The rest of the day passed in a blur.

I tried reading one of the books I'd borrowed from the library downstairs. I made it through the same page four times without remembering a single sentence.

I tried watching television.

Every news channel had somehow found a new way to discuss the Choosing. So I turned it off.

Instead, I found myself sitting by the floor-to-ceiling windows, my knees tucked beneath my chin as I watched the city below. People walked to work. Cars filled the streets. Somewhere

"...as her third Chosen."The room fell into a complete, awkward silence.I stared at Sinclair. Then at Emmett. Then at the bouquet of white roses still resting in my arms.My brain seemed to have paused somewhere between the words 'third' and 'chosen.'A voice came from the hallway. "Absolutely not."I looked up as Rafe stepped into the room. His arms were crossed over his chest, his expression colder than I'd seen since I met him.Emmett blinked at him. "You weren't even in the room.""I heard him."Sinclair remained seated, looking far too calm for someone who had just dropped a bombshell on us.Rafe's eyes settled on him. " No."Sinclair raised an eyebrow. "No?""No."Emmett looked between them. "Oh boy.""That's your entire argument?" Sinclair asked in disbelief. "At the moment," Rafe responded.Sinclair's usually calm face churned into a mix of displeasure and surprise. Being told 'no' surprised him enough, but having no argument or reasoning was beyond him.I couldn't help it.

Time seemed to stand still as the elevator doors opened. Valentin Sinclair stepped into the penthouse dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit, his dark hair neatly styled and his expression as composed as usual.Only this time, he wasn't standing beneath the lights of the Choosing. And he wasn't looking at a room full of women. He was looking at me.My eyes lowered to what he was holding.Flowers. A beautiful bouquet of white roses rested in one hand.I blinked in confusion."You must be joking," Emmett muttered, looking at Sinclair. Rafe only crossed his arms, his expression failing to mask irritation.Basil, who had been sitting quietly on the sofa, suddenly looked like he wanted to disappear.Sinclair's eyes moved across the room. They stopped on Basil. His expression changed almost imperceptibly. "Basil."Basil swallowed. "My Lord."Sinclair stared at him. Then at the twins. Then back at Basil."I wasn't aware you'd been appointed ambassador to the werewolves."Emmett's lips t

**6 hours earlier**Valentin Sinclair's POV♡The moment I stepped into the boardroom, I felt that something was wrong. Not just because I was met with the familiar dead stares of six out of seven of this continent's vampire lords. Not even because today's meeting had been emailed to me with the heading 'Emergency: Subject of Rh-null type human' in bold font.My eyes moved across the room until they landed on the one person who had absolutely no business being there.Victor Moreau. My expression hardened. That was definitely what felt wrong."You summoned my council," I stated as a matter of fact.Victor looked up from his seat. "I did."I slowly turned toward him. "You summoned royalty. Not even from your own continent. International royalty."He was insulting me and every vampire in this room. The thought made my fangs itch to sink my teeth into his neck and rip his head off.A few of the Lords shifted uncomfortably.Victor remained completely composed. "I believed the matter was im

By the time Basil arrived the next day, the sun had already disappeared behind the buildings.I had spent the last couple of hours trying not to think about what he might tell me, but my efforts hadn't worked. The elevator chimed, and I looked up from the sofa.Duke stepped out first. Then Basil. He looked almost exactly as he had during the Choosing, dressed in an immaculate suit with that polished smile I'd seen on stage.Except there was no smile today. His expression was serious as he approached."Alphas."Rafe stood from the armchair. "Basil. We appreciate you coming at such short notice."Emmett remained beside the fireplace, his arms folded.Basil nodded. "I've been waiting for your call."His eyes found me, and he gave me a respectful nod. "And I imagine Ms. Jacobs has questions."I swallowed. "A few."Rafe gestured toward the sofa. "Sit."Basil took

Rafe's bedroom was still as painfully clean as it had been in the morning. The only difference was the neatly folded blanket resting on the couch.I glanced at it, then back at him. "You really were planning to sleep there.""I did say I would.""You could've just told me to sleep on the couch.""You need proper sleep."I stared at him. "So do you.""Werewolves used to sleep on the dirt in forests with harsh conditions. A couch won't kill me." He said boredly. I pursed my lips, unable to argue with that. Rafe picked up the book he'd left on his bedside table and walked toward the couch. I watched him for a moment before sitting on the edge of the bed.The events of the day still felt unreal.Victor's words and what that meant for me.About the blood inside my veins that apparently made me valuable enough for vampires to consider buying me. Even though I still didn't understand what the value really was.My mind returned to Aunt Sarah. She was alive. She was recovering. For the first

Somewhere in the distance, children laughed in a nearby park. The elevator chimed more times than I could count throughout the afternoon. Guards came and went with clipped conversations, each one reporting something to Rafe before disappearing again.Rafe himself never wandered too far. He wasn't besides me. He even wasn't talking to me.But he never left the room for long either.Sometimes he stood near the fireplace, reading through something on his tablet.Sometimes he made coffee.Sometimes he disapp
