The chamber seemed to hold its breath.

Torin struck his staff once more. “This council agrees to hunt the beast as a unified coalition. The DarkBreeds will be watched, not attacked, until proof is undeniable.”

Some nodded. Others frowned. But no one openly objected.

Clay sat slowly, his expression controlled, but I could feel the tension thrumming through the bond. He was not finished with this. Not even close.

As the meeting moved on, strategies discussed and borders mapped, my thoughts remained fixed on one thing.

If Clay were wrong, war would consume us.

And if he was right, then the

  • The Alpha Betrayed Mate   CHAPTER 30: NOT MY FAULT

The chamber was warm, lit low by firelight that softened the stone walls and hid the fractures in them, just as I hoped it would hide the fractures in us. Clay stood near the table, loosening the leather straps of his armour, his movements distracted, mechanical. He had not looked at me properly since we left the council chamber.I watched him for a moment before I moved.I crossed the room slowly, deliberately, letting the silence stretch until it pressed against his senses. When I reached him, I placed my hands on his chest, feeling the familiar strength beneath his tunic. Once, that solidity had been my anchor.“Stay,” I said quietly. He stilled, his breath hitching for just a second. “I am here.”“No,” I replied. “You’re not.”His eyes lifted to mine then, dark and unreadable. “Zanny, today was—”“I don’t want to talk about today,” I interrupted gently. I stepped closer, lowering my voice. “I want us to remember who we are to each other.”I leaned in, brushing my lips against his

  • The Alpha Betrayed Mate   CHAPTER 29: FORMIDABLE

I should have felt shaken after everything that happened in the council chamber. Any sane woman would have been. Lies laid bare. A former friend was dragged away in chains. Power shifting in real time, scraping skin and bone as it moved.Instead, as the doors closed behind Selene and the noise settled into a low, uneasy murmur, I felt something unexpected settle inside me. It was relief. Not joy or triumph in the childish sense but the deep, bone-level relief of someone who had carried a secret alone for too long and finally set it down in the open. The council had not adjourned properly. There had been no closing rites, no formal blessing from the elders. Everything about the meeting felt fractured, unfinished. Conversations broke out in tense clusters, Alphas whispering to one another, reassessing alliances, remeasuring one another’s strength.Clay stood up abruptly.“We will reconvene,” he said, his voice sharper than it needed to be. “This meeting has been… interrupted.”Interrupt

  • The Alpha Betrayed Mate   CHAPTER 28: THE VERDICT

As I stood there, alone at the centre of power and scrutiny, one truth settled deep in my bones. No matter what verdict came next, nothing would ever be the same again.I did not plan to say it.The words were not rehearsed, not shaped gently for a council that preferred lies wrapped in ceremony. They tore their way out of me, raw and burning, because silence had become heavier than truth. The chamber was already tense from everything I had said before. My admission of meeting the DarkBreeds still hung in the air, sharp as smoke after fire. I could feel eyes on me from every direction, some furious, some curious, some calculating how best to use my downfall if it came.

  • The Alpha Betrayed Mate   CHAPTER 27: A VOICE OF REASON

Alpha Rydan’s question did not come as a surprise.I had been waiting for it, sitting beneath the weight of the council’s stares, my spine straight, my hands folded loosely in my lap as if my heart was not pounding hard enough to bruise my ribs from the inside. The murmurs that followed Selene’s accusation still rippled through the chamber like disturbed water. Taboo. Traitor. Witch. I heard the words even when they were not spoken.Alpha Rydan rose slowly from his seat, tall and broad-shouldered, his presence commanding silence without effort.“Luna Zanny,” he said, his voice calm but sharp with authority, “you have heard what Selene has accused you of. Before this council decides how to proceed, tell us what you have to say.”For a heartbeat, the world narrowed to the sound of my own breathing. Then I laughed. It was not soft. It was not polite. It rang out across the chamber, sharp and sudden, bouncing off stone pillars and carved ceilings that had witnessed centuries of bloodshed

  • The Alpha Betrayed Mate   CHAPTER 26: BOTCHED PLAN

The hall settled slowly after the wine break, like a wounded animal deciding whether to bare its teeth again or lie still. Chairs scraped stone. The murmurs did not stop; they only lowered, thick with suspicion and unfinished thoughts.I returned to my seat beside Clay, my face composed, my heart anything but. I could feel the weight of the room pressing against my skin. Every Alpha, every Elder, every warrior present sensed that the meeting had shifted. What had been a strategy meeting had turned into a personal ego and power struggle. That made the atmosphere a dangerous one.Elder Torin raised his staff once. The sound echoed, sharp and final.“The council reconvenes.”Silence followed. Not peace, but I would rather say an expectation. I knew we had to move from the power tussle to solving our common issues. I kept my gaze forward, though I could feel Selene somewhere around the corner of the entrance and wondered why she was still allowed to stand and watch after everything. Cl

  • The Alpha Betrayed Mate   CHAPTER 25:  EGO IS NOT BLIND

Elder Torin’s voice cut through the council chamber like a blade striking stone.“She is not to be trusted.”I felt every gaze shift. Some turned toward Selene. Others toward me. A few toward Clay.My spine stiffened. My hands, folded in my lap, clenched so tightly my nails bit into my skin. I had expected many things this day, but not this. Not Torin choosing this moment. Not this battlefield.Clay rose, so suddenly his chair scraped loudly against the stone floor.“And when,” he said sharply, his voice echoing across the chamber, “did she become the trusted one in your bed, Elder. When your bed and desire needed to be satisfied?”The world seemed to tilt. For a heartbeat, I could not breathe.I turned slowly toward him, disbelief flooding me so fast it burned. My husband. My Alpha. Standing before the council of all packs, accusing an Elder of exactly what I had once caught him doing with Selene. The irony was cruel. The hypocrisy was unbearable. My ears rang. I was dimly aware of g
