Enemies Within

Blake

It’s quiet in my office. The air is still and empty, scented with coffee and fresh ink. I move from my printer and sit at my desk, fanning through the papers I’ve just printed, which are still warm. The door leading to my suite opens with a squeak, revealing Marianna, who peeks her head in and says, “She’s asleep.”

I can’t do more than nod. “Will you let me know when she wakes up?”

“I will. Um… the moonstone sphere? I put it on her bedside table. Is that where it needs to be? Or, like, under her pillow?”

For the first time in days, I feel a single slice of calm pierce the roiling mess of emotions currently taking up all the space in my mind. It’s simply because of her, the image of her clutching the door, her dark hair swishing around her shoulders and her eyes… so blue. The perfect blue. I don’t deserve this. I never have. “That’s just fine.”

Marianna’s gaze holds mine, scanning, deeply inspecting, but I’ve trained my entire life to keep people at arm’s length.

Including her.

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   I'm Not Afraid of You

MariannaSoren meets my eyes through what I can only describe as a haze. The room looks and feels distorted, but that might be my mind trying to shield me from what I just heard and saw. Blake remains in the center of the room while Maeve backs away, her eyes wet with tears and her gaze darting from me to Soren, who looks livid as he tells his mate, “We’re done here. Come with me.”Maeve jerks into sudden awareness and turns her back on Blake. She leaves the room first, tearing into the hallway, her rapid footsteps the only sound in the vacuum of silence spreading through Blake’s office. But Soren turns to look at Blake over his shoulder with a rough sigh. “We’re going to talk this through. Don’t do anything stupid until we do.”I wait for the door to click shut. Blake doesn’t move from his spot in the center of the office, but… I have to do something. I have to say something. He beats me to it. “How much did you hear?”“It doesn’t matter. I wasn’t supposed to hear any of it, was I?

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   No One's There

MariannaMorning sunlight still plays over the garden at the townhouse when my mom walks out onto the back porch with a mug of coffee in each hand. She passes one down to my perch on the steps, squinting into the sun, where Skye is lost in the glare. She’s playing with her rocks again–the rocks she left behind when we abandoned this house, and our lives changed forever. I couldn’t sleep last night. Blake has his meeting in Veiled Valley today, apparently, but he told me he’d be back tonight–hopefully. I sip my coffee, watching Skye carefully inspect each little pebble before dropping them into a to-go container Mom’s letting her keep to carry her treasures back to the castle. “How was your first night of freedom?” I tease, and she smiles. “Quiet. I languished on the couch and watched all the shows you think are boring. I ate chips and drank wine until I went to bed.”“Mmm hmm…” I smile at her, noticing the color in her cheeks. “Were we really all that bad to live with?”“No, of co

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   A Message from the Goddess

BlakeI barely slept that night. The voices in my head were louder than they’ve ever been but totally unintelligible, like they’re trying to scream loud enough that I’ll finally understand but can’t quite get to me. The spirit of the castle in Veiled Valley lays out a large breakfast spread barely anyone touches. Aris, seated at the end of the long table in the dining hall, toys with a strip of bacon in silence, his head tilted toward the flickering chandelier. I’m sitting across from him next to Soren, who told me last night, when I found him seated in an upstairs sitting room with every single light on, that he has a thing about ghosts and isn’t a fan of this castle for that reason and is currently staring at Aris so intensely it makes me wonder what his deal is. Aris nods to himself, then smirks up at the chandelier, which flickers again. “Are you talking to that thing?” Soren spits, practically snarling. Aris startles, blinking at Soren across an array of fruit and a large pla

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Origins

BlakeSoren’s footsteps slosh through puddles beside me, covering the magical buzz of Veiled Valley’s arts district as we walk through the rain. It’s pitch black–the night sky clogged by thick, dark clouds that promise the continuation of the downpour that started moments after we arrived in the ancient, veiled city. Soren pulls his ball cap down to shield his face from the rain, grumbling under his breath as we walk through the city, crossing another bridge. “Couldn’t you have just jumped us directly to wherever it is we’re going?”“Spiriting into the Archives is forbidden. It’s actually magically impossible,” I reply over the incessant, pounding rain. Thunder booms, rattling the awnings suspended over busy restaurants and bars. “Who exactly is Arthur, and why is he so important? It’s midnight, for Goddess’s sake.”We step beneath the shelter of an awning for a moment. I peer up at the stone staircase leading to the next level of the city, which is shrouded in almost total darkness

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Music Is Magic

MariannaSarah and Sydney are with Skye, standing against the railing around the massive orrery made of copper and glass. Planets spin, tilting on their axes, while the models of stars whirl around on no set course. Blake steps to the side but keeps his hand on my arm, tugging me close, while I gaze in awe at the marvel of magical engineering taking up the entire room. We’re the only people here. We have the whole place to ourselves. The room is much warmer, thankfully, than the rest of the temple. It’s my nerves going haywire, I suppose. I watch as Sydney picks Skye up and swings her onto his shoulders, walking out of sight around the back of the orrery. Blake sighs deeply but smiles as he says under his breath, “My dad can read the positioning of the stars better than my mom can. They have a small orrery at the castle in Crescent Falls, actually. My grandfather Isaac designed it, and my grandma Maddy secretly had it built for him as a present.”“I didn’t realize that these powers
