Lucien did not fight back.

Kael's fingers tightened around his throat, crushing the air from his lungs. Black veins spread beneath Kael's skin, crawling from his palm toward his elbow.

His eyes were completely black.

No silver.

No recognition.

Only darkness.

“Kael,” Lucien rasped.

Kael slammed him against the stone wall.

The impact cracked the ancient masonry.

Lucien's wolf howled inside him, demanding that he defend himself. One command from the beast could break Kael's grip. One strike could send the Moon King flying across the chamber.

But Lucien remembered the sword.

He remembered the moment the command had taken control of his body and forced him to raise a blade against the person he loved.

He would not become that monster again.

Even if Kael killed him.

“Please,” Lucien whispered. “Come back to me.”

Kael's expression did not change.

His free hand rose.

Silver light gathered around his fingers, forming a blade aimed directly at Lucien's heart.

Behind them, Rowan drew his sword.

“We have to stop him!”

“No!” Kael's mother shouted.

Rowan hesitated.

The Crimson Queen stared at Kael with tears in her eyes.

“If you strike him now, you may destroy the last thing keeping Azrael from taking complete control.”

“Then what do we do?” Rowan demanded.

Nobody answered.

Because the truth was becoming painfully clear.

They had no idea how to save him.

Elara stood motionless in the middle of the chamber, watching Kael with an expression far too old for her small face.

“Let him finish,” she whispered.

Seraphine turned on her.

“What?”

“Let him kill Lucien.”

Kael's mother gasped.

Elara continued as if she had not heard them.

“The bond must be severed completely. If Lucien dies, the door closes.”

“That's a lie!” Rowan snapped.

Elara looked at him.

“Is it?”

The shadows curled around her ankles.

For a moment, the chamber seemed to tilt toward her.

“You all keep saying the rejected bond opened the door. But none of you have asked why the door was there in the first place.”

Kael's silver blade trembled.

Lucien struggled to breathe.

Elara took one step closer.

“The first pact needed three things. The Moon heir. The awakened daughter. And a bond rejected before it could be completed.”

Seraphine's face drained of color.

“Stop talking.”

“Why?” Elara asked. “Because he might remember?”

The word remember struck Kael like a physical blow.

His fingers loosened.

A flicker of silver appeared in his eyes.

Lucien dragged in a ragged breath.

“Kael?”

Kael's head jerked toward Elara.

For one terrifying second, his expression changed.

He looked at her as though he recognized her from somewhere beyond memory.

Then his lips parted.

“You were there.”

Elara went still.

Kael's voice emerged deeper than before, layered with another voice beneath it.

“You were there when they made me.”

Seraphine covered her mouth.

“No…”

The silver blade dropped from Kael's hand and shattered against the floor.

His grip loosened further.

Lucien fell to his knees, coughing, but he never stopped looking at Kael.

“That's it,” he whispered. “Stay with me.”

Kael staggered away from him.

He clutched his chest.

The second heartbeat was no longer beating in time with his own.

It was counting down.

Three.

Two.

One—

The Moon Crown appeared above Kael's head.

Not the physical crown resting beneath the ruined kingdom.

This was its reflection, formed from silver fire and jagged black metal. It hovered over him, trembling as if two opposing forces were fighting for control.

The shadows bowed again.

But this time, they bowed toward Kael.

Azrael's laughter filled the chamber.

“You see, Seraphine? You cannot hide what he is.”

Kael lifted his head.

His eyes were still black, but a thin silver ring circled each pupil.

“What am I?” he asked.

Azrael answered from within him.

“You are the vessel they prepared before you were born.”

Kael's mother shook her head violently.

“No. Your father tried to prevent that.”

“My father made me a vessel?”

“He was trying to contain the fourth bloodline. He believed that if its power lived inside you, Azrael could never fully return.”

“And the second heartbeat?”

Her silence was answer enough.

Kael looked down at his chest.

All those years, he had believed himself weak.

Unwanted.

A broken omega rejected by the man destined to love him.

But the truth was worse.

Someone had decided what he would become before he had ever taken his first breath.

“You all knew,” he whispered.

Rowan lowered his sword.

“Not everything.”

“You knew enough.”

“Kael—”

“Don't call me your prince.”

The words silenced him.

Kael turned toward Lucien.

The Alpha was still kneeling, one hand pressed to his throat. His eyes shone with pain, but there was no accusation in them.

That hurt Kael more than anger would have.

“I nearly killed you.”

Lucien slowly rose.

“You came back.”

“I could do it again.”

“Then I'll fight to bring you back again.”

“You cannot keep sacrificing yourself for me.”

“Perhaps not.” Lucien swallowed painfully. “But I can choose what I do with my life.”

A faint glow appeared beneath his collar.

The mark of his wolf.

Lucien pressed his hand against it.

Kael recognized the expression on his face.

“No,” Kael said immediately.

Lucien looked at him.

“You don't even know what I'm going to do.”

“I know that look.”

For the first time, Lucien almost smiled.

“I told Azrael I would hear his offer.”

Kael's blood turned cold.

“What offer?”

Lucien's fingers tightened over his mark.

“The only way to stop the command from forcing me to kill you may be to surrender my wolf.”

“Absolutely not.”

“Kael—”

“I will not let you destroy yourself to save me!”

The Moon Crown flashed.

The second heartbeat stopped.

Every shadow in the chamber vanished.

For one impossible moment, the world became silent.

Then Elara screamed.

A black symbol appeared on her forehead—the same symbol that had once been carved into the walls of the ancient fourth kingdom.

Seraphine stumbled backward.

“My God…”

Elara's eyes rolled upward.

When she spoke, her voice was no longer that of a child.

It was a woman's voice.

A voice Kael had heard only in visions.

“Azrael, my love. If you can hear me, do not trust the children.”

The Crimson Queen began to sob.

Seraphine whispered a name.

“Elaris.”

And from somewhere beyond the sealed doors, a woman answered.

“I am coming for my daughter.”

Kael could not look away from the figure beyond the mountains. It had Lucien's face. The same sharp jaw. The same dark hair. One hand remained pressed against his chest, where the five interlocking circles glowed beneath his skin.Kael turned toward him.“Do you know who that is?”Lucien shook his head.“No.”His answer came too quickly.Kael noticed. So did the boy standing beside him.“You're lying,” the child said.Lucien's gaze snapped toward him.“Be careful what you accuse me of.”The boy laughed bitterly.“You always say that when you remember something you don't want anyone else to know.”Lucien went still.Kael looked between them.“What does that mean?”
