I'm Not Sick

Maeve

My family has gathered for a final supper before everyone goes back to their usual lives. I sit at the head of the table, picking at my food, my stomach still in knots. I feel hot and cold at the same time, which is unnerving. I don’t get sick. Not unless I exhaust my powers, but the last few days have been… a real test of my limits, I suppose.

This isn’t a formal dinner by any means. Everyone is dressed comfortably and moving around, mingling in small groups. Kieran is asleep in Logan’s arms while he and Brie talk in quiet tones to my parents, while Sydney, my grandpa, and my father talk to Ryan on the far side of the room, glasses of whiskey in their hands as they stand near one of the windows overlooking the city below.

I had the meal setup in one of the upstairs rooms–the pink room, we call it. It’s wide and deep, with enough room to fit the entire family comfortably. It used to be a playroom. I remember being here as a kid with Maddy watching over all of us while the othe

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   The Architect

SorenFive months have passed since the coronation. Time has been a blur, to say the least. I’ve been all over the place lately, working my fingers to the bone to move over fifty people into hiding, and now, I’m nearly done. The man standing in the corner of the foyer of a large, well-built stone house in the plains outside of Moorn stares at the file in his hands, his face gray and washed in confusion, then startles in understanding as I watch the column of his throat bob when he swallows, his eyes flicking to mine. “Are they in danger?”“Yes,” I reply steadily, but I don’t look in the direction of his mate, a woman of maybe thirty currently sitting in the other room with their three young children. This man, a commander in King Sydney’s royal forces, was the one I knew I’d have the most trouble with. Moving the Betas was easy. The Alpha, not so much, but he eventually folded. I don’t know what's in those files the Architect supplied, but it’s enough to change their minds, that’s

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Delegation of Power

MaeveIt’s the middle of the night when I finally slide into my private apartment. Boxes of my things are stacked precariously around the foyer, all labeled to be delivered to specific rooms in the massive royal suite that takes up an entire floor two stories above me. My head pounds from wearing the crown and all the jewels that dangled from my forehead for hours even though I undressed immediately after coming off the balcony. That was hours ago. Now, I’m wearing the white ceremonial gown from when I blessed the couple performing the Rite and a dark navy blue cloak. It smells like the smoke that drifted off the lake where dozens of bonfires were burning. After the Rite, I was escorted back to the castle where a party for my grandparents was being held. It had a very select guest list, but party goers still filled the formal ballroom, and even now, in the dead of night, I can still hear the music drifting through the castle. I assume everyone else is asleep by now. It’s been the lo

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   From a Distance

SorenMoonrise has officially descended into hell. I can readily admit I’m not one for crowds. I like being alone. I enjoy peace and quiet. I dislike being pushed and shoved, and I sure as hell hate seeing every street swarmed with people, most of them sloppy drunk after a day of festivities, all of them clamoring for a view of the woman who just appeared on the wide, regal balcony of white marble overlooking the city center. Giant screens project close up shots of Maeve as she walks into view, her face set in an expression so sharp it pierces right through my chest, which warms with pride. Patton’s unable to stand still beside me and begins pacing the rooftop we’ve been lounging on for what feels like hours. My skin prickles from the insane heat of the day, even now that the sun has set, but I don’t pay the sunburn on my cheeks any mind. No, I just look at her. Watch her. Watch the way her shoulders tighten and that impeccable posture lengthens as she strides to the edge of the b

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Put on a Show

MaeveMoonrise roars as I wait in the shadowed foyer of the temple. Just feet away, a heavy set of doors will soon open to the sanctuary of the sacred place where hundreds of people are gathered to bear witness to my ascension to the throne, while a few steps in the other direction, behind yet another set of doors, the city is buzzing with nervous excitement. I’m alone for the first time since I opened my eyes this morning. My reflection in a mirror on the far wall of the foyer isn’t… me. The tall, lean young woman in an immaculate crimson gown stares blankly back at me, her eyelids dusted with gold and her wide, full lips painted a deep, dark red. Her eyes are hard and hollow–dead–but still that familiar sea-green. I reach up to run my fingers over the simple updo a trio of maids spent over an hour creating. My hair is pulled tight against my scalp and twisted into a neat bun on the top of my head, not a hair out of place. A band of brilliant rubies and flawless black diamonds res

  • The Alpha King's Breeder   Remaining Maeve

Maeve“It’s stunning. Just stunning,” Mom says as she walks a wide circle around me, her eyes glued to the gown taking up what feels like half the room. Muted pink wallpaper with gold trim takes up my vision while I stand with my back to a row of floor length mirrors, looking over the heads of Mom, Misty, Sarah, Maddy, and Aviva, all of whom are working in tandem to stretch the train the length of the room–the largest sitting room in the private royal suite on the sixth floor of the castle. “We’re running out of room back here,” Aviva says a great distance away, her voice lifted in a soft laugh. “How is she supposed to walk in this?”“It won’t be that far of a walk,” Mom replies, matching Aviva’s smile, but her eyes give away the crippling anxiety she’s feeling as she gazes down the train that easily weighs a hundred pounds and stretches over a hundred yards–at least. “Plus, she’ll have attendants to carry the train for her into the temple, and from there, the procession is only a fe
