small gathering at my new home. There was no anniversary to celebrate, and no seats that had to come in pairs. It was just to celebrate my first full year of living here.Patricia gave me a new photo album. The first page held a photo taken on moving day.In the photo, the living room still had no furniture.I was sitting on a suitcase, holding the potted plant I had brought from my old home. The second page was a group photo after my promotion. The third page was my first solo trip. After that came friends, work, family, and plenty of everyday moments that no longer revolved around Tyrus. The last page was still blank.Patricia asked me with a smile, "Who's this one for?"I pondered, then said, "For whatever comes next."Perhaps I would meet someone new in the future, or I would keep filling the pages on my own.But whoever it was going to be, they would not have to replace anyone to earn a spot in my life. After the gathering, I received Tyrus' l

After leaving Tyrus, I realized I still carried a lot of old habits with me.When I disagreed with a colleague, I would instinctively apologize first. When a friend changed plans at the last minute, I would feel uncomfortable but still habitually say it was fine.Even when I was ordering at a restaurant and the server asked what I wanted, my first reaction was still to say, "Anything's fine."Tyrus had spent three years making me believe that every conflict was my fault. As long as I did not cave in first, he would change his profile picture, take Claire's hand, and take away even more of what belonged to me.So I grew more afraid to speak up, more afraid to say "no."On my first weekend after moving into my new place, a colleague, Patricia Lance, invited me out to dinner. She asked me, "Pizza or barbecue?"I said instinctively, "Either one's fine."She just laughed and pushed the menu back to me."Tonight's about celebrating your promotion."So, we're getting what you want

After the engagement was called off, Tyrus posted a statement in the mutual friends' group chat.He admitted the proxy girlfriend arrangement was never a game I had agreed to.The anniversary dinner, the hotel, and the wedding speech, he admitted, had all been prepared by me in advance. He had handed those things to Claire without my permission. At the end, he wrote, [Layla never came between me and Claire.][I was the one who went public with another woman and proposed to her without ever formally ending a five-year relationship.][It's entirely my fault.]The friends who had once egged him on at the wedding began apologizing to me.Some said, [We thought you two were just playing around.]Another explained, [Tyrus kept saying you'd definitely come back, so we didn't take it seriously.]Willow also sent me that speech draft again.[I'm sorry. Those memories were ours, but I let Claire deliver the speech in your place.]I did not rejoin that group.I only asked Tyrus to re

On the third day, Claire came to see me personally. She placed the anniversary necklace on the table. The pendant had been polished very thin. The name that had once belonged to me was completely gone. All that remained was this.[Tyrus & Claire, Day One]Claire stared at the necklace for a long time before letting go."Tyrus told me to give it back. He said it's yours."I put the necklace into a box.I did not thank her.Taking back what was mine did not require a thank-you in the first place.Claire sat across from me and did not leave for a long time."Lay-lay, if you just tell Tyrus you're never coming back, he'll go through with our engagement."He won't set a date right now."And he won't let me move in."I found it absurd."I already gave you the permanent girlfriend spot a month ago."If Tyrus won't go through with it, that's between the two of you."Tears welled up in her eyes. "But you're still the one he loves."I shook my head."What he loves is me get

After moving into my new place, I changed all my account passwords, canceled the shared memberships I had with Tyrus, and closed out our shared accounts.I even revoked access to our shared photo album from the past five years. The system prompted me, [Are you sure you want to leave this shared space?][If you leave, all data uploaded over the past five years will be permanently deleted. It ended the moment Tyrus started making Claire his proxy girlfriend, over and over again. The next day after work, Tyrus was waiting outside my office building. He had not slept all night. In his hand was the house key I had left behind."Why didn't you tell me your new address?"I walked around him.He stepped in front of me again."I already sent Claire home."She's not staying in our place."I looked at him and said, "That

Tyrus stood in the empty living room, calling my name multiple times. No one answered. He rushed into the bedroom. My half of the closet was completely empty. My documents, skincare products, and everyday medicine on the nightstand were all gone, too.Even the potted plant I had kept on the balcony for five years was missing. The only things left were the gifts he had given me: the matching watches, the anniversary decorations, and the fridge magnets from our trips together.I left behind everything that proved we had spent five years together.Tyrus picked up the booking confirmation from the moving company. The date on it was from twenty days ago.In other words, I had already started planning my exit before he even announced Claire was taking over.He assumed I had gone quiet because I was sulking, waiting for him to cave first. But I had not been waiting. I had been apartment hunting, sorting through my things, and quietly exiting his life bit by bit.Tyrus kept call
