Adeline POV

I almost missed it.

A glint beneath the couch caught my eye as I bent to pick up one of the twins’ toys. When I reached for it, my fingers brushed something cold and smooth. I picked it up and confirmed it was Myra’s necklace.

The small blue gem shimmered faintly under the lamplight, the same one she always wore around her neck. The one she’d said “kept the bad dreams away.” I turned it over in my palm, a little sigh escaping me. I thought she’d lost it forever. Somehow, it had found its way back to me.

It should’ve made me smile. It didn’t. I sank onto the couch, staring at it for a while. The house was quiet. The twins were asleep upstairs, soft breaths muffled through the thin walls. I’d had a bit too much wine earlier—two glasses, maybe three. It was enough to take the edge off the day and make the silence heavier instead of lighter.

My phone buzzed. When I saw his name flash across the screen, I figured he was calling to confirm if I’ve seen it. I almost didn’t answer
