“Why wouldn’t I exile her? Why does she feel familiar? he pondered as he sat at his table.

Kael was struggling to understand the connection he shared with a rogue. Something about her kept drawing him but he couldn’t figure it out.

“Arggghhh!” he yelled in frustration again. “It’s so annoying to be confused. Whoever this odd rogue is, I must find out,” he said running his hands through his hair.

Selene headed for her father — the beta’s chamber. She knew her father and brother — Lucan—would be waiting for her. Selene walked into the chamber with a grim expression.

“What’s wrong? Is the Alpha alright?” Darian asked.

“No, he’s not.” Selene said, her voice laced with frustration and concern. “As I walked out of his chamber he still looked really confused,” she added.

“What could have made him walk out on the shadow warriors?” Darian thought aloud.

“I guess it’s a worthless rogue,” Selene said angrily.

“Hey, slow down,” Lucan cautioned her.

“You should check on him dad,” she said, persuading her father.

“Alright.” Darian said as he walked out and headed for the Alpha’s chamber.

“He’d be fine Selene, you should know that by now.” Lucan said, he tried to persuade his little sister.

“You know what really annoys me is that new recruit,” she said, as she faced Lucan with sharp eyes. “I wonder why Kael can’t just have her banished. She’s the reason for all this.”

“By ‘the new recruit’ you mean Lyra?” Lucan asked.

“I don’t know her name, and I really don’t care.” Selene said.

“Well, her name is Lyra. She’s from the rogue lands, but she’s really strong and fast. She fights like she’s been trained all her life. I trained with her on Alpha’s watch yesterday,” Lucan said casually.

“So? Why do you guys care so much? So what if she’s strong and fast? If she’s taking Kael’s peace of mind, then she should be banished. We don’t need such wolves around,” Selene replied, her voice laced with frustration.

“‘Taking’ is a huge word, though. I think the Alpha sees something different. Don’t worry too much. After all, once he’s fine, you’d be the first to find out,” Lucan teased.

“Be serious, Lucan. This isn’t about that,” Selene replied, rolling her eyes.

“Don’t worry too much. Okay?” Lucan said as he motioned to Selene to sit with him.

Selene sat with Lucan, and he closed the space between them, allowing her rest her head on his broad shoulders.

Selene was a sweet wolf, but anything that seemed to bother her family or the Alpha a little, bothered her a lot.

“I don’t just like to see him like this,” Selene cooed.

“It’s okay. He’ll be fine in no time,” Lucan consoled.

Lucan and Selene are the most envied siblings in the whole pack. Their bond grew stronger after a brutal war that took their mum years ago.

Darian arrived swiftly at the Alpha’s chamber. He knocked rapidly and entered without hesitation, his worries controlled him. He was curious to know why the Alpha had walked out on the shadow warriors and why he still hadn’t lightened up even after Selene spoke to him.

“Alpha,” Darian called as he walked in.

Kael turned around to face Darian, still wearing a grim look. He was really bothered about this new recruit; her identity and purpose.

“What is the matter?” Darian asked. His voice calm and soothing.

“Darian, there’s something hidden about this new recruit. Apart from her exceptional skills, she fights like she’s driven by something deeper. I can see the fire in her eyes and soul. Believe me, I’ve watched her. She looks like she’s driven by something else besides loyalty to this pack,” he said, his voice laced with concern.

“Hmmm…that’s not really good for the safety of our pack. Why don’t you banish her?” Darian asked.

“That’s where the mystery lies. I don’t want to banish her. There’s a connection between us that I can’t fathom yet,” Kael said.

“So… do you love the new recruit?” Darian asked.

“No. This isn’t about love. Love is too fragile a word for this connection,” Kael replied.

“Hmmm. You know, I suggest we keep an eye on her.”

“You mean I should assign wolves to watch her?” Kael asked.

“No, you should watch her by yourself. Keep an eye on her. Be interested in her. The closer you get, the easier and faster you’d be able to figure who she is and why she’s here,” Darian suggested.

The advice felt right. It lifted the weight of frustration off his mind. Beta Darian knew the best ways to calm Alpha Kael down no matter the situation. He had been the only parent around for a while now, and he had trained Kael like his own son.

In the hallway outside the barracks Aria stood still, thinking about what had just happened with the Alpha. Her mind raced with curiosity.

“Why did he pull me out? Why is he insecure? Does he know me? Should I just leave? Who’s the white wolf and why the hell was she staring at me like bait?”

These questions played in her mind a million times. She ran her hands through her hair, bitting her lip in anxiety.

There were so many questions in her mind without answers. She didn’t know what to do, yet her stomach fluttered at the thought of Kael. His touch—his fingers tangled in hers, the hold was firm, almost brushing her skin off yet something about it made her chest flutter.

“Oh Aria, focus, not now. Yes he’s hot, but that is not why you’re here. This is not the time for weakness,” she told herself as memories of Kael washed off her mind.

Footsteps approached the hallway, Aria turned around to look — it was Kael.

“Lyra,” he called as he walked towards her. His voice calm.

She froze.

Selene flinched as her father’s hand slammed against the table for the third time in this young night. The sharp crack echoed through the chamber, the force rattling the items on the table. “Reckless!” Beta Darian’s voice thundered, sharp and cold. “You stained this family’s name with your foolishness.”Selene’s throat tightened. She opened her mouth, but Lucan shot her a look that warned her to stay silent.Darian’s eyes burned into her, every muscle of his face carved deep with fury. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done?”“I was only…” “Only what?” he barked the words so loud her chest jumped. “Only running into danger without second thought? Only dragging shame across the title of my house? You, Selene, my daughter, behaving like a spoiled pup who thinks the world bends to her obsession!”Her lips trembled. She pressed them together, holding back the sting in her eyes. She hated this, the sound of his rage, the weight of his disappointment. When she was little, she used to run

  • The Alpha’s Bane    Wanting Nemesis.

Aria paced the length of Kael’s chamber, her arms folded tight against her chest. She had eaten what the maid had brought earlier, though her stomach still twisted with unease. Her gaze drifted, almost unwillingly, to the window. She strolled there and rested her body on the window frame, allowing the wind wash over her. The night was heavy, the courtyard dim. Then a torch flickered. Aria stretched to look out the window. And there he was again. The same scarred man from silvermane. “Why does he keep coming back?” she asked, though there was no one to answer. Aria stood still, watching closely. Then she noticed a shadow was cast over him. Someone else was there, opposite him but she couldn’t see the other person. They seemed to be in an argument. The scarred man’s gestures were sharp, angry, his head snapping back as if refusing whatever the other had said.Aria leaned closer, her breath caught in her throat.“Whenever this man was here, it meant no good. And now he’s been frequ

The dining hall buzzed faintly with the sound of cutlery scraping against wooden plates. Wolves ate quickly and quietly. The smell of roasted meat, sweat and broth all mixed in the air. The Elites table was quiet too. Beta Darian and General Throne ate quietly. Lucan and Kael were absent. Laura leaned closer to Selene, her voice barely above a whisper. “Lucan has been acting strange. He hasn’t been himself since the training,” she said, her voice convincing. Selene arched a brow, smirking faintly as she cut through her meat. “Strange how? You’re imagining things, Laura.”Laura’s pressed her lips together, a flicker of worry darting through her eyes. “No, it’s more than that. He left abruptly during training this afternoon…”“I saw that,” Selene said before Laura could finish. “No, Sel. Lucan skipped dinner. That’s unlike him. And I haven’t seen him since he left in the afternoon,” Laura added quickly, her voice rising slowly. Beta Darian shot her a warning look from across the ta

  • The Alpha’s Bane    What He Wouldn’t Say.

Lucan quickened his steps, his boots hitting the stone hard floor with urgency.“Kael,” Lucan called. No response. Kael didn’t slow down, he hurried down the corridor straight towards his chamber. Before Lucan could call him again, Kael turned the corridor, his chamber doors looming ahead. Then the bell rang—a call to dinner. Lucan paused. Kael kept walking. As he approached the door, the guards moved aside. He stood for a moment at the door, breathing in and out deeply, trying to calm his rage. Then he pushed the door open. The room was empty except for Aria who lay asleep on the bed, the blankets halfway over her weak and pale body. He stepped in slowly and shut the door behind him with a soft, careful click. Kael walked further in until he was beside the bed. He adjusted the blankets gently and sat by her side. For a moment, he just watched her—the way her breathing was soft and even, her hair scattered against the soft pillow underneath her head. “It feels so good to wa

Lucan and Kael headed straight to the kitchen. The clang of pots and the hiss of hot kettles filled the air. The aroma of different delicacies hit them as they stepped into the kitchen. Two guards moved ahead of then, their deep voices echoing through the wide, noisy space.“The Alpha,” one announced, sharp and clear.Silence fell instantly.Every clang, every chop, every sizzling pan halted as the kitchen staff froze mid-motion. Heads bowed in unison. The only sound left was the faint crackle of the fire beneath the big pots. The head cook—a broad-shouldered, middle-aged woman with flour dusting her apron—stepped forward quickly, lowering her gaze. Her hands were clasped behind her back and her eyes stayed on the ground as she spoke. “My lord,” she murmured.Kael didn’t return the greeting. He moved further into the room, his presence pulling the weight of every eye toward him. Lucan walked beside him, his steps sharp and deliberate.Kael’s voice cut through the silence, deep and f

  • The Alpha’s Bane    Cracks In Stones.

The training hall buzzed with wolves. The sound of blows hitting hard and swords clashing filled the room. The air was covered with smoke and the smell of sweat, the floor littered with wolf tufts. They had been trying for hours. Lucan sat on a bench with Laura and Selene at a corner in the hall. They had just finished a combat training and were now drinking from their water skins. Then Lucan stood abruptly. “Where are you going?” Laura asked, her eyes looking up at him. “I’ll be back soon,” Lucan replied, planting both hands in his pockets. “Do you want me to come?” Laura asked, searching his eyes. “Urgh,” Selene scoffed, rolling her eyes. “He’s not a kid, Laura, he’ll be fine.” Laura shot her a Look. “I’ll be fine, baby,” Lucan said. He bent low and pressed a soft kiss on her forehead. Then he turned and walked out of the hall. *************************“She should be fine in the next few days,” the healer said after examining Aria for the fifth time. Aria sat
