Vivienne POV

"There's someone at the gates asking for you."

I looked up from the book in my hands. A staff member stood in the library doorway, breathless in a way that suggested she had hurried the entire way there.

"Who?"

"He says his name is Draven. He's refusing to leave."

The book suddenly felt too heavy in my hands. I set it down carefully, watching my fingers rest against the cover for a moment.

"Here? He's here?"

"The guards won't let him past the outer gate, but he's making a scene. Se

Vivienne POVThe flame rose fully in the space of a single breath, and every colour I'd braced myself for, the deep red Fenwick had described as ordinary, the colour I'd silently prepared to accept as my own quiet failure, simply never arrived.Gold. Brilliant, unmistakable, it blazed upward from the stone basin, bright enough to fill the entire chamber and cast every watching face in a warm glow that had nothing to do with the torches lining the walls. The silence that followed was absolute.I stood frozen in the centre of the stone circle, the heat of the flame reaching my skin as I stared at it. I didn't move. I wasn't sure I could.Fenwick was the first to break the silence, his voice carrying a reverence I hadn't heard from him before, not even during our earlier council meetings."The flame has spoken," he said, each word deliberate. "Vivienne Cross carries the blood of the Sable line. This council recognizes her claim as genuine, beyond any reasonable doubt the ritual could addr

Vivienne POV"You understand the process?" Fenwick asked as they led me into the council chamber."Owen explained it," I said, my voice steadier than the trembling in my hands. "The flame responds to blood. Gold if the claim is genuine."The chamber had been transformed by the time they led me in. Torches lined the walls in a pattern I didn't recognize, and the ordinary long table had been replaced by a wide, open circle of stone at the centre of the room. Ancient carvings covered its surface, worn smooth in places by years I couldn't begin to guess.Every elder was in attendance, more than I'd seen gathered at once even during the tensest council sessions. Beyond them, a smaller group of observers occupied seats near the back, representatives from allied packs and, unmistakably, two cold-eyed emissaries I recognized from Owen's earlier descriptions as belonging to Voss. They had come to witness whatever happened here personally, unwilling to trust secondhand reports for something thi

Killian POV"They've made it official," Owen said shortly after dawn, placing the statement on my desk with an expression grim enough that I braced myself before picking up the page. The statement had been sent through official channels and distributed simultaneously to every allied and rival pack across the region. The timing and coordination told me Voss had been preparing it for days, waiting only for the right moment to release it.I read it twice before setting it down. The Voss Council formally requests that Alpha Killian Cross provide verifiable proof regarding recent claims of a resurfaced Sable bloodline within his household. Absent such proof, presented through recognized pack verification channels within a reasonable timeframe, the Voss Council will consider these claims fabricated, a deliberate deception intended to manipulate political standing through false royal legitimacy. We further note that such fabrication, if confirmed, would constitute a serious violation of pa

Killian POV“One of our informants inside Voss territory confirmed something this morning.”Owen placed a single folded page on my desk and closed my study door carefully. He had delivered the report himself instead of sending it through the usual channels, which told me before he said anything else that whatever he carried was not meant for anyone else’s eyes.“Draven’s been seen repeatedly over the last several days, meeting privately with senior Voss representatives. These aren’t casual encounters. They’re scheduled meetings, held in places chosen for privacy.”I opened the report and read it slowly. The dates were spread across several days, and each meeting had taken place in a different location. The physical description matched Draven, and the pattern was too deliberate to dismiss. He wasn’t meeting them by chance. He was making sure he was seen by the right people while keeping the meetings away from anyone who might question them.I read the report a second time, paying clos

Killian"Alpha Renfield's people are asking questions."The advisor set a folder on my desk, and the look on his face told me the news was not going to be good."Specifically about a 'Sable heir,'" he said. "The phrase came up twice in conversations our people overheard at yesterday's regional council session. Neither instance traced back to anyone we've spoken to directly."I looked at the folder. "Twice, in one afternoon. That's not idle speculation. That's someone actively spreading it.""That was my assessment as well."By the following morning, three more reports had reached me, each from a different regional contact and each describing the same phrase surfacing in conversations among packs with no obvious connection to each other.Whoever had started this was not simply gossiping to one confidant. They were spreading it deliberately and methodically, making the rumor look as though it had come from different sources rather than a single leak.I summoned Owen immediately, spread

  • The Alpha King's Unclaimed Queen   Chapter 43: His Vow

KillianI sat alone in my study long after Vivienne had gone to rest. The fire had burned down to embers, and the reports Owen had left for me hours ago were still untouched on the desk.I kept thinking about the one thought I had not said aloud to Vivienne. It had come to me the moment she finished telling me the truth, and I had pushed it away because I was ashamed of how quickly it had appeared. Her claim could stand above every Alpha's authority. Her bloodline could, in theory, end every political challenge I faced simply by being made public and formally recognised. If I were a different man, colder and more calculating, I could have built an entire campaign around that discovery. I could have joined my crown to a claim no one could challenge. I could have used her exactly as she had feared I might when she finally told me the truth.I let myself think through that path instead of pushing it away. It would solve almost every threat around us. Voss's ambitions could collapse und
