Ares' pov
"Let them begin," I said into the receiver and tossed the phone to the side.
I growled at the pile of work that stared back at me on the table.
Watching a stupid maid inspection was the least of my worries. But it's the job I need to do in person. My maid should be someone I could trust with.
I ran my fingers through my hair as I picked up the first file.
"What's this rubbish?" I growled and tossed the first presentation into the wastebasket next to me.
After going through a couple more files and thrashing them like the first, I threw my head back on the chair and my eyes landed on the large screen in front of me.
Just before I could look away, my eyes caught a redhead.
Well. I'd say she was beautiful but that wasn't what had caught my attention because I'd seen a lot of beautiful women in my long life.
What caught my attention was her bold stance and the way she stared at Jason while he briefed them about the inspection.
She was easily the smallest amongst all the other girls but while they cowered in fear and had their eyes glued to the ground, her gaze didn't waver as she looked right at Jason.
Unconsciously, my lips tugged upward a bit of a fraction and I leaned deeper into my seat.
Maybe watching the maid inspection wasn't so stupid after all.
"Move!" Jason said to the girls as he led them outside to the open backyard of the pack house.
His countenance was different but I didn't blame him.
The death of his girlfriend had been announced yesterday and even though I barely knew the woman personally except when I gave her orders through phone calls, I knew he loved her very much and was affected my her death.
My eyes went back to the redhead and just as she passed the threshold of the house, she looked right at the door where the camera was.
She tilted her head to the side as she stared right at me.
It felt like she was staring right into my soul and I shifted uncomfortably in my seat.
After what felt like an hour but was just a few seconds, she looked away and continued walking and I released a breath I didn't know I was holding.
"What was that?" I asked myself.
No woman had ever made me feel uncomfortable with just a glance like she did.
It was always the other way around.
I didn't like this.
But I couldn't tear my gaze off her and I could swear I felt my dick twitch as she swayed her full hips to the center where they were meant to stand.
"What the fuck is wrong with me?" I growled.
Damn Stress.
Of course, it had to be it.
I was too stressed and hadn't had time to be with any woman, which was why my body was reacting to her.
"For the first round of this maid inspection," Jason started. "You're all going to do laundries," he pointed to the piles of clothes and buckets of water behind him. "You begin at the sound of the buzzer and end when it goes off again. Your work must be swift and neat. Any question?" He asked loud and clear.
"I have a question," the redhead spoke up and her voice was as soft as velvet.
"Yes?" Jason, who looked like he wasn't too pleased, asked.
"Why do we have to do a maid's inspection when you can just pick at random? I think this is a waste of time if you asked me," she said.
My eyebrows arched.
She asked her question with such confidence that even Jason looked surprised for a few seconds before regaining his composure.
"Are all of you fit to work for the Alpha?" Jason asked.
"The Alpha is all about competence. If they're working in the pack house as maids, it's because they're competent enough," she shrugged.
My smirk increased and I didn't miss the way she said "they" instead of "we".
"You seem to know the Alpha so well, huh?" Jason asked.
"Not personally," she replied easily.
Who was this girl?
Jason looked at her for a few seconds before looking away.
"If there aren't any more questions, you may begin," he said and the buzzer went off.
The other girls scurried to get started while the girl rolled her eyes and leisurely walked to the space that was left for her.
The girls worked with so much speed and I shook my head at their hipocrisy.
It wasn't a secret that people feared to work for me because of the rumor that I had a secret and would kill any staff that found it out, but they still wanted to be beree because of the fat paycheck and mouthwatering benefits of working for the Alpha.
My eyes remained glued to the redhead who was working at her own pace till the buzzer went off.
"Okay," Jason said after inspecting everything. "We move unto the next round," he announced. "In this round, you're all going to be cleaning rooms that haven't been opened in years," he told them as led them into the house. You begin at the sound of the buzzer and stop when it goes off. Any questions?"
The redhead looked like she had something to say but balled her palms in fists.
She was really…. interesting.
"Good," Jason said when there no questions asked and led them to the rooms.
I minimized the screen so I could see every room at once and only put it back in full screen when the redhead was given a room.
Her nose was scrunched up in disgust as she took in the room and the first word that came to my mind was "cute".
"Get a hold of yourself," I muttered to myself and continued watching her.
Her pace had reduced even more as she cleaned and she would stop a number of times to catch her breath.
She sure was weak for someone so witty.
I didn't know when I jolted up from my seat as she was about to fall but Jason was quick to catch her.
I frowned as my eyes zeroed in on his hand that held her elbows.
"You don't seem so competent anymore," Jason said with a mocking smile after she steadied herself, which made my jaw twitch.
The cleaning continued till the buzzer went off and she had barely managed to finish.
She wasn't the fastest at the tasks but her work was neat and she worked with diligence.
Beads of sweat formed on her forehead and there was a firm scowl on her face as they were led back to the living room.
"Now, the final round. In this round, you're all going to make a special meal for the Alpha," Jason announced.
I saw the redhead's mouth fall open.
What? She doesn't cook? This is getting more interesting.
"What?" I gawked at him. "What?" Jason turned to me. "Do you have a problem with this as well? Because you seem to have a problem with everything," he said. I squared my shoulders and pulled my best fake smile. "There's no problem," I said. "Good," he nodded once and looked away. I muttered a string of curses under my breath. Cooking? Why?! I managed to do the laundry because I did a lot of that when I was away at camp and didn't have access to the washing machine and the cleaning because I helped clean the house most times when I wasn't so busy with work, but cooking? That was where I drew the line. I didn't know the first thing about that. Why didn't they give us tasks like shooting targets on a moving horse or something? I groaned inwardly as I watched Jason speak. I'd never felt the urge to slap someone across the face like I felt like doing Jason. He had been picking on me all day. Was he always this annoying and I didn't notice because I was blinded with love? Ye
“Me?” I pointed at my chest.Don't blame me, but this came as a surprise because I knew I hadn't done as much as so many other people. How was it possible that I had been chosen?Jason gave me a pointed look that said he thought I was an idiot before looking away.“Get your things and meet me outside in five,” he said without sparing me another glance and walked out with the lady who had previously introduced herself as Clara.I rolled my eyes at his snobbish behavior and vaguely wondered if he had always been that way.Well, I didn't mind his behavior as long as I would be getting out of here.Speaking of which, I turned around to meet scornful glares and some girls had their hands over their mouths as they giggled behind them.“What's funny?” I snapped. My reaction must have surprised them because more than a couple of gasps were heard.“She really back-talks now,” one girl whispered to the other girl beside her.Well, duh.“Oh, nothing,” one of the girls, out of the abundant kindne
“Shut up and sit like the pretty maid that you are. Know your place and remain there,” he growled. He didn't let me finish. Fine. Jason. Fine.I stared at him for a few seconds before rolling my eyes and looking out the window.Surprisingly, we were already pulling into the Alpha's castle. The car soon rolled to a stop in front of the house and I hopped out of the car, wanting to get away from Jason as soon as possible before my anger hit the ceiling, but the elegance I had imagined while exiting the car wasn't exactly how it happened and from how I overstepped, the next thing I knew the world was tilting to the side and I fell face first on the ground.“Oww,” I groaned and rubbed my palm flat on my nose to ease the pain.Jason chuckled and Clara snorted as they walked past me.“Competence indeed,” Jason said under his breath but clear enough for me to hear.He was mocking me.“Yeah, thanks for your help,” I said sarcastically and rolled my eyes before helping myself up.I dusted my
Ares' pov“Good night….I mean…good day, Alpha,” the voice of whoever had picked the intercom stuttered and I rolled my eyes.“Send the new maid up,” I said firmly.“Wha…wha…”The long beep followed as I ended the call, not having any time to mince words.I knew the effect I had on people and I loved it. I loved to exercise control and power while instilling fear in people. I loved it that way. That was who I was and I wasn't changing.I didn't even know why I requested to see the new maid. Maybe it was her confidence during the tests or just my wolf sending signals to the rest of my body and messing up with my logical thinking.I turned back to the screen of my laptop and scrolled aimlessly.I couldn't concentrate.I hadn't been able to since…“Fuck!” I groaned and hit my fist on the table, not enough to break it.I'd had my table changed more than five times this month and we're barely on the sixteenth day.“This won't do,” I shook my head and stood up, walking straight to the bathr
I stared at him like he had grown a second head.Maybe he has.“Mate,” he repeated, more surely this time.I frowned and my hands fell on my sides. I tried to feel it.Yes, there was a stir somewhere deep inside me but nothing else.I'd heard tales of how mates felt when they found each other but I felt almost nothing. Was this a joke?I wanted to laugh in his face but the look he gave me made even me hold my tongue.Different emotions crossed his eyes at once from anger to sadness to pain and was that….regret?“No,” I said inwardly. This was the last thing I needed.I didn't need a mate. Not now.And especially not one that was looking at me like he wanted to rain fire and brimstone over my head.“Mate,” he said and this time, every emotion in his voice and eyes were replaced with just two.Hate and disgust.Right at that moment, I knew it.I didn't need to be told.I knew what was running through his mind.It was as clear as day.“I….”That was my cue.I cut him off and beat him to
I looked around the hallway and tried to walk normally.I mean as normal as one who has a plan under their sleeves would walk.Cautiously, I took another step forward and I felt giddy inside as I saw the bright blue sky, something I hadn't seen in the three days I've been here.I crossed the threshold of the large doors and the crisp smell of air wafted through my nostrils, causing me to inhale deeply and filling me with warmth.A small smile spread across my cheeks and I wished I had more time to bask in the warmth of the sun but I knew I had limited time.I stepped on the grass and barely another step later, the world flipped to the side and my body collided with the ground with a loud thud.“Oww,” I grunted loudly and turned upward, still laying on the ground. Two guards came in view, standing above me with their swords drawn.“What are you doing?” The meaner one asked.Standing up there, staring down at me, and me laying down here with the sun threatening to blind me, wasn't exact
“Who are you?” I found myself repeating her question. This person obviously didn't like to be asked questions because her over-lined red lips curved up in a sneer. She was beautiful with bright blue eyes but those eyes held animosity as she stared down at me from her six-inch heels.“Haven't seen you around here before. You must be the new maid,” she said.“Haven't seen you around either,” I retorted.I knew I was being annoying but who cares? She narrowed her eyes in slits and bent down a bit so we were eye-level.“You seem not to know your place. I am the Alpha's….”The door burst open, cutting her off and she immediately stood upright and straightened her dress with her palm.I didn't even need to turn around to know who had entered. His presence, strong and domineering filled the room, almost bringing me to my knees.“What are you doing here?” His husky voice boomed. The woman, whose name I still didn't know, turned to me with a knowing smirk and crossed her arms over her chest.I
Ares' pov“Fuck!” I growled angrily and upturned the large desk till it fell a few feet away from me.My whole body reverberated with anger and I felt my wolf just on the surface, ready to devour anything on his path.My chest heaved up and down rapidly as I stared at the closed door which she had just walked through. How could someone so tiny be so infuriating? But then again, how was she getting to me?I had built walls around of myself and spent centuries mastering the art of not giving a fuck and right now, all those years and everything I knew, I felt slipping out of me.I really couldn't tell if it was her confidence that I couldn't do anything to her or the fact that I really can't do anything to her angered me the most.Running my fingers through my hair, I picked up my phone. The person on the other end picked on the first dial.“Replace my table!” I barked and hung up.That was all I needed to say and in less than three seconds, four guards walked into my office.Their eyes
