Chapter 1

Faye's POV:

I went to the pawnshop in town and set the silver pendant Sebastian had given me five years ago down on the counter.

Werewolves had an instinctive aversion to silver. When he first gave it to me, he had wrapped it in layers of black velvet before placing it in my hands. He'd said it was his mother's keepsake and told me to take good care of it.

Now, it had been exchanged for seven crisp hundred-dollar bills. That would be enough to buy me a Silverhound Lines ticket to the West Coast and start a new life in some quiet seaside town where no one knew me.

As I pushed open the pawnshop door, I ran into Mrs. Higgins coming out of the convenience store by the gas station at the edge of town.

She carried a bag of household supplies and smiled the moment she saw me, her tone teasing. "I heard the Silverfang Pack's territory is as luxurious as some grand estate. You'll be moving there with Sebastian soon, won't you? So, why are you at the pawnshop?"

The Sebastian she spoke of was my husband, one of the most formidable Alpha werewolves in all of North Arcton.

Three days ago, the ancient bloodline within him had fully awakened. A convoy from the Silverfang Pack had rolled into town in a grand procession, coming to welcome their Alpha home.

Sebastian had publicly announced that he would be taking two people back to the territory with him. However, he needed to settle the last of his affairs in the human world before he departed.

Everyone assumed those two people would be me and our son, Leo. Alas, that wasn't the case. In both my past life and this one, he had never intended to take me with him.

I smiled faintly, my tone as casual as if we were talking about the weather. "Sebastian is a powerful werewolf, but I can't even shift. This money isn't for some werewolf estate. It's my fare out of here."

Mrs. Higgins opened her mouth as if to say something more, but I had already turned away from her to head down the muddy road toward home.

Before I even reached the front yard, I heard laughter spilling out from inside.

Leo was practicing how to control the wolf claws that had just awakened within him in the middle of the lawn.

His tiny hands struggled to shift between human skin and sharp talons. Every so often, he would call out, "Papa, I can't control it!"

"Take a deep breath. Feel the call of the wild inside you. You're a born Alpha."

The man he called Papa spoke in a low, magnetic voice.

He wore a simple black T-shirt, the lines of his muscles clearly defined. Even before his awakening, he had carried an overwhelming presence. Now that his bloodline was fully awakened, there was an aura about him that could make ordinary people's knees buckle in fear.

That was my husband, Sebastian.

Five years ago, he had wandered into this remote town in Oceira. We met in the forest under the moonlight. He had been gravely injured, covered in blood, collapsed in a bed of pine needles.

I had followed the heavy metallic scent to find him, pressing my shirt against the torn wound in his abdomen as blood continued to pour out.

At that moment, the wolf within him had recognized me, but not with its eyes. It felt like wandering alone in the dark for hundreds of years, only to suddenly hear another heartbeat.

He had marked me right then.

After he recovered, he never revealed his identity as a werewolf. Instead, he put on an old flannel shirt like any ordinary lumberjack, knocked on my door, and asked if I could spare him a glass of water.

Only later did I learn that he was the sole heir to the most powerful pack in all of North Arcton.

He hadn't taken me by force as an Alpha. Instead, he pursued me as a human man.

He courted me, proposed to me, and swore he wanted to give me everything I deserved.

At the time, I believed him.

He had exiled himself to the frozen wilderness of Aliorna. No one knew why he'd done so.Still, hunters would occasionally catch sight of a lone figure through the snowstorm. It wasn't a wolf, but a man sitting alone beside a frozen lake, staring numbly toward the southern horizon like a statue sealed in ice.Anyone who betrayed the mate bond blessed by Diana would eventually face the harshest punishment. It was not divine retribution, but the tearing apart of his own soul. He had to endure the agony of being forever separated from his fated mate day and night, while feeling his str

That was the last time I ever saw Sebastian.I traveled across North Arcton in my RV for years after that final meeting, experiencing everything the world had to offer. Now, my bloodline gave me a presence so commanding that entire forests of wild wolves would bow before me.Still, there was one thing Elina had never understood. She believed having a strong bloodline meant power and conquest. What mine gave me was not the power to rule others. It gave me the freedom to never be ruled by anyone.I could stand beneath a full moon and summon the ancient wolf packs, making the mountains and forests tremble. But what I loved more was the aroma of black coffee drifting through the serving window of my food truck with the morning sea breeze. The first was power. The second was life. I had chosen the one I wanted with my eyes wide open.Over the years, I would occasionally hear rumors from the werewolf world.Elina's ambition eventually became her downfall. She was expelled from the

Sebastian stopped pursuing me because he knew that the person I had become was someone he no longer deserved.Instead, he decided to take Leo back to the territory. The day they left, Leo kept looking back at me every few steps."Mama, I'll train hard!" he called out, fighting back tears.Leo said that because Sebastian had come to see me the day before. He knew there was no future for us, but he couldn't bear to have Leo suffer for his mistakes. "Back in the territory, Leo trained as hard as he could every day because he wanted to be strong enough to protect you. He missed you. He wanted to apologize to you. Faye, I failed you. You have every right to hate me. But Leo…" He hesitated, his voice catching. "Could you…"The once-proud alpha's eyes had turned red as he looked at me with a plea so humble it was almost painful.I understood what he meant.Leo was only four years old now. He wasn't the cold, heartless werewolf he would become in my previous life.I looked at Leo an

Elina had no comeback. Fury still burned across her face. "The only reason Sebastian turned out like this is that you hid from him and played games!""So, according to you, I should've stayed in that rundown house, waiting for the day he finally remembered I existed. And when that happens, I should go down on my knees and thank him the moment he beckons me to him like some sort of pet?"Was I supposed to spend my life in fear and uncertainty just because of my weak bloodline? Was I supposed to be nothing more than a woman waiting endlessly for the man she loved? To wait for a werewolf from the age of 20 until my hair turned white? Was I not supposed to let go when our relationship was dead? Was I not supposed to do what I was doing now? How was that fair?I had already lived through that painful mistake once. I'd grown old. I'd died to an illness. I'd suffered our separation. I had endured being forgotten. My heart had already died once for my so-called mate. Never again.I f

From that day on, Sebastian and I became strangers.Even so, he continued doing whatever he pleased, shamelessly trailing after me. I did my best to ignore him.…A few days later, an unexpected visitor arrived in town."Sebastian! Was abandoning your own territory during a rebellion really worth it just for a weak woman?"Even though I had not seen her in a long time, I recognized Elina's voice immediately. She stood on the beach in a leather jacket, her blonde hair whipping in the wind. Anger blazed across her striking face.Sebastian did not answer. He simply stood on the steps, looking down at her with icy indifference. "Elina, you saved my life once. In return, I gave you the status of a Loyalist in my territory. We are even now. Go back to where you belong.""Why? Is all of this because of Faye? She's nothing but a worthless woman with a weak bloodline! You're an alpha. What is it about her that you can't forget?""Her bloodline may be weak, but she is still the mate Dia

And then, there was Leo. Unlike Sebastian, he never seemed to notice the tension between us. As far as he was concerned, the three of us were finally living together as a family again.Every morning, he would practice hand-to-hand combat on the beach. The moment he saw me, he would call out, "Mama!"When I noticed the sweat on his forehead and the eager sparkle in his eyes, I knew he was hoping I would praise him.Unfortunately for him, I dashed his hopes and said, "There are humans everywhere here. Put your claws away and get back to your territory. You should be training elsewhere.""Papa says a true alpha can temper himself anywhere," Leo replied earnestly, sounding like he actually believed what he was preaching.I did not respond. After all, Sebastian certainly hadn't taught him that in my previous life.…One day, I headed back to my RV right after closing up my food truck. Before I got there, I heard a woman's loud voice coming from the yard.It was Brenda, the biggest
