Lloyd’s POV

I got out of bed. There was no point lying here when sleep wasn’t going to come to me.

Exiting the bedroom, I made a beeline down the hallway for my study. The door creaked slightly as I pushed it open, hoping I didn’t wake anyone.

On my desk still lay Elora’s note. I rounded the desk and sat, my eye grazing over the note once more.

‘I have no faith in them.’

I leaned back in the desk chair, rocking it gently. Something is definitely off about the last hearing at the High Council.

First, it seemed like the questions were rehearsed.

I replayed the hearing in my head and then it suddenly occured to me. All the questions came from councillor Gaius.

And Gaius was a good friend of Darius. The only one who seemed different in a way was councillor Epaphras.

Could it mean that the idea of arresting Elora was planned from the beginning?

One thing is certain; these men know something, and whatever they know involves them and Elora.

And they think that by silencing Elora, they c

Elora’s POVAt the entrance of the labyrinth, Lloyd paused and looked back at the three of us. Xavier, Ragnar and I stared back at him, waiting for his next line of action.I had deduced from the council that he didn’t want to go into the labyrinth. He was afraid, but he didn’t show it.Xavier and Ragnar on the other hand, were not so successful in hiding their fears. I on the other hand, wasn’t feeling too confident, but I knew what had to be done had to be done. If push comes to shove, I might be forced to use magic. It would mean revealing it to Lloyd, but it’s not exactly sorcery. It’s true that I’m still trying to discover who I am and what this magic means for me, but in the meantime, if it means using it to save my friends, I won’t hesitate to use it.Lloyd’s look lingered on me a moment too long, and I nodded. Without another word, he turned to a stone on the wall and pushed it in.The gates slid up, revealing a dark abyss, lit by lamps. Lloyd led the way. I breezed past Rag

Lloyd’s POVAfter I dismissed the last guard, Ragnar came and sat down. I turned to him. “I strongly believe that we might be looking in the wrong direction.”The candle light in the dark room danced slightly, our shadow swirling gently on the wall. The air smelled of dew and dust.“In the wrong direction?” Ragnar blinked and I nodded.“All these while, we’ve been thinking a werewolf did the kill.” I continued. “What if it was done by another being?”“Are you implying a witch did it?” I shook my head. “That’s very unlikely, unless we have a traveler witch around. Those ones have no issue shedding blood, if anything, to fuel their dark magic. But if a traveler was around, I would have detected their energy.”“So, what are you saying, essentially?”“It could be a being other than a witch or a werewolf,” I said. “I’m suspecting a shadow. And I suspect that they came through the labyrinth.”“Are you saying we should scout the labyrinth?” He asked, voice soft.I pursed my lips. “It’s look

Elora’s POVAs Lloyd left, Xavier instructed a few betas to get me a seat. In seconds, I was seated with Xavier by my side. As the beta left to bring in the first guard, I craned my neck to look at him.“Wouldn’t you sit?” I asked.“It wouldn’t make sense if I sit,” he replied, his voice croaked. “I’ll prefer to stand. It’ll accord more honour to you.”“More honour?” My voice rose a little. “I can handle my own.”“With your recent histories?” He chuckled. “I doubt the guards would respond. Unless you want to use sorcery.”“Sorcery?” I blinked.“Yes,” he replied. “History has it that some council members in the past use sorcery to command people to speak to them at hearings.”“So, you think I could use sorcery?” My heart skipped a beat.He chuckled again. “I only said that as a joke. I didn’t mean for you to take it so seriously.”I wanted to lash out, to complain that he almost had me fooled, but the entrance of the first guard shut me up. Thinking and pondering about it, I realized

Lloyd’s POV“In this case, Elora,” I started. “To cover more grounds, we’ll have to interview these people separately. We were standing in the council building now, scarce of people. Only a few guards paced around, and a few betas that had come around to join us the moment they noticed we didn’t return.Elora looked around the council building for a moment before meeting my gaze. “I was thinking you’d organize a hearing for every guard present at the time of the incident.”I blinked. “A hearing?” “Yes, a hearing,” I repeated. “Perhaps, the men will be more susceptible to speaking the truth when they are aware that it’s a hearing and not just an interview.”“That is going to kill time,” I said. “We need a quick method that will enable us find the killer before they clean up their mess. Are you up for the task?”I asked her that last question for a reason. As alpha, I’ll have no problem demanding answers from people I question, but I doubt that would be the same for her.She began a a

Elora’s POV“That’s impossible,” I cried. “How would he be dead? Who would kill him in imprison?”“Do not speak like a dunce,” Xavier said. “You know how badly people don’t want the truth out. You know how they’ll fight to keep their secrets. This just confirms our suspicions of someone in the council being involved.”“What do we—” I didn’t finish that statement.Lloyd dashed outside, walking briskly. At first, Xavier and I were stunned at the sudden action before we scrambled to follow.“Where are you even going to?” I asked when Xavier and I managed to catch up to him.“To find out the cause of this mess,” he replied, not sparing me a glance.“You don’t actually believe they’ll be moved to speak to you about Leone’s death, do you?” I asked. He didn’t answer.“And you don’t actually imagine them letting you through into the cells?” I asked again. He hesitated, but answered. “I’m the Alpha. I can enter anywhere I want.”“I know that,” I said. “And I’m sure the rest of the people know

Lloyd’s POV “What did you just say?” I breathed, rooted where I stood. Slowly, she walked back to me. “I said I continued with the investigation lightly. I thought—”“You were not supposed to continue with anything lightly,” he said in a low growl. She shot me wide eyes. “I don’t understand. I noticed something wasn’t right, and I decided to look into it.” “You were not supposed to look into that,” I growled again. “You don’t know the pact I was made to swear to take you under my wing. The things we are dealing with are dangerous.”She blinked at me. “So, you think I cannot handle myself?”“I think you should know things to dabble into alone and the things you should inform me about before dabble into it.” I said. While she was still in her baffled state, I grabbed her wrist, making sure it wasn’t too tight. In a blur, we dashed into a corner.“You shouldn’t have done that,” I warned. “You should have informed me before leaving.”“Like I said, it was a light investigation,” she pr
