Chapter 3

مؤلف: Ophelia
Alexander ripped the contract to pieces on the spot.

Shreds of paper drifted from his fingers. He stared at me with a look cold enough to kill.

"You want out that badly?"

"Fine. I'll give you what you want."

"But the dissolution terms will be rewritten by me. I'll make sure you leave with nothing. You'll be the laughingstock of the entire pack."

His jaw was clenched, every word laced with fury.

"And I'm going to make sure my mother sees exactly what kind of person her precious daughter-in-law really is."

"A vile woman who used her own mother's death to extort money. Who harassed the Elder Council. Who persecuted an innocent healer just to line her own pockets."

Through the storm of paper scraps, I saw the viciousness in his eyes. And I saw Claire, head bowed, with a flash of triumph she didn't quite hide.

I said nothing.

I turned and walked out of the pack affairs hall.

Back at the house, I packed my things in silence.

The engagement was dead. There was no reason to stay.

But the moment I stepped outside with my bags, a crowd of pack members came pouring in from every direction.

Phones out. Cameras pointed at me.

"That's her!"

"The woman who coached her own mother into faking a treatment accident, then got her killed in the process!"

"After her mom died, she still wouldn't quit. Used her status as the Alpha's fiancée to pressure the Elder Council for compensation three separate times!"

"Claire just became a trainee healer and this woman nearly drove her to a breakdown. She's been having panic attacks for weeks!"

"Thank God Alexander is a principled Alpha. Even though it's his own fiancée causing trouble, he refused to cover for her!"

"Now she can't get Alexander to back her up, so she's threatening him with a bond dissolution. Trying to run!"

The accusations hit me from every angle.

I looked up. Through the crush of bodies, I saw Alexander and Claire standing in the back.

Both of them watching with detached, satisfied eyes.

I finally understood.

This was Alexander's retaliation.

He wanted to destroy my reputation. Make every wolf in the pack believe I was a monster who'd exploit her own mother's death for money.

The footage spread across every pack channel within minutes.

Strangers started piling on.

"Using her own mother's death for cash? This woman is pure evil."

"Her mother must've been cursed by the Moon Goddess to end up with a daughter like this."

"With a daughter this rotten, maybe the mother dying was divine punishment!"

"Exactly. If the mother wasn't trying to scam compensation, why didn't she tell the healer about her allergy?"

More and more pack members gathered.

Someone picked up dirt and rotten fruit from the ground and hurled it at me.

I walked through the filth, step by step, until I was standing in front of Alexander.

"Alexander, do you really have to take it this far?"

Before he could answer, Claire stepped out, eyes brimming.

"Selena, I'm begging you, please let me go."

"Your mother's gone, and I've been living with the guilt every single day. I really didn't mean to kill her."

"Why won't you stop coming after me?"

She cried so beautifully. Like she was the one being cornered.

Pity flickered in Alexander's eyes.

The next second, he pulled Claire behind him and looked at me, cold as stone.

"Selena, you brought this on yourself."

"Your mother died because she hid her own allergy. Claire had nothing to do with it."

"You refused to accept the ruling. You appealed to the Elder Council over and over, and now the whole pack is turning on Claire because of you."

"And then you tried to use the bond dissolution to blackmail me into dropping her?"

His voice got colder with every word.

"Your mother's death was meaningless. She did it to herself."

"Don't expect another cent from me. And don't even think about touching Claire."

I looked at this man. The man who was protecting, with everything he had, the woman who killed his own mother.

I let out a cold laugh, done saving his face.

I was about to open my mouth right then and there and expose the truth in front of everyone.

But just then, a voice no one expected came from the back of the crowd.

"Who did you say is dead?"

Every head turned at once.

My mother, Margaret, pushed through the crowd and stepped into the open.

The more they'd respected Alexander before, the more complicated their expressions were now. Some were shocked. Some disgusted. And some, remembering how they'd joined him in cursing Isabella, couldn't hide their shame.Claire, surrounded by enforcers, looked like she'd suddenly grabbed hold of one last lifeline. She looked at Alexander, already on his knees, and a spark of desperate hope flashed in her eyes. Ignoring the enforcers' blockade, she rushed toward him."Alexander..."Her voice was still soft. Still carrying the coy sweetness she'd always used."Didn't you promise that no matter what happened, you'd protect me?""Everyone's turning against me now. Please, help me. Please?"She reached out, trying to grab his sleeve."If you just tell the Elder Council it wasn't on purpose, they'll believe you.""You said you wouldn't let me lose my healer's license. You said you'd never let anything happen to me..."Looking at the face that had made him cave so many times before, Alexander

The color drained from Alexander's face, degree by degree.Just moments ago, he'd stood before the crowd, defending Claire with absolute conviction, condemning Selena without a shred of doubt. Now he looked like someone who'd had every last ounce of strength pulled out of him.He staggered forward, nearly pressing his face against the screen. It wasn't until the footage showed Isabella's face again, sharp and unmistakable, that his entire body convulsed."Mom..."The word came out barely above a whisper, but it was thick with a terror and disbelief too dense to untangle."How... how can it be my mom?"He shook his head violently, as if denial alone could turn everything in front of him back into a nightmare. But the truth doesn't change just because someone refuses to see it.The person on that screen, the one who'd stopped breathing, was Isabella.Alexander spun around and stared at me, his eyes wild."Selena... tell me this isn't real. Please.""That's not my mother in there!""She c

The moment he saw me standing in the crowd, Alexander's eyes went red.He shot to his feet and pointed at me, the rage he'd been holding back finally exploding."Selena, I was just about to come find you!""You actually have the nerve to show up here and slander me and Claire in front of all these people?"His eyes bored into me. "Where is my mother?"Claire put on a bewildered expression."Alexander, what's going on?""Mrs. Isabella... is missing?"Alexander's face darkened with grief. He nodded heavily."Ever since Selena left my territory, I haven't been able to reach my mother.""Her room is empty. The attendants have no idea where she went.""I've been trying to contact her through the Mind-link every day, but there's never a response."By this point, his eyes were rimmed with red."My mother raised me on her own. The bond between us runs deep. She would never disappear like this without a word. She'd never leave without telling me something."Then, he suddenly thrust his hand tow

I pulled the brim of my cap lower and sat quietly at the edge of the square, watching Alexander on stage, burning with righteous fury. The more passionately he spoke, the more absurd it all became. How could the victim's family not have shown up?Her only son was standing right there.Except right now, he was pouring every ounce of his energy into clearing the name of the woman who'd actually killed her, and personally shoving his own mother onto the pyre of the pack's contempt. The crowd below had clearly been whipped into a frenzy."Alexander is absolutely right!""That kind of person makes a mistake and then forces the whole pack to deal with the fallout. Disgusting!""With family like that, no wonder nobody spoke up for the dead woman!""Someone who twists the truth like that should have her name remembered by every wolf in the pack!"Alexander was pleased with the effect."But what's done is done.""The fact that Claire has held on this long is remarkable in itself.""She didn't l

On one hand, Alexander was hurling threats at me. On the other, with Claire's guidance, he kept piling layer after layer of so-called "evidence" onto the treatment incident. He even had someone pull the surveillance footage from the Healing Sanctuary that day.But by the time that footage reached his hands, it had been cut beyond recognition. The part where Isabella, wearing a mask, had personally told Claire about her moonfern allergy before entering the Sanctuary was completely deleted. The footage of Claire adding moonfern into the medication during preparation was also removed. All that remained was the masked Isabella lying on the treatment table receiving the medication, followed by the sudden onset of a severe reaction. Then, misleading narration was deliberately overlaid onto the footage."Please note, the patient did not inform the apprentice healer of any special contraindications after entering the Healing Sanctuary.""The healer followed standard treatment protocol, yet the

"They were obviously in on it together!""I bet she's afraid the victim's family will come after her, so she's going after Claire as a smokescreen!""Find the old she-wolf's clan. Make them face the consequences alongside Selena!""Exactly! People who exploit the pack's goodwill to hurt others should have their names known by every wolf. Let's see who dares pull something like this again!"The voices around us grew louder and more vicious.More and more pack members joined in. Some shouted about tracking down the "victim's" clan. Some were already organizing groups to go to the dead woman's territory to protest, to throw filth at her door.Watching all of this, Alexander not only didn't stop it but actually nodded with approval."The fact that everyone is willing to stand up shows our pack still knows right from wrong."He even validated the increasingly extreme voices right there in front of everyone."Since they did wrong, they should face the consequences. A family that doesn't even
