Chapter 4

The clues I provided allowed Vince's investigation to proceed smoothly.

Winston was imprisoned, and aside from the investigators working on his case, no one could inquire about him.

Soon, my enraged mother-in-law began to frantically call and message me.

"Jenny, where is my son? Why can't I reach him?"

"I heard you reported my son. How could you be so cruel? What wrong did he do to you? Why do you want him dead?"

"Listen here, if anything happens to my son, I'll make you pay!"

Threatening messages were sent one after another, but I only sneered.

My mother-in-law, Ruby Holmes, had always believed that I was unworthy of his son because he was an Alpha. Since we held the bonding ceremony, she never once treated me kindly.

I worked diligently to manage the pack for Winston and respected her as much as I respected my own mother, but all I got in return was her scorn and ridicule.

When I had a miscarriage and was hospitalized, her first words to me after she rushed to the hospital were to scold me for being useless.

"If you can't even protect a child, you're not fit to be a Luna!"

From then on, she became more and more displeased with me. If anything I did displeased her even slightly, she would call to berate me. She would even bring up the past and accused me of being a hen that could not lay eggs.

I was already heartbroken over losing my child, yet every time I was scolded, I endured in silence.

I never understood why my mother-in-law was so dissatisfied with me until one day, I overheard her conversation with Winston.

"Son, when are you bringing Stacy and my granddaughter home?"

"Mom, Stacy is human. It's inconvenient to bring her back to the pack. Besides, Jenny is still the Luna. Bringing Stacy back will only cause controversy among the pack."

Ruby snorted.

"I told you not to bond with Jenny. See? Now I can't meet my daughter-in-law and my granddaughter because of her. When will you sever your mate bond with her…"

Before she could finish, Winston interrupted her impatiently.

"I won't! My pack needs the power of Jenny's family to grow stronger. Besides, I'm a devoted mate in the eyes of my subjects. If I suddenly break my mate bond with Jenny, my subjects will grow suspicious. But don't worry, I won't make you and Stacy wait too long.

"Once my pack becomes stronger, I'll accuse Jenny of cheating with another werewolf, then break the bond with a broken heart. This will quell the subjects' suspicions and garner their sympathy. So until then, please bear with it and be a little nicer to Jenny…"

As I heard this, my heart sank.

The mate I loved dearly had just been using me all along.

My beloved mother-in-law had long since envisioned another woman as her real daughter-in-law.

I felt like I was nothing but a joke.

My revenge plan had actually been brewing for some time, but Winston's trip to meet with Stacy this time gave me an opportunity.

I answered the questions of the Werewolf Management Bureau with nothing but facts, but I did conceal one thing.

Stacy had indeed approached Winston with ulterior motives, but he had actually rejected all her improper demands.

Winston was indeed a scumbag, but the interests of the werewolves were of the utmost importance to him.

However, none of that mattered anymore.

He kept a human as a lover outside.

Even if he was innocent, no one would believe him.

Vince came to see me.

His expression was exceptionally serious, which made me feel a little anxious. Had they discovered something important?

"Jenny Holmes, I would like to thank you on behalf of the entire werewolf world. Our investigation revealed that Winston has indeed betrayed the werewolves!"
