Penelope’s POV
Maybe it was an hour, maybe it was two, I could not quite tell but I knew my lungs hurt.
Again, I tried to cry out for help, hoping anyone, someone in the pack house will be kind enough to help me up, save me and my child.I tried again, this time, my voice distant, the tears somehow dried up now and the blood did not stop.
" Anyone...please if you can hear me, help me" I cried again, yet no one came running.
This was no coincidence. The pack house on average always had women and men up and running through the corridors. I knew Dax had asked them not to touch me. Just like he always did.
Now I knew that dax loved to hit me. He made it obvious in fact. He would hit me for cooking too early, cooking too late, or cooking just in time.
And I knew the pack members had somehow grown accustomed to my everyday yells of pain.
I was on the verge of giving up, my arms were too sore to lift up now when I felt the pounding footsteps walking towards me.
I was lying on my stomach, no strength left to turn over and view who it was, but she called out to me first.
" Luna...can you move?"
I almost burst into a cry of joy.
" Mina....please help me..no one is coming, I'm dying, my baby... please" the words left my mouth in a gush, one after the other until it felt as though each word could not wait to leave my mouth.
I felt her crotch over me, gently helping me up as I winced in pain, my stomach hurting, and the only thought that laid in my head was if my baby would ever survive this.
" They won't come. Alpha dax mentioned that if anyone helps you, they will be exiled from the pack and turn rogue. I guess that was enough to keep everyone away from you" she said.
I was not surprised, but I was not expecting it either. The pang of pain in my chest only seemed to grow as I realized that this man never loved me. He loved the idea of having a goddess ordained mate, but he never truly cared about me. And it made me feel like a fool because it took all this while for the motive to finally sink in.
" No, let me go then..go quickly before someone sees you. I would hate to put you in trouble"
I tried to pry my hands away from her but she did not let go, her mind firmly made up.
" Don't worry about me, I have decided with a few others to leave this pack anyways. I might as well help you out while you still can"
The pack seemed deserted as she walked out of the pack house, the trail of blood following me as my thought wandered again.
It was obvious now. Crystal clear like daylight to me. All the warning signs I had ignored to keep my marriage were now flashing in my eyes.
I knew Laura was never his cousin. I had caught them in bed a few times together and even though he had forbidden me from ever talking about it, it did not stop my mind from shifting to that night a few times along the line.
Laura didn't have a mate or a boyfriend, yet she was pregnant. I had no idea how she was pregnant, but even her pregnancy seemed to be shrouded in mischief.
She has been pregnant for three full moons even though a normal wolf pregnancy lasts only two. And yet, everyone seemed to believe this little lie of hers.
I knew she was not carrying a baby, maybe all it took for my brain to hit factory reset was a kick in the rib and a few blows on my eyes.
But now, I could see the conspiracy clearly.
" And what the hell do you think you are doing?" A voice thundered, causing the both of us to stop in our tracks, our Messiah, which was the pack borders barely a few feet away now, so close, yet seeming so far.
" Dad please....I have to help her...I don't mind leaving this pack with her. She is dying dad, her child is dying, the future of this pack is in her and he is dying. Please father" Mina said.
She has managed to set me down on the ground again, the murky earth soaking into my clothes as she confronted her father.
I knew this man. Well maybe I didn't know him, because he was one of those omegas who loved to keep their heads low. Never a word of rebellion to the ones in higher power no matter how much ridicule it brought them.
He stuck so fiercely to the social hierarchy it was almost a form of worship for him at this point.
He pointed one bong finger at Mina, eyes trembling, not sparing me a single glance.
" Stupid girl! Do you have any idea what it means to become a rogue? You have a life here, a pack to protect you, a bed to sleep on and you have food to eat! Why would you throw that all away"
I did not realize Mina was crying until her voice shook.
" Because I don't want it! This is not life, father! This is not the life I want..they insult me, ridicule me, belittle me, there is unfairness, and if I can save this Luna who has been kind to me, then I will and I won't care about anything else"
A slap, resounding, loud, shocking.
" Stupid girl! Luna is doomed to die anyways, the alpha never liked her..don't you know she is filthy? And filth like her can never be good enough for royalty. Quick, go back in, no one saw you, I'm sure they will think she crawled out by herself"
I knew what I had to do. As much as it pained me to admit, her father was right.
" Mina..
Please, I'm fine, I can make it to the main road, please go back"My stomach ached, I refused to let her touch me, turned a deaf ear to all her pleas and watched her father drag her away.
It was for the best..he was right. I was filthy. My greatest undoing was thinking a man so great could love scum like me.
I did make it to the main road, my body aching, my child perhaps dead now.
I felt sleep threatened to come, death's cold embrace was reaching for me every so eagerly. But I did not swipe it away.
And then, just as I was about to give into death, a car light flashed, and someone got down, walking towards me.
"Please save me..." I tried to scream, but death was choking me, the words struggling against my throat until they turned into a silent mantra and slowly, death embraced me.
Penelope’s pov“Right this way,” Callum, the beta, said as he opened the door and let me in.I walked in after him as I almost gasped at the sheer size of the room before me. I could only gasp at it as he closed the door behind us and walked into the middle of the room. He spread his arms around. “It’s all yours. It’s one of our biggest rooms. Not the biggest, but you’re a special guest of the Alpha, and I clearly know some things about him. Whenever he feels a certain way towards someone, we treat that person like a special guest.”I looked around the room. “All of this… for me?” I said, as he nodded.“Yes.”I slowly walked across the wooden floors and got to the window to look out. It was beautiful here. Far more beautiful than when I was in my former pack. At least here, nobody was treating me like a slave. But I couldn’t conclude yet. Maybe Lucas was pretending. Maybe he was even worse than Dax. Maybe he was going to beat me up the way Dax would beat me up because of Laura.I tur
Lucas’s povThe day Penelope was discharged from the hospital, I made sure that a limo had to pick us up from the hospital. I wasn’t going to drive her in my fast car back to the park. That might not be good for her still healing body.“Are you in any pain?” I asked her in concern as she sat across from me in the limo. She looked around with a smile on her face.“You know… this is the first time I’ve been in a car like this.”“Trust me, it’s not going to be your last.”She stared at me for a while before leaning back.“So, is this like a rental or did you lease it for like a year or something?”I smiled. “It’s mine. You should know that we Alphas have a lot of disposable income.”“So do you, like, work for money or how does this work? How do you have so much money?” I could see she was concerned.“I have businesses running around the pack, even around the lands beyond the pack. So for someone of my caliber, you should know that I would have a lot of money.”She was confused, but that
Dax’s povI was in my throne room, staring into space as I wondered the kind of punishment that I would give to Penelope. She had defied me once more, and I was going to make her pay.“Guards!” I yelled, as a guard came forward with another one coming forward sooner.“Why were you taking so much time to come to me?” I said. They looked at me and looked at the drink in my hand.“I’m not drunk. I’m an alpha. You think I can get drunk from meager drinks?” I threw it to the side as it shattered.“Now let me warn you. Whenever I call you, you appear immediately with your speed. What if I was getting attacked? Did you think you were going to get here anytime you wanted? Was that your plan?” Before they could say anything, I flared up my aura, which had them crushing to the ground and bowing. It made me feel good that finally some people knew their places around here.“Where’s Penelope?” I said. They looked up and exchanged glances before looking back at me, but they were hesitant in answeri
Penelope’s pov“Come in,” Lucas said, as the door slowly opened with another person coming in.“Alpha,” the person smiled and gave him a bow. “The elders are here to talk to you about some things. You have a meeting… that meeting that you’ve been pushing about.”I looked from the strange man at the door to the Alpha, as he nodded.“I’ll be right down there.”The man nodded and walked away.“Who was that?” I asked, as he smiled.“My beta. I will be back. I need to go and check out this whole deal we’re having in our pack.”It felt good hearing him talk about his pack like they were all family, but I was sure that this was all a ruse. He had to be playing me. I could tell that he was just like the others. Using people to get whatever they wanted. I would not let him win. Never.I held back my anger and my rage towards my former Alpha as I looked at Lucas. He was different from Dax in a lot of ways… jovial, happy. All of this was just how Dax was in the beginning, before he changed. Dax
Penelope’s povStaring at Lucas, I noticed that anything I say might put Dax in danger. But that would also trickle down to me. Because if Dax found out that I was here, and Dax found out that I belonged to Alpha Lucas, I would be in so much trouble.I shook my head. “I can’t,” I said.He tilted his head to the left. “Excuse me?”The way he said those words hit me deeply. As I cleared my throat to speak louder, “I can’t tell you.”He scoffed, looking at the ceiling. Then he looked back at me.“But you have to. I need to know what happened to you and who did this to you. The doctor told me that you were pregnant. Now you’re no longer pregnant. That must mean that you went through something. From the bruises on your face and the bruises that were on your stomach, I am going to assume that you were beaten up, except you might have gotten into some sort of accident.“So tell me, who did this? I swear to you, I will take care of them. They won’t even see me coming. That is my promise to yo
Penelope's POV I was not sure what heaven was supposed to look or feel like, but I knew that it definitely did not come with nagging headaches and that incessant beeping sound that tested my sanity.I opened my eyes after what felt like hours, daring to survey around as I stared at the machine. What happened? I thought I was dead? The more I thought, the more my head banged in protest until finally, everything came flowing in like a gush of wind.Dax hitting me, Laura's pretense, Mina, and that person....that willowy shadow that I had seen picked me up just when I thought death had arrived.Who was he?" I can see you are awake" a voice said, startling me nearly out of my wits as I turned to look at the direction of the voice quickly. It was a doctor, I could tell that much from his coat and the tired smile he tried to keep on his face." So anything? Headaches, pains, whatever? Please tell me as it would be useful for the evaluation" I groaned." I have a headache and my shoulder f
