Chapter 1: The Weight She Carries

It was starting to get dark as I reached the doorstep of the house, right in front of it lay piles of envelopes. I knew what they were without picking it up at first, my chest started beating like it was shot with an arrow. I picked them up, entered the house and went straight into my room. I knew mom would be asleep because she's always asleep by this time so I didn't bother opening her room so as to not disturb her.

I just got back from yet another failed job hunt, every time it's either they are not looking for new staff or my qualifications don't meet the requirements. What have I done to deserve this from the universe, is this how my life is meant to be. My thoughts were spiralling, I guess that's what I get for being an overthinker.

I picked up one of the papers that was sitting on my bed and stared at the big red letters stamped across it. Final Notice. My chest felt heavy. If I didn’t pay soon, they would cut us off. No light, no water, and worse, no way to keep mum's medicine cold in the fridge.

I pushed the bills aside and buried my face in my hands. My eyes stung so bad, but I refuse to cry, I had promised myself that I wouldn’t cry anymore from the first day I realized mum had cancer. Crying didn’t fix anything, it didn’t buy the medicine, it didn’t stop cancer from spreading in mum's body and it definitely didn't provide the money I need.

My stomach growled for the millionth time like always, reminding me I had not eaten since morning. I ignored it, I've gotten used to it by now trying to save every money for mum's food and drugs.

“Aliana,” my mum's weak voice called from the other room.

I quickly wiped my eyes and stood. “I’m coming, Mama.”

I entered the small room where she lay in bed, she looked so pale, if this was a movie she would have fit the role of a vampire, her skin almost see through, her hair thinner than it used to be. But when she saw me , she smiled softly, always trying to put on a bold font.

“You should sleep,” mum whispered. “It’s late.”

“I will, Mama. I just wanted to check on you first.” I forced a smile, pulling the blanket higher over her chest.

Mum's hand reached out, trembling, and touched my cheek. “You’re carrying too much, my love. I can see it in your eyes.”

“I’m fine,” I lied, holding her hand tightly. “I’ll find a way. Don’t worry about me.”

She gave a faint laugh, one that turned into a cough. “You’re too young to carry the world.”

I stayed there until her breathing softened and sleep pulled her under again. Only then did I return to my room, where the bills still waited like monsters I couldn’t fight or destroy.

I sat on the floor, hugging my knees. The silence pressed down on me, picking at my skin. I thought about all the jobs I applied for, shops, cafes, cleaning work, but nothing had worked out. They all wanted experience I didn’t have or hours I couldn’t handle while caring for mum

My phone buzzed on the mattress. A message, I picked it up and saw my best friend’s name Lyra.

“Still awake?”

I typed back quickly. “ Yeah.”

A moment later, another message popped up. Come see me tomorrow. I might have something that can help.

I frowned. What could she possibly mean? Lyra worked in the city, and every time I asked about it, she only gave vague answers. But if there was even a chance it could help her mother, she has to go.

I set the phone down and leaned back against the wall, closed her eyes, but sleep didn’t come easily. My thoughts continued to chase me in circles.

What if mum’s time was running out? What if tomorrow was too late? What if I failed again?

By the time morning light crept through the curtains, I hadn’t slept at all, my eyes swollen with eye bags, I dressed quickly, tying my long hair into a messy bun. My reflection in the mirror showed tired eyes and pale skin, but I didn’t care at the moment. I have more important things to worry about. Mum was still sleeping when I slipped out. The walk to the bus stop was long, my shoes worn thin, but I didn’t care. I only thought about Lyra’s message.

When I finally reached the small cafe , where they always met, Lyra was already there, sipping coffee with her usual bright smile. Lyra always looked perfect, hair neat, clothes stylish, nails done. She was the opposite of me, who could barely afford soap sometimes.

“Ali!” Lyra waved, standing to hug her. “You look like you didn’t sleep.”

I gave a small shrug. “I couldn’t. Things are… bad.”

“They’ll get better,” Lyra said quickly, squeezing her hand. “And maybe I can help.”

I looked at her with tired eyes. “How?”

Lyra leaned closer, lowering her voice like she was sharing a secret. “My workplace is hiring. The pay is good, better than any shop or cafe. You’d make enough for your mom’s treatment.”

I blinked. “Your workplace? But you never told me what you do.”

Lyra smiled, a little guilty but still playful. “I work at a club. A strip club.”

My stomach dropped so fast, I almost laughed, thinking it was a joke. But Lyra’s face stayed serious.

“You want me to dance, are you crazy?” I asked, half shocked, half offended.

“No, no!” Lyra shook her head quickly. “Not dance. Just waitressing, carrying drinks, cleaning tables, that kind of thing. It’s not glamorous, but the tips are crazy. You’d earn in one night what you’d earn in a week at any cafe”

I stared at her, unsure what to say. The idea of walking into such a place made my chest tighten. But then I thought of my mum, pale and coughing in bed, I thought of the bills stacked on the floor, I thought of the doctor’s voice saying she needs treatment.

Lyra touched her hand again. “Ali, I wouldn’t tell you this if I didn’t think it could help. Just try. One night. If you hate it, you can leave.”

I sat there, my throat dry , staring into space, my heart said no, but my mind whispered yes. I had no other options left.

I finally looked at Lyra and nodded, though it felt like signing a deal with something dark. “Okay,” I whispered. “One night.”

Lyra’s smile widened but I was staring at my hands, wondering if I had just taken the first step into something I couldn’t escape.

"What type of abuse Theresa" I felt genuinely sorry for Ares mother.Theresa sighed before continuing "Physically, mentally and emotionally. The next morning after the incident Clarissa tried calling her father to tell him about what happened but then Marcello came in and caught her to which he then collected the phone and reassured her father that nothing was wrong, saying she just missed home. He was so convincing that her father believed and cut the call, that night her screams filled the mansion, it was so terrifying that I couldn’t sleep. The next morning he called me and told me to attend to her but upon entering the room nothing prepared me for the sight before me. She was clutching the sheets to her body, marks adorned her arm, her neck, left cheek and her eyes looked haunted. I dropped the glass of water and food in my hand, it made a cluttering noise and she flinched looking up just realizing that I was there, I rushed to her and embraced her. It was like my embrace tr

I sat down slowly across from him, trying not to scare him. “Would you like to watch TV” I said softly. He nodded his head meekly and pointed to his superman figure trying to tell me he wanted to watch it. I picked up the remote and turned on the Superman cartoon. ‘’Let me quickly get us some fruit juice to drink, would you like that Cole?’’ He nodded his head once again, Theresa smiled and went towards the kitchen humming a tune as she walked. The sound of the cartoon filled the room, for some minutes we just sat there him watching Superman, me pretending to watch too. Every now and then, he’d glance at me, and when I smiled, he’d quickly turn back to the screen, cheeks a little red. It was small, but it was progress and for the first time since I entered this mansion, I felt something warm like maybe, just maybe, Cole and I could become friends. ‘’Here I come’’ Theresa walked in holding a tray of three glass cups filled with an orange liquid which I assume is orange juice.

Once Ares left the room, the air instantly felt lighter, “finally he's gone”. I quickly put my hand over my mouth, I did not just say that out loud.Teresa chuckled. “No need to be afraid dear, with time you will understand him better and the tension won't be as thick” Nope I think I'm very much okay not understanding him, I only came here for one thing and that's to be Cole's caretaker and nothing else. Sure keep telling yourself that, we both know how hard your pussy clenches when he's around you. What the hell, it feels like I'm having an internal battle with my consciousness, girll we need to get on track no more pussy talk, we are here for Cole. But I couldn't help but just wonder about how my pussy would clench around his cock, fuck I'm already getting wet. I think I'm going to have to play with my vibrator soon to get the edge off.I could hear Theresa talking but I wasn't paying attention.“Sorry Theresa can you come again”“I said he wasn't always like this” she spoke somb

  • The Alliance That Turned Her World    Chapter 13: Meeting Cole

Ares pulled out his phone from his suit pocket, “Theresa good morning, is Cole awake now?” he waited till she replied on the other end. “Okay good, bring him over to the dining room” he continued, his voice calm but firm. I just stood there holding the small file he gave me. My heart was beating so fast. I wasn’t sure if it was because of him or because I was about to meet Cole for the first time, maybe both. Well let's not count me watching the interaction last night and the sneak peek this morning. “Follow me,” Ares said and walked out of his office without even checking if I was behind him. His long steps made me almost run to keep up. The hallway looked beautiful and quiet, I didn't notice it before due to my elevator incident and me being late. Everything in this mansion looked rich, shiny, and far from the life I was used to. We got to the elevator and my chest started beating “It will be fine, nothing is going to happen to you, just get in” I looked up at him, trusting

“Why are you late Miss Hales?” Ares continued. “Why do you have so many buttons in your elevator in the first place, I almost died there” I mumbled quietly “What did you just say” he raised an eyebrow at me “I didn't say anything” “I don't like repeating myself Miss Hales” he stood up from his desk and stalked towards me. “It's really nothing” I looked anywhere other than at him. “Then why are you breathing hard and looking flustered?” He grabbed my chin and turned my face towards him, pressing me against the door. “When I'm talking you look at me” he continued. I gulped, he's so close to me that I could feel him breathing and he was doing something to my insides, why is he making me feel like this. I need to get as far away from him, I tried removing his hands from me and tried to move away but his grip on me was strong. “Ughhh I said why do you have so many buttons in your elevator, why do you even have an elevator, what happened to stairs, it's just three floors” I glare

  • The Alliance That Turned Her World    Chapter 11: Seven minutes late

Beep, Beep, Beep Beep, Beep, Beep I groaned and turned to put off my alarm, I continued dreaming about Ares placing kisses on my neck down to my collarbone… wait a minute, Ohh shit ARES! I jolted awake in realization like I had just been struck with lightning. I scrambled for my phone on my bed and checked the time “fuck it's 8:30am”, my alarm was ringing since 8am and I kept on putting it off, now I only have thirty minutes to have my bath, dress up and go to his office. I still don't know his office, I have to ask Theresa first. I bolted from my bed and ran to the bathroom, there is no time for me to fully enjoy the bathtub so I quickly had my bath, luckily for me my towel was inside the bathroom after using it last night and I don't have to go into the room naked. Normally I would have no problem with that because I usually just come out of the bathroom naked and dress in my room but now I'm in this mansion and can't have anyone walking into the room like that. I went towards my
