The Third Anniversary

Ivy woke before dawn with a single thought sitting quietly in her chest.

"Today, I save my marriage."

It was their third anniversary. She had decided, somewhere in the sleepless hours after overhearing Sophie in that restaurant, that she would not let one conversation undo three years. Maybe Sophie was scheming. Maybe she was dangerous. But Darien was still hers, still the man who had once looked at her like she was the only steady thing in a moving world, and Ivy was not ready to let that memory go without a fight.

She spent the morning in the kitchen, making his favorite meal from scratch, the one his mother used to make before she passed, the recipe Ivy had spent a full year learning to get exactly right. She hung soft lights along the terrace. She wrapped the small box again, the one with the photograph inside, and set it at the center of the table like a promise.

Today, she would tell him about the baby. She checked the clock. It Seven in the evening. Darien was late, but Darien was always late these days, and she told herself it meant nothing.

The candles burned low and she relit them.By ten, she was still sitting alone at a table set for two, the food gone cold under its covers, when she heard his car in the driveway.

He came in only long enough to grab a folder from his study. He didn't notice the terrace lights, or the table, or the dress she had chosen carefully that morning.

"Darien."

"Not now, Ivy, I have a meeting."

"It's our anniversary."

That stopped him, briefly. He looked at her, and for one second something crossed his face that might have been guilt. Then his phone buzzed and the moment passed.

"I know. I'm sorry. Things have been insane." He was already moving toward the door. "We'll celebrate this weekend, I promise."

"A meeting. Tonight."

"With Sophie. Investor relations, some paperwork from the funding." He paused at the door, patting his jacket for his keys. "It's important, Ivy."

Ivy's eyes drifted to the back seat of his car through the open door. A gift bag sat there, glossy and expensive, ribbon curled with the kind of care that came from a store, not from a rushed assistant.

"Who's that for?"

Darien followed her gaze and, for a moment, had the decency to look uncomfortable. "Sophie. She worked hard to save the pack. I wanted to thank her properly."

"On our anniversary."

"It's not like that."

"I didn't say it was," Ivy said quietly, though something in her chest had already begun to fold in on itself.

Darien crossed the room, kissed her cheek quickly, distractedly, the kiss of a man already halfway out the door in his mind. "I'll make this up to you. I swear it."

Then he was gone, and Ivy stood alone in a room full of candlelight that no longer meant anything.

She followed him.

She did not plan to. She told herself, the entire drive, that she was only making sure, that there was an innocent explanation, that Darien had never once given her real reason to believe he would betray her. She repeated it like a prayer until the car pulled up outside a luxury apartment building she did not recognize, and Darien got out, gift bag in hand, and disappeared inside.

Ivy sat in her car for a long time before she followed.

The elevator ride felt endless. She found the door by the sound of laughter drifting from inside, Sophie's laughter, warm and easy in a way that made something in Ivy's stomach turn to ice.

She stood outside the door and heard Sophie's voice clearly.

"What about your wife?"

A pause. Then Darien, low, almost bored.

"I'll deal with Ivy soon."

The words landed like a blow. Ivy stood frozen in the hallway with her hand hovering over the door handle, and for one long moment she thought about turning around, going home, pretending she had never come, never heard, never known.

Instead, she opened the door. The apartment was warm and softly lit, wine glasses on the table, Sophie standing close to Darien with one hand resting on his chest.

They both turned at the sound of the door.Sophie's face went through a series of expressions so fast it would have been comical if Ivy's whole world hadn't been collapsing at the same time. Darien's face simply went pale.

"Ivy. This isn't—"

"Happy anniversary, husband," Ivy said.

Her voice came out steadier than she felt. Steadier than she had any right to feel, standing in a doorway watching three years of marriage rearrange itself into something unrecognizable.

Sophie stepped back from Darien quickly, smoothing her dress, already reaching for the shape of an explanation. "Ivy, it's not what it looks like. We were only discussing—"

"I don't remember asking," Ivy said.

She looked at Darien. Really looked at him, the way she had wanted to look at him for months and hadn't let herself, afraid of what she might see. What she saw now was a man who could not quite meet her eyes.

"I'll deal with Ivy soon," she repeated softly. "That's what you said. Like I'm a problem on a to-do list."

"Ivy, that's not—"

"Don't." Her voice cracked on the single word, and she hated herself for it, hated that even now, even here, some part of her still wanted him to fix it, to cross the room and prove the last thirty seconds were a mistake.

He didn't move and in the silence that followed, Ivy understood, with a clarity that felt like falling, that whatever she had come here hoping to save had already been gone for longer than she wanted to admit.

"Explain it to me," Ivy said. "Clearly. I want to hear you say it out loud."Darien ran a hand through his hair, and for the first time in longer than she could remember, he looked genuinely rattled. "There's nothing to explain. Sophie asked me to come over to go over paperwork. It's late because the funding is complicated. That's all this is.""With wine. And a gift bag.""A thank you gift. She saved the pack, Ivy.""So did I."The words left her before she could stop them, and for one dizzying second she almost told him everything, the calls to Corvin, the billion dollars, the patch at her neck that hid an entire bloodline. But Sophie was watching her too closely, her eyes bright and calculating even through the tears gathering at their edges, and something in Ivy refused to hand this woman one more thing to use against her."What do you mean, you saved the pack?" Darien asked, frowning."Nothing," Ivy said. "Forget it."Sophie chose that moment to sniffle, delicately, dabbing at he

  • The Alpha Rejected His Hidden Luna    The Woman Who Saved His Pack

By morning, the news had already spread through every level of Moonshadow Pack. They had been saved. A billion dollars, delivered overnight, and the name attached to the miracle was Sophie Bennett. Darien called an assembly in the great hall before noon, and when he stood at the front of the room and told the pack who had rescued them, the applause that followed was loud enough to rattle the windows.Ivy stood near the back, half hidden behind a pillar, and watched Sophie accept the applause with a bowed head and a hand pressed modestly to her chest, as though the attention embarrassed her.It did not embarrass her. Ivy could see that from across the room. Sophie's eyes moved over the crowd the way a queen's eyes move over a coronation, counting the bows, counting the faces that now looked at her differently."I only did what anyone would have done," Sophie said, and the pack cheered louder.Ivy slipped out before the assembly ended. That evening, Darien found her in the kitchen, slic

  • The Alpha Rejected His Hidden Luna    The Secret Heir

The representative met her in the back room of a restaurant that did not appear on any map most humans could find. His name was Corvin, and he had served her grandfather for thirty years before he had started serving her in secret. He was a thin man with sharp eyes and a way of folding his hands that made Ivy feel, every single time, like a child being called into a headmaster's office."You transferred it," he said. Not a question."I did.""A billion dollars. To save a man who does not know your name is on the account that funds half the West Coast." Corvin set down his water glass with exact precision. "Miss Callaway. Forgive me. How long do you intend to keep doing this?""As long as it takes.""Takes for what."Ivy looked at her hands in her lap. "For him to need me the way I need him."Corvin's expression did not change, which was somehow worse than if it had. "Your grandfather built Nightclaw from nothing. He gave you everything, the training, the bloodline, the throne waiting

  • The Alpha Rejected His Hidden Luna    The Billion Dollar Crisis

The numbers on the screen did not change no matter how many times Darien looked at them.Moonshadow Pack was bleeding money. Three major investments had collapsed in the same quarter, and the creditors calling his office were no longer polite about it. Darien Blackwell stood at the head of the conference table with his palms flat against the glass, staring down at a spreadsheet that read like a death sentence written in red."Say it again," he said. "Slower."His chief financial officer did not look up from his tablet. "Without one billion dollars in new funding by midnight, we lose the northern territories. The distilleries. Half our shipping contracts. Possibly the pack house itself.""Midnight," Darien repeated."Midnight."The room stayed silent except for the tapping of someone's pen. Darien had built Moonshadow into something that mattered. He had bled for it, clawed for it, taken it from a pack barely worth the name and turned it into one of the strongest on the coast. And now
