Damien's POV

The moment her hand had touched mine, something inside my chest had eased — not gone, never fully gone, but quieter, the way a scream finally allowed to drop into a whisper after hours of raw-throated agony. I hadn't known relief could feel that specific, that tied to one person's skin against mine.

I hadn't expected it to hit me the way it did. I'd braced myself for her anger, for coldness sharp enough to cut, for the very real possibility she'd take one look at me and walk straight back out that door without a single word spared for me. I hadn't braced myself for the way my whole body would recognize her touch like something coming up for air after too long underwater — instant, involuntary, entirely outside anything I could control or explain away.

"That reaction," Elder Mackenzie said, returning to my room once Dara had gone, studying the veins along my wrist with new and unmistakable intensity, "was stronger than I anticipated. Considerably stronger than the texts suggested it should be."

"Meaning what, exactly?" I pushed myself straighter against the headboard, ignoring the way the movement pulled hard at muscles gone stiff with pain, ignoring the fresh throb it sent lancing straight up through my ribs.

"Meaning the bond isn't merely wounded, Alpha. It's *responsive*. Actively, specifically responsive to her, in a way I haven't seen documented in this pack's records for generations." Mackenzie's brow furrowed deep, the exact expression she wore whenever some piece of a larger puzzle stubbornly refused to sit where logic insisted it should. She crossed to the small writing desk in the corner, retrieving a worn leather journal I recognized as one of the pack's oldest surviving texts, its spine cracked from decades of careful handling. "The Adeyemi bloodline has always carried old rumors alongside it. Guardian blood, some of the ancient records call it — blood tied directly to the original pact struck between the first wolves and the Moon Goddess herself, long before this pack, before any of our current bloodlines existed at all. I confess I dismissed it as superstition once. The kind of story elders tell to explain away coincidence and comfort themselves in the process."

"And now?" I pressed, though some quiet part of me already suspected the answer, already felt it settling cold and certain low in my gut.

"Now I am no longer certain it was ever superstition at all." She met my eyes directly, something careful and unsettled behind her own. "If the Adeyemi line truly descends from Guardian blood, it would explain a great deal, Alpha. It would explain why the bond between the two of you formed as strongly as it did, faster and deeper than most fated bonds I've personally witnessed in forty years of service to this pack. It would explain why her mere proximity eases the curse instead of simply masking its symptoms temporarily. And it would explain, rather uncomfortably for all of us, why your mother was so determined to see this particular match dissolved before it could ever fully take root and grow beyond her control."

A cold understanding moved through me, replacing the physical ache for one sharp, clarifying moment of absolute clarity. "You think my mother knew. From the very start. Before any of this happened."

"I think," Mackenzie said carefully, choosing each word like she was setting stones across ground she didn't fully trust, "your mother has always known considerably more than she has ever shared with either of us, Alpha. I think the story of a cursed bloodline was never truly about protecting this pack from ruin at all. I think it was about protecting something else entirely — something closer to home than any of us realized."

I closed my eyes, the weight of it settling heavy alongside pain already carved deep into my chest. Every version of this story I had ever been told — the danger of the Adeyemi line, the necessity of the rejection, the protection of the pack's future above all else — had come from my mother's mouth, and my mother's mouth alone. I had built the single worst decision of my entire life on nothing but her word, freely given and never once questioned.

"Find out what she knows." My voice came out low, steady despite the exhaustion dragging at every syllable I forced out. "Whatever it costs you, Elder. I need the truth now. Not her version of it. Not anymore, not after tonight."

Mackenzie inclined her head slowly, resolve settling into the careful lines of her weathered face. "I'll do what I can, discreetly, for now — your mother is not a woman who reveals her hand willingly, as you well know better than most." She paused at the door, glancing back at me with something that might have been sympathy, or something close enough to it. "For what it's worth, Alpha — whatever your mother's true reasons turn out to be, whatever truth we eventually uncover between us, the girl who walked through that door today didn't come back for herself. She came back in spite of every single reason not to. That's not nothing, whatever else proves true. Hold onto that, if nothing else."

She left me alone with that thought, and the ache in my chest — the one that had nothing at all to do with any curse — settled in for what I suspected would be a very long stay indeed.

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Eighteen: The Cost of Mending

Damien's POVWhen the three of us arrived, Elder Mackenzie was waiting in the pack's private archive room, with a stack of ancient texts spread across the table in front of her, their leather bindings cracked with age, making even the air in the room feel heavier."Sit," she said without hesitation, and something about her tone made none of us disagree."Tell us what you found," Eze said, settling into the chair across from her, his usual composure fraying at the edges.Mackenzie's fingers traced the edge of the oldest text with care and reverence. "Two hundred and eleven years ago, a Guardian named Ayo fully mended a fractured bond—not just eased the curse, but completely restored it, healing both parties as if the rejection had never happened at all." She paused, considering her next words carefully. "The records indicate she died within a week."The room became very still."How did they die?" Dara's voice was tight and controlled, as if she were holding herself together with sheer

Dara's POVEze found me at dawn, exactly where he said he would, at the edge of the training grounds where the grass hadn't yet burned off the morning dew."You didn't sleep," he said, studying my face with the kind of unbothered honesty only family gets away with."Neither did you, from the look of it." I nodded toward the dark circles shadowing his eyes. "Long night?""A long few nights." He exhaled slowly, glancing back toward the tree line as if looking for something or someone. "I notified the enclave about the meeting. Regarding the threat I mentioned. I have not heard back yet, and the silence is beginning to worry me more than an answer would."Something cold settled in my stomach. "What kind of silence are we talking about?""The kind that usually indicates someone is being cautious about what they put in writing." He shook his head, as if he were attempting to physically remove the worry. "Let's not borrow trouble until we've earned it. Today, we'll start with something simp

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Sixteen: Standing Beside Him

Damien's POVThe meeting ended with no resolution, only more questions piled on top of the ones we'd begun with, and I could feel exhaustion pulling at the edges of my vision by the time Corinne's advisors filed out and the great hall emptied."You shouldn't have come," Dara's voice, quiet and close, said. I hadn't heard her cross the room."Probably not." I pressed my hand against the table, hoping the room would stop its slow, unpleasant tilt. "But I wasn't about to let my mother and your cousin make decisions about my own survival without me present.""Stubborn." But there was something almost fond beneath the word, softer than she probably intended it to sound."You say that as if it were new information." I managed to smile, albeit at a higher cost than necessary. "How are you?" Really. That was a lot to hear all at once—enemies you didn't realize you had, threats to your bloodline, and your cousin essentially confirming your entire childhood was based on a lie."Something flicke

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna    Chapter Fifteen: Enclave and Alpha

Dara's POVI hadn't expected the pack house's great hall to feel this small.Eze stood beside me, composed in a way I envied, while Lady Corinne sat across the long table, flanked by two of her senior advisors, her expression polished into something diplomatic and completely unreadable. Elder Mackenzie took the seat closest to the door, presumably to referee whatever happened next. "Thank you for agreeing to this meeting, Lady Corinne." Eze's voice carried the careful formality of enclave training, every word measured. "The Guardian council felt it necessary, given recent events, that our two houses speak directly rather than through rumor and inference.""How generous of your council," Corinne said, dry as old parchment, "to finally recognize our existence after generations of silence.""The silence was mutual, Lady Corinne, and not without reason for either party." Eze did not flinch at her tone. "However, silence no longer serves either of our interests. Not with a bond broken so

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Fourteen: The Weight of Waiting

Damien's POVTwo days passed without word from Dara, and each one felt longer than the last, stretched thin by pain that had begun creeping back the moment her presence stopped easing it.Elder Mackenzie kept careful track of my condition, her frown deepening with each check. "The relief her proximity offers isn't permanent, Alpha. It buys time. It doesn't heal the wound itself.""I'm aware." I shifted against the pillows, the ache in my chest a constant companion now, dull but insistent, like something gnawing patiently at the edges of my resolve. "Any word from the cabin?""Kai mentioned her cousin arrived. Someone named Eze, from the Guardian enclave." Mackenzie's expression sharpened with interest. "If the enclave has sent someone directly, that confirms more than I'd dared hope — it means they're taking the situation seriously enough to intervene personally.""Or it means they see her as a threat too." The thought settled cold in my stomach. "You said yourself, Guardian bonds uns

  • The Alpha Cursed Luna   Chapter Thirteen: A Guardian's Blood

Dara's POVI woke to the smell of chamomile gone cold and the particular ache of a body that hadn't slept properly in days. Sunlight cut thin lines through the cabin's shutters, and for one disoriented moment, I forgot where I was, forgot everything that had happened — the ceremony, the rejection, the black veins spreading up a throat I used to know as well as my own. Then it all came rushing back, the way grief always does, unrelenting in the mornings."You're awake." Chidi appeared in the doorway, a steaming mug in each hand. "Good. Eze is here. He says it's important.""Eze?" I sat up, confusion cutting through the last fog of sleep. "My cousin Eze? He hasn't visited in years.""He's waiting outside. Says he came the moment he heard what happened." She handed me the mug, her expression carefully neutral in the way it got whenever she was bracing me for something. "Dara — he's Guardian enclave. Full-blooded. If Elder Mackenzie's right about your bloodline, he'll know more than any o
