Alpha Lucas’s POV
The calls continued late into my drive back home, my beta, Callum briefing me about the deal we had managed to close with the dark moon pack.
" If their Alpha does not send the next payment, deploy guards to the pack grounds so they know how serious we are about our deals. I'm tired of giving them chances and watching them abuse it." I said into the speaker.
I heard calling scribble a few words in that jotter of his that he always seemed to carry around." We should get the...."
His words seemed to fade as my headlights caught sight of something laying in the middle of the road.
A deer perhaps.
I lost control of the wheels trying to dodge hitting it, the phone falling out of my hands and Callum's voice asking if I was okay floating out of the phone.
The car engine screeched to a stop as I heaved in shock. Where the hell did that come out of?
" Callum, I will call you back" I said simply, dropping the phone and getting out of the car.
The air was fresh, the wind blew in the most unnaturally refreshing way, and with it came the most lovely scent I had perceived all my life.
My steps faltered for a minute as I took on the scent, sweet and refreshing, a mixture of vanilla and honey, fading gradually, but still prominent enough to leave my wolf spinning with dizziness.
The closer I walked towards the figure I just nearly hit the more I realized it was not a deer as I had thought. It was a human.
My legs quickened as I ran towards where the person laid, grabbing her into my arms as I stared at the trail of blood she had left crawling out from wherever she had been injured.
Her yellow sundress was soaked with the blood gushing out of her, and her eyes seemed to not be able to hold open, but one thing was clear now, this woman was my mate.
" Please help me" she managed to mutter out, her eyes closing as she lost consciousness.
The panic set in almost immediately. Shit.
I ran towards the car, bundling her now limp figure into it as I sped through the forest, the hospital I had in mind playing with my vision as a thousand and one questions ran through my head.
I have tried searching for my mate for the longest time. I had searched packs, all far and wide for this one woman that was supposed to complete me.
It has been hard, but slowly I had come to the acceptance that a mate was just not in the cards for me. And now I find her, but she is bleeding quickly to death and I may lose her the same day I found her.
" Where the fuck are the doctors?!" I yelled as I barged into the hospital, her body still clad in my arms even though the nurses had rolled a small bed for me to place her on.
A doctor came running out, his eyes darting first to my face in shock and then to the woman in my arms.
" Alpha Lucas...such a pleasure to have you in my hospital..." He was talking but his formality irritated me.
" Cut that shit, help her. She is dying, if she dies I will burn this hospital to the ground with all of you in it! So stop trying to suck up to me and fucking help her!"
It was only then that he registered the gravity of the situation, his lips forming into an o as I placed her on the bed and watched them roll her into the theatre room.
Fuck.
What was going to happen to her?
I was pacing the halls nervously, not minding that everyone was gaping at me the whispers of how great my pack was filtering into my ears. But I did not care. I just wanted her to be fine.
For what felt like the seventh time, my phone buzzed in my pocket but this time it was not a call from Callum, but a text.
" Where are you? The alphas just arrived and the conference is supposed to have started ten minutes ago! Call me when you get this"
Oh shoot. I forgot all about the conference to expand borders.
But again, all that did not move me. I was too preoccupied with the thought of her to even care what was going on with the pack.
A doctor ran past me, a worried expression on his face as he made to enter back into the theatre.
" What the hell is going on?! Where is she?!" I asked, yelling into his face as he whimpered.
" We are working on it sir ...I...I have to go back in now, please give us a minute"
He bolted before I could ask again, causing my heart to sink.
I would not be able to bear it if I lost her. I would kill the entire world if I lost her.
Maybe it was hours, or bare minutes, but finally, the doctor came out, a weary expression on his face.
I could feel my heart begin to thump faster as I waited for him to speak.
" So?" I asked, feeling irritated now.
" You don't have to worry, Alpha, she is fine. We were able to stabilize her and even though she lost a lot of blood, I think she will be able to pull through in a few days and within weeks, she should be back to normal"
It felt as though the weight I had in my chest lifted and all of a sudden, I could feel the air rushing through my nose again, my breathing going back to its normal pace.
She will be fine. My mate will be fine.
" However...." He paused again.
He stared at me as though contemplating his next words carefully before finally, he sighed.
" We could not save the baby...by the time you brought her in it was too late and the..."
" Wait...baby?" I asked, perplexed.
" Yes...she was carrying a baby....it was almost time for it be birthed too. I don't know what happened to her but whatever it was, it killed the baby. We tried saving it by operating on her but it was too late, the baby had been dead for hours before she got on that table. I'm so sorry"
My heart went out to this woman I just met, this mate of mine that seemed to have a past that even I could not save her from.
" She will pull through?" I asked again.
" Yes, she will. You can come see her tomorrow, when she has had enough rest"
I nodded, trying to control my emotions in front of him.
I could not save her from the past that she was coming from, but one thing was clear, I was going to make that past pay for ever hurting her. And I did not care what it was going to take, everyone involved was going to perish.
Penelope’s pov“Right this way,” Callum, the beta, said as he opened the door and let me in.I walked in after him as I almost gasped at the sheer size of the room before me. I could only gasp at it as he closed the door behind us and walked into the middle of the room. He spread his arms around. “It’s all yours. It’s one of our biggest rooms. Not the biggest, but you’re a special guest of the Alpha, and I clearly know some things about him. Whenever he feels a certain way towards someone, we treat that person like a special guest.”I looked around the room. “All of this… for me?” I said, as he nodded.“Yes.”I slowly walked across the wooden floors and got to the window to look out. It was beautiful here. Far more beautiful than when I was in my former pack. At least here, nobody was treating me like a slave. But I couldn’t conclude yet. Maybe Lucas was pretending. Maybe he was even worse than Dax. Maybe he was going to beat me up the way Dax would beat me up because of Laura.I tur
Lucas’s povThe day Penelope was discharged from the hospital, I made sure that a limo had to pick us up from the hospital. I wasn’t going to drive her in my fast car back to the park. That might not be good for her still healing body.“Are you in any pain?” I asked her in concern as she sat across from me in the limo. She looked around with a smile on her face.“You know… this is the first time I’ve been in a car like this.”“Trust me, it’s not going to be your last.”She stared at me for a while before leaning back.“So, is this like a rental or did you lease it for like a year or something?”I smiled. “It’s mine. You should know that we Alphas have a lot of disposable income.”“So do you, like, work for money or how does this work? How do you have so much money?” I could see she was concerned.“I have businesses running around the pack, even around the lands beyond the pack. So for someone of my caliber, you should know that I would have a lot of money.”She was confused, but that
Dax’s povI was in my throne room, staring into space as I wondered the kind of punishment that I would give to Penelope. She had defied me once more, and I was going to make her pay.“Guards!” I yelled, as a guard came forward with another one coming forward sooner.“Why were you taking so much time to come to me?” I said. They looked at me and looked at the drink in my hand.“I’m not drunk. I’m an alpha. You think I can get drunk from meager drinks?” I threw it to the side as it shattered.“Now let me warn you. Whenever I call you, you appear immediately with your speed. What if I was getting attacked? Did you think you were going to get here anytime you wanted? Was that your plan?” Before they could say anything, I flared up my aura, which had them crushing to the ground and bowing. It made me feel good that finally some people knew their places around here.“Where’s Penelope?” I said. They looked up and exchanged glances before looking back at me, but they were hesitant in answeri
Penelope’s pov“Come in,” Lucas said, as the door slowly opened with another person coming in.“Alpha,” the person smiled and gave him a bow. “The elders are here to talk to you about some things. You have a meeting… that meeting that you’ve been pushing about.”I looked from the strange man at the door to the Alpha, as he nodded.“I’ll be right down there.”The man nodded and walked away.“Who was that?” I asked, as he smiled.“My beta. I will be back. I need to go and check out this whole deal we’re having in our pack.”It felt good hearing him talk about his pack like they were all family, but I was sure that this was all a ruse. He had to be playing me. I could tell that he was just like the others. Using people to get whatever they wanted. I would not let him win. Never.I held back my anger and my rage towards my former Alpha as I looked at Lucas. He was different from Dax in a lot of ways… jovial, happy. All of this was just how Dax was in the beginning, before he changed. Dax
Penelope’s povStaring at Lucas, I noticed that anything I say might put Dax in danger. But that would also trickle down to me. Because if Dax found out that I was here, and Dax found out that I belonged to Alpha Lucas, I would be in so much trouble.I shook my head. “I can’t,” I said.He tilted his head to the left. “Excuse me?”The way he said those words hit me deeply. As I cleared my throat to speak louder, “I can’t tell you.”He scoffed, looking at the ceiling. Then he looked back at me.“But you have to. I need to know what happened to you and who did this to you. The doctor told me that you were pregnant. Now you’re no longer pregnant. That must mean that you went through something. From the bruises on your face and the bruises that were on your stomach, I am going to assume that you were beaten up, except you might have gotten into some sort of accident.“So tell me, who did this? I swear to you, I will take care of them. They won’t even see me coming. That is my promise to yo
Penelope's POV I was not sure what heaven was supposed to look or feel like, but I knew that it definitely did not come with nagging headaches and that incessant beeping sound that tested my sanity.I opened my eyes after what felt like hours, daring to survey around as I stared at the machine. What happened? I thought I was dead? The more I thought, the more my head banged in protest until finally, everything came flowing in like a gush of wind.Dax hitting me, Laura's pretense, Mina, and that person....that willowy shadow that I had seen picked me up just when I thought death had arrived.Who was he?" I can see you are awake" a voice said, startling me nearly out of my wits as I turned to look at the direction of the voice quickly. It was a doctor, I could tell that much from his coat and the tired smile he tried to keep on his face." So anything? Headaches, pains, whatever? Please tell me as it would be useful for the evaluation" I groaned." I have a headache and my shoulder f
