Date = 7 April (about 3 in the morning)

The eventful night just got a whole lot more frenetic.

Place = San Francisco (24-hour convenience store)

In a parking lot of all places.

POV - Aria

Just go.

That’s what he said when I asked if I could leave with Mel. No hesitation, no follow-up, no kiss on the cheek. Just go.

Bloody baboon is one of his moods again. Which means, in Enrique-speak — ‘I’m annoyed, but I’ll stew in it alone because feelings are stupid and so is explaining them’.

Fine by me. I’m going.

The private parking area hums with low luxury — polished floors gleaming under warm overhead lights, exhaust fumes laced with the scent of expensive cologne. Valets in immaculate uniforms stand at attention like they’re auditioning for Buckingham Palace, each ready to park your Bentley, fetch your Bugatti, call your Uber, or whisk you home in a chauffeured Maybach.

Whatever your heart desires, Inferno delivers — wrapped in a gold bow, preferably with champagne on the side.

That’s why

Date = 1 JulyPlace = San Francisco (Damion’s house)POV - EnriqueThe house is silent. As if holding its breath against the storm.I know silence. I know it in dark rooms with mossy walls. I know it in Jackson’s voice when he is holding back. And I know it in this absence.River is not in her bed.“River?” I call, already halfway down the hallway. “Hey, where are you?”Nothing. Her hoodie is gone from the hook. So are her dunk-highs — the scuffed ones with the neon skulls on the side.“Damn it,” I mutter. Knowing. But I still check the back porch. The kitchen. Even the laundry room. Still nothing.“Aria!” I call, heading to the front of the house. She appears from the room, one of Mel’s button-up nighties on, with sexed up curls. “What?”“River’s gone.”Her face shifts instantly — first surprise, then annoyance, and finally a dawning edge of panic. “What do you mean gone?”“I mean gone gone.” I rush to grab my phone from the kitchen counter. “Shoes gone. Hoodie gone. Ghosted.”“Oh my

  • The Actor's Contract   70 Emotional abuse

Date = 1 JulyPlace = San Francisco (Damion’s house)POV - Aria“I need you naked,” Enrique says, so straightforwardly it feels like an order and a confession in one breath. We stumble into the bedroom, half out of breath, my shirt on the floor, before the lightning cracks again. Thunder rolls in after, deep and hungry. It feels like slipping into another dimension — one where breath and skin and longing blur into something weightless. The air smells like rain and electricity, like something about to break. The storm outside is a distant hum, barely audible under the pulse of moans and gasps that fills the room like static.Time doesn’t stop, but it bends. Warps. It stretches thin until it feels like we’re floating somewhere between lightning strikes, caught in the space before the next crash.Until the moment shatters, soft and final, and the world slowly returns to normal — the sting of air on sweat-damp skin, the thrum of blood in my ears, the ache of wanting something he still can

Date = 1 JulyPlace = San Francisco (Damion’s house)POV - AriaWARNING – Sex scene!!!The dishes clink in the sink, hot water steaming over my hands, thunder grumbling outside like an old demon with a toothache.I scrub harder than necessary, suds splashing up my arms, because it is better than thinking. The back door slammed shut twenty minutes ago. Jackson and Axel — ghosts in the rain. Out into the storm and into whatever dangerous plan Jackson refused to explain in full sentences.River is dozing, tucked under blankets and breathing slowly, but not nearly asleep enough to make me relax.Still, the house is quiet now. Just the storm. The water. The buzz of worry deep under my ribs. Leaving me alone with another problem. One, I’m not sure I want to face right now … or ever. One, I don’t hear sneaking up.He is always quieter than I expect a big man like him to be — all those sharp cargoes and louder-than-life grins don’t line up with the way he moves like a shadow. He appears behin

  • The Actor's Contract   68 Showers and secrets

Date = 1 JulyIn just a day, the little hooligan changed my view of life.Place = San Francisco (Damion’s house)The only place I could think of going.POV - EnriqueSteam billows out of the shower like smoke from a fire, curling around my feet as I sit on the bed, arms crossed, jaw tight. The walls of the house groan under the wind outside, but it was nothing compared to the storm I feel building inside me.My stupid, crazy twin is back. Finally. Filthy, hollow-eyed, a ghost in tattered denim and dried blood. He hasn’t spoken much — just grunted something about a hot shower before disappearing into the bathroom like a man walking into war. Again.I let him.For now.I know, from years of experience living under the same roof, not to poke. Poking almost always leads to a fight. And getting into a one-on-one with my brother when he’s like this is definitely not on my to-do list for the day. No, I have more elaborate plans scheduled, plans that involve Aria, me, no clothes, and a box of

  • The Actor's Contract   67 A grinch

Date = 1 JulyPlace = San Francisco (Damion’s house)POV - AriaThe sky is turning the color of old iron, thick with layered grays that bled into one another, slow and heavy, darkening the sky to an unnatural charcoal. A low groan of distant thunder rumbles — not loud, but long — like something ancient waking up.The wind shifts, sharp and metallic, and the gulls have vanished. On the horizon, where sea meets sky, the black clouds curl inward like fists. Something is coming. Not rain. Something worse. We watch them drive away. Charlotte waves her little arm off through the back window of the truck. Leyla is gonna miss having her around.I look down at the new tiny girl holding my hand. She’s even smaller than my sister. Thin, but strong — in cargo shorts and an oversized skate hoodie that says ‘Eat My Dust’ in neon colors.“Eh, so River, I hear you’re looking for your brother?” I ask while we walk back inside.“No, he’s fine, I’m looking —” she answers quickly, stops just as quickly m

  • The Actor's Contract   66 Still gone

Date = 1 JulyPlace = San Francisco (Damion’s house)POV - AriaAs my tongue eventually detaches from the back of my mouth, I manage to ask in an unsteady voice, “Eh … so … where’s the little angel?”I need something to distract my focus from the manly specimen now standing next to me. Inches away. While pretending his look of intense longing directed at my mouth doesn’t affect me one bit. Bloody hell, he makes things hard. And speaking of hard things … my eyes dart to his swollen crotch. At least he’s also feeling the heat in some way.“Angel?” he snorts out a chuckle. “I’m not sure that word suits our little runaway. She definitely shares Lee’s DNA. For a moment, I even assumed she could very well be my twin’s offspring.”Just the thought of Jackson reproducing pin-wheels my brain, and I lose my chain of thought. I look at Charlotte to help a girl out, but she just lifts her shoulders and pouts.“That’s stupid,” she tweets, “To have a baby, you need love, marriage, respect, and cons
