Chapter 6

The Veilrend Pack

(Renrik’s POV)

The wound behind my shoulder was deeper than I thought. The silver had poisoned my skin, resisting my natural healing. The burned flesh stung as I slowly made my way back to my pack, replaying the fight over and over in my head, trying to pinpoint where I had fucked up.

I should never have given the demon the opportunity to get to Seraphine. If I had been quicker, stronger, I could have smashed the bastard’s head in before he thought about using her as a hostage.

He surprised me with how slippery he was. He moved like a snake, with elegant twists and rapid maneuvers. He should have had some demonic powers, but aside from summoning that blasted silver knife, I didn’t see anything that he was truly capable of. I should have been able to kill him for underestimating me… but instead, I let him escape with my Luna.

And he wasn’t an idiot. He knows better than to make the same mistake twice. I have to prepare for the next time we face off, because I knew he’d be doing the same.

The ancient stone wall enclosing my little village came into view. It was strictly Werewolf territory. No demons. No humans. No fairies, or witches, or vampires, or whatever the fuck else might lurk beyond our borders. Just werewolves. We were fortunate enough to have protection etched into the wall to shield us from unwanted visitors.

That thin veil of enchantment earned us our pack name; The Veilrend.

Sat on the wall was a figure with a mess of brown curls. Bright, orange eyes fixed on me and I could finally make out the familiar, welcome face of my second in command. My Beta, Kenton Shadowclaw.

“The love-struck knight returns!” Kenton announced before leaping from his perch. Even in his humanoid form, he was agile and dexterous.

His friendly smile faltered when he saw my slumping posture. I was dragging myself up the hill to him; not only because my body was injured, but because my pride was limping home, too. When I made it to my friend, I shifted into my human persona.

Kenton was six-foot-one. I was much taller. He had a slender body, reminiscent of an athlete. I was bulkier; more muscle and more command to my presence. We both had our strengths and weaknesses, and because of them, we complimented each other perfectly.

“You look rough, buddy,” Kenton noted, giving me a half-smile.

“Still better looking than you,” I growled back.

Kenton scoffed. “You wish,” he said, flicking his brown curls out of his pretty-boy face. “But seriously, your shoulder looks screwed up. C’mon, let's sort you out.”

He turned to lead the way into Veilrend, but I gripped his shoulder and stopped him in his tracks. “Kent,”

“Ren?”

“I fucked up.”

Kenton didn’t reply straight away. He picked his words carefully, always diplomatic and thoughtful. One of his strengths. One of my weaknesses.

“Look,” he breathed. “I have a shit-ton of questions, but they can wait until you’ve seen a doctor. Obviously, something went wrong. You reek of, like, rotten eggs or something, but there’s no point in us talking while you’re angry and sulking and bleeding. Let’s go.”

“We should go round the back so no-one sees that I’m injured,” I suggested.

Kenton rolled his eyes. “Now’s not the time to be worrying about your ‘tough-guy’ image,”

“Kent,” I barked, not in the mood for his jokes. “You know why they shouldn’t see me like this.” I was the status symbol for the pack. An unrelenting force that no other wolf in Veilrend had managed to even scratch. For them to see a deep gash in my shoulder…

“Right,” Kenton’s frown deepened. “We don’t want the others to panic.”

~*~*~

“That should do for now,” Doctor Nyxson packed away most of her equipment, bar a small bottle.

I gave the gauze on my shoulder a onceover. Happy with her work, I went ahead and pulled a fresh, black t-shirt over my chest, courtesy of my brother, Roderick.

“I’ll change the bandage in two days if it hasn’t healed by then, but if it starts to bleed or ooze, let me know and I’ll change it sooner.”

“Thanks, Doctor Nyxson,” I gave her a weak smile, but my kindness was met with a glare from her.

“Just call me ‘Yvonne’, Renrik. I’m going to be your sister-in-law in three months. You don’t have to be so formal with me.”

“You’re on the clock,” I muttered lazily.

“If I was, we’d be in my clinic right now. Not in your bloody guestroom. Call me ‘Yvonne’.”

“You’re in my guestroom for the sake of patient confidentiality, Doctor Nyxson. I had to pick someone I could trust, and who better than my brother’s, beautiful, bride-to-be?” It wasn’t that I disliked Yvonne, I thought she was a great fit for Roderick. However, she pushed my buttons. She was a bit too comfortable in a position of power, probably thinking that while I remained unbonded, she needed to step up as a temporary Luna.

Yvonne didn’t reply. She picked up the bottle she'd left out. Her dark-green eyes brimmed with stern warning as she looked at me. “This is to be taken twice a day. Once in the morning and once before bed. Don’t skip it. It's to make sure there are no lasting effects of the silver in your blood.” Out came that motherly tone of hers, despite being a year younger than me. Although she did look older than twenty-two.

I took the bottle with a curt nod. “Understood. Thanks. Send my brother and Kenton in on your way out, would you?”

“Of course, Alpha Duskborne,” she mocked me. A little payback for refusing to call her Yvonne while she treated me, but I let it slide. I wasn't in the mood to chastise her, and it would only result in an argument between me and my brother.

I saw her kiss Roderick in the doorway as she left. Her cropped, purple hair was a nice match against his onyx locks, much like my own.

It got me thinking about Seraphine. Her hair was almost white, kissed by the Moon Goddess herself. Seraphine was smaller than Yvonne, almost fragile-looking. A part of me worried that I’d shatter Seraphine if I mated with her.

I closed my eyes and recalled her scent. It was a powerful, intoxicating aroma. A dash of vanilla that drowned out even the revolting stink of the demon. I wanted so desperately to hold her against me, to feel that soft, pale skin against my sour scars.

I wanted to protect her. Even if she rejected me in the end or ran away; I needed to set her free…

“Take care, my Moonbeam,” Roderick whispered to his fiancée, and I spotted Kenton gagging animatedly in the background.

Yvonne shoved past Beta Kenton and grumbled at him, “You’re such a child.”

I waited until the door was shut and I could hear her footsteps fade away down the hall. The Beta and Gamma wolves turned to me with grave expressions. Kenton and Roderick wanted answers and I wasn’t going to keep secrets from either of them.

“You fought a demon, didn’t you?” Roderick got straight to the point, taking off his glasses to clean the lens on his crisp, white shirt. “The stench is all over you.”

“Is that what it is?” Kenton’s eyes widened. “The rotten egg smell? It’s what demons smell like?”

“Sulfur,” I explained. “It’s similar to a rotten smell, yeah. And yes, Roderick. I encountered a demon.”

The glasses were back on his nose, slightly magnifying those narrow, innocent, blue eyes of his. Roderick was someone else I wanted to protect. My delicate little brother, with such a slender frame and a slight limp he’d been born with.

But there was a bark to his voice; a commanding strength to it that I all too often forgot existed. He locked eyes with me and asked in that very tone,

“Was it the one who killed Dad?”

  • Luna in Hell   Ch. 32 Fiery Temper

Chapter 32Fiery Temper(Diana’s POV) It was Hell in Hell. Seraphine’s absence and the leash on Valefar had my master in a rotten mood. I had seen him grab numerous imps by the face and squeezed until their heads imploded, simply because they were the nearest thing to him when someone had pissed him off. I laid low. Not just because he was in a dangerous mood, but because I was still stinging from the night we shared together. The night I had gotten drunk off of lust and fantasies. The night he had officially rejected me and kicked me into the corridor butt-naked. It hurt on so many levels. I didn’t even know where to begin with healing. I still loved him. He was my demonic Alpha and despite Valefar making it very clear that I was nothing more than a guinea pig to him, I was still ready and willing to let him conduct any vicious experiment he wanted on me. So long as it resulted in me being held in his arms or feeling the blazing heat of his skin against my own. Goddess, it’s so

  • Luna in Hell   Ch. 31 Heat

Chapter 31Heat(Seraphine’s POV)His lips were delicate. With how large and bulging Renrik’s muscles were, I assumed his touch would be rough and unforgiving. Instead, the kiss felt like a butterfly had landed on my lips, curiously searching for nectar. Oh, how I wanted to give him my nectar. I kissed back.I was inexperienced and nervous, but I surprised myself with how hungry I was for that moment. I went onto the tips of my toes and pressed myself against him. I didn’t care that he was dripping wet and soaking my clothes. I desperately needed to feel the shape of his body against mine. My fingers tangled themselves within his dark hair, while my other hand stroked the back of his neck. I relished the fact my touch gave him goosebumps.Suddenly I was engulfed. He pulled me into a fierce embrace, more in line with what I had expected from an Alpha. Possessive. Protective. His body was rock-hard and I could feel something harder squashed against my stomach. It must have been his

  • Luna in Hell   Ch. 30 Washed Up

Chapter 30Washed Up(Renrik’s POV)I was supposed to be preparing my big speech to rally the troops, but I had put my shower off for far too long. Cleansing the stench of Hell from my skin seemed like a far better use of my time than locking myself in my bedroom and scribbling nonsense on post-it notes. No-one would have described me as the charismatic type, and my brother definitely wouldn’t have called me a planner. As much as I wanted to write some inspiring speech, it wasn’t who I was and I would just end up throwing any predetermined script out of the window anyway. I didn’t bother telling any of the domestic staff I was showering, because I was capable of grabbing my own fucking towels and soap. I didn’t enjoy having maids, but it was supposed to be an honour to serve the Alpha and his bloodline. To strip them of that honour was worse than firing or not hiring them at all. In the end, I let Roderick deal with the comings and goings of the staff.Steam swiftly filled the bath

  • Luna in Hell   Ch. 29 Family

Chapter 29Family(Seraphine’s POV)I picked a pair of black pants and a neat, cream blouse. They both fit me quite well and I thought I looked rather pretty in the combination, but Yvonne pouted when I stepped out of the bathroom wearing them.“I’m too fat for that outfit now,” she huffed, gathering and folding the unpicked clothes. After words like that, my eyes were immediately drawn to her body. She didn’t look much bigger than me, but there was definitely one clear difference. “You’ve just got bigger boobs,” I pointed out.She glanced down at her chest and readjusted how her girls sat in her bar. “And a bigger ass, but that’s because I eat too much cheese.” I giggled. For a second, it felt like I was back with Amber and Diana (back before Diana became a dedicated disciple of Valefar). On top of that, despite knowing Yvonne for only an hour, I had this inexplicable urge to call her my sister. There was a strong tug on my heart, guiding me towards her. It was nothing like the co

  • Luna in Hell   Ch. 28 The Alpha?

Chapter 28The Alpha?(Renrik’s POV)I didn’t want to let Seraphine out of my sight, but I was too tired to battle Yvonne for custody of her. Besides, I didn’t want to be seen as one of those controlling men whose Luna daren’t breathe without his permission. It was important for Seraphine to get a medical checkup. Goddess knows if she’d ever been seen by a real fucking physician before. And having another female around her, one we could actually trust, who wasn’t some wretched succubus, would probably give Seraphine space to express and explore her emotions. I had tried hard to be open and lend her a listening ear, but I know I’m shit at it. Finding the scarce right words to say to a woman, when there’s millions of wrong ones; it’s an impossible task. Even the Alpha of all Alphas would struggle to answer a woman correctly. Thoughts of Seraphine reluctantly faded into the back of my mind as I marched through the village towards the Duskborne home.Whenever I left the pack on busines

  • Luna in Hell   Ch. 27 Welcome to Veilrend

Chapter 27Welcome to Veilrend(Seraphine POV) Finally… FINALLY I got to see a real pack. I expected Veilrend to have a white, veil-like dome draped over it, but it didn’t. The place looked like an old village with an ancient stone wall framing its borders. I admit, I was a little disappointed to find out the protective barrier was invisible. “Ah, home sweet home,” Kenton beamed. “After you, Seraphine.” Renrik gestured to the main entrance into town. “A real pack. A real community with just wolves.” My voice trembled and my legs were frozen. I didn’t know what to expect and I never dreamed I’d set foot in another pack. Especially one neighbouring the graveyard of my own origins. I nervously glanced at Renrik. “I… I don’t know what to do. What’s the etiquette?” “I’ll introduce you,” he assured me, as he bowed his head in greeting to the man and woman approaching us. “My brother and his fiancée are coming, so let’s go.” With one deep breath, I stepped into Veilrend. Again, I was

  • Luna in Hell   Jess

Chapter 20 Jess(Renrik’s POV)Before I met Seraphine, I would have said Jess was my type of woman. Gorgeous curves I could grab onto and an innocent face that I’d absolutely ruin with cum. Now she just looked plain to me, but the bruise around her eye made me livid. It made me want to protect her,

  • Luna in Hell   Reject

Chapter 19 Reject (Seraphine’s POV)As we travelled in our strange little pack, I learned why Kenton kept quiet as his wolf. Humans as a species didn’t accept werewolves. Outing what we were could have turned Jess against us very quickly and it would have been harder to earn her trust and for us t

  • Luna in Hell   Woman of the forest

Chapter 18Woman of the forest (Seraphine’s POV) Kenton led the way while remaining in his wolf form. Renrik walked behind me in his human form, leaving a fair distance between us. I could feel his one good eye on me. Watching me as though I was a prisoner about to make a break for it. On top of

  • Luna in Hell   Like father, like son

Chapter 17Like father, like son(Seraphine’s POV)Once Renrik left, I collapsed beside the fire. I knew Alphas held an immeasurable amount of power and had a natural aura of dominance, but feeling it for myself was surreal. There were no Alphas in Hell. Valefar killed them all or simply didn’t capt
