Chapter 2

مؤلف: Ophelia
Alexander left the check of thirty thousand and walked out without looking back.

Watching him leave, I suddenly realized that the man who used to talk about justice at every turn, who'd once stood up to the Elders over a single ordinary wolf's rights, was long gone.

And this engagement had no reason to continue.

The next day, I went straight to the Pack Affairs Office and filed to cancel the bonding ceremony with Alexander.

The moment I walked into Alexander's office, I saw something absurd.

Alexander, the man with severe germophobia, was kneeling on one knee, cradling Claire's ankle, carefully massaging her foot.

The way he looked at her held a tenderness I had never once seen directed at me.

The second Claire spotted me, she pulled her foot back and put on a flustered act.

"Selena, please don't get the wrong idea. I just twisted my ankle. Alexander was kind enough to check on it."

Then she tugged at Alexander's sleeve, eyes red.

"Alexander, you have to explain. I really don't want to lose my trainee healer position because of this..."

Alexander patted her shoulder gently.

"Don't worry. She's here to apologize to you."

He looked up at me, voice turning cold on contact.

"Didn't I tell you to bring something to the Healing Temple? Why did you show up empty-handed?"

"Do I have to teach you how to apologize?"

I didn't waste words. I put the bond dissolution contract on the desk in front of him.

"Sign it."

"This engagement is over."

Alexander blinked. Then frowned.

"What are you pulling now?"

"You know my mother has always approved of you as her daughter-in-law. She'd never agree to us dissolving cancel the bonding ceremony"

"You're doing this just so my mom comes back and scolds me, right?"

Hearing that, I almost laughed.

So he still remembered he had a mother.

Too bad he'd never see her come back to yell at him again.

I looked at him. Voice soft.

"Your mom is never going to yell at you again."

Alexander's expression shifted. "What do you mean?"

"Go home and see for yourself."

He waved me off, annoyed. "Stop being cryptic."

"So your mom died. How long are you going to keep making a scene about it?"

"Get out. I'm not dissolving the bond."

Claire's eyes went red right on cue.

"Selena, I'm so sorry..."

"I really didn't know your mother was allergic to moonfern. If I'd known, how could I have used that compound on her?"

Her shoulders trembled. Every word dripped with hurt.

"When she came in that day, I asked if there was anything I should be aware of. She didn't tell me a thing."

"I just followed standard treatment protocol. How was I supposed to know she'd have a reaction that severe?"

"I never meant to kill her."

She sounded so sincere. Like she was the real victim.

I looked at her. Inside, I was ice.

The person she was talking about was my birth mother, Margaret.

At least, that's what she believed.

She had no idea that the person who actually died at her hands was Alexander's mother, Isabella.

And the most absurd part was that Alexander didn't know either.

He thought Claire had killed my mother. That's why he was covering for her so desperately.

When he saw Claire crying harder, Alexander immediately pulled her into his arms.

"Don't cry. This wasn't your fault."

Then he turned his cold eyes on me.

"Selena, she's already explained everything. What more do you want?"

"She had no way of knowing your mother was allergic to moonfern. How could it be deliberate?"

"The woman's dead. How long are you going to hold on to this?"

I looked at him, and suddenly the whole thing felt laughable.

Every single time Isabella went for treatment, she told the healer about her moonfern allergy.

Even if she'd forgotten once, the temple's medical records would have it on file.

So Claire knew. And she added moonfern to the compound anyway.

And Alexander, not only was he making excuses for her, he'd taken Isabella's body, believing it was Margaret's, and handed it to Claire as a research specimen.

"Dead people can't feel anything."

"Letting Claire study her is the last value she has."

He'd said it like it was nothing.

I couldn't bring myself to imagine what would happen the day he found out that the body he'd surrendered, the one Claire had been dissecting, was his own mother.

When I didn't respond, Alexander spoke again, voice hard.

"I'm telling you, this thing with your mother ends here."

"Stop going after Claire. And don't think you'll squeeze another cent of compensation out of me."

I was quiet for a moment. Then I slid the dissolution contract across the desk again.

"Alexander, the bonding ceremony. I've already filed to cancel it."

The more they'd respected Alexander before, the more complicated their expressions were now. Some were shocked. Some disgusted. And some, remembering how they'd joined him in cursing Isabella, couldn't hide their shame.Claire, surrounded by enforcers, looked like she'd suddenly grabbed hold of one last lifeline. She looked at Alexander, already on his knees, and a spark of desperate hope flashed in her eyes. Ignoring the enforcers' blockade, she rushed toward him."Alexander..."Her voice was still soft. Still carrying the coy sweetness she'd always used."Didn't you promise that no matter what happened, you'd protect me?""Everyone's turning against me now. Please, help me. Please?"She reached out, trying to grab his sleeve."If you just tell the Elder Council it wasn't on purpose, they'll believe you.""You said you wouldn't let me lose my healer's license. You said you'd never let anything happen to me..."Looking at the face that had made him cave so many times before, Alexander

The color drained from Alexander's face, degree by degree.Just moments ago, he'd stood before the crowd, defending Claire with absolute conviction, condemning Selena without a shred of doubt. Now he looked like someone who'd had every last ounce of strength pulled out of him.He staggered forward, nearly pressing his face against the screen. It wasn't until the footage showed Isabella's face again, sharp and unmistakable, that his entire body convulsed."Mom..."The word came out barely above a whisper, but it was thick with a terror and disbelief too dense to untangle."How... how can it be my mom?"He shook his head violently, as if denial alone could turn everything in front of him back into a nightmare. But the truth doesn't change just because someone refuses to see it.The person on that screen, the one who'd stopped breathing, was Isabella.Alexander spun around and stared at me, his eyes wild."Selena... tell me this isn't real. Please.""That's not my mother in there!""She c

The moment he saw me standing in the crowd, Alexander's eyes went red.He shot to his feet and pointed at me, the rage he'd been holding back finally exploding."Selena, I was just about to come find you!""You actually have the nerve to show up here and slander me and Claire in front of all these people?"His eyes bored into me. "Where is my mother?"Claire put on a bewildered expression."Alexander, what's going on?""Mrs. Isabella... is missing?"Alexander's face darkened with grief. He nodded heavily."Ever since Selena left my territory, I haven't been able to reach my mother.""Her room is empty. The attendants have no idea where she went.""I've been trying to contact her through the Mind-link every day, but there's never a response."By this point, his eyes were rimmed with red."My mother raised me on her own. The bond between us runs deep. She would never disappear like this without a word. She'd never leave without telling me something."Then, he suddenly thrust his hand tow

I pulled the brim of my cap lower and sat quietly at the edge of the square, watching Alexander on stage, burning with righteous fury. The more passionately he spoke, the more absurd it all became. How could the victim's family not have shown up?Her only son was standing right there.Except right now, he was pouring every ounce of his energy into clearing the name of the woman who'd actually killed her, and personally shoving his own mother onto the pyre of the pack's contempt. The crowd below had clearly been whipped into a frenzy."Alexander is absolutely right!""That kind of person makes a mistake and then forces the whole pack to deal with the fallout. Disgusting!""With family like that, no wonder nobody spoke up for the dead woman!""Someone who twists the truth like that should have her name remembered by every wolf in the pack!"Alexander was pleased with the effect."But what's done is done.""The fact that Claire has held on this long is remarkable in itself.""She didn't l

On one hand, Alexander was hurling threats at me. On the other, with Claire's guidance, he kept piling layer after layer of so-called "evidence" onto the treatment incident. He even had someone pull the surveillance footage from the Healing Sanctuary that day.But by the time that footage reached his hands, it had been cut beyond recognition. The part where Isabella, wearing a mask, had personally told Claire about her moonfern allergy before entering the Sanctuary was completely deleted. The footage of Claire adding moonfern into the medication during preparation was also removed. All that remained was the masked Isabella lying on the treatment table receiving the medication, followed by the sudden onset of a severe reaction. Then, misleading narration was deliberately overlaid onto the footage."Please note, the patient did not inform the apprentice healer of any special contraindications after entering the Healing Sanctuary.""The healer followed standard treatment protocol, yet the

"They were obviously in on it together!""I bet she's afraid the victim's family will come after her, so she's going after Claire as a smokescreen!""Find the old she-wolf's clan. Make them face the consequences alongside Selena!""Exactly! People who exploit the pack's goodwill to hurt others should have their names known by every wolf. Let's see who dares pull something like this again!"The voices around us grew louder and more vicious.More and more pack members joined in. Some shouted about tracking down the "victim's" clan. Some were already organizing groups to go to the dead woman's territory to protest, to throw filth at her door.Watching all of this, Alexander not only didn't stop it but actually nodded with approval."The fact that everyone is willing to stand up shows our pack still knows right from wrong."He even validated the increasingly extreme voices right there in front of everyone."Since they did wrong, they should face the consequences. A family that doesn't even
