As Mom walked to her room, I caught her trying to hide a smile, and I fought the giggle that rose up my throat too.

Heading to my own room, I realized just how relieved I felt, not just because I hadn’t been scolded, but because I’d finally said the words I’d been choking on for weeks. Telling Mom the truth about the bullying, about how Ezra Philips had helped me, had loosened something inside me. Like I could breathe again.

The idea of getting a restraining order against Nina and Samuel filled me with pure relief. It felt like for once, someone had drawn a line in the sand and said enough.
