Chapter 9 > Gunshots rang out a mile away

She heard his jerks, his gasps, his teeth grinding, his nails rubbing against the metal of his weapon.  Then he moved further away from her position where she was curled up, trying to preserve the energy and warmth of her body, trying to make herself smaller and unnoticeable.

Dustin's pack members continued the call, calling Asta's name as they continued searching for her.  She frowned.  How did they not know her name?  Asta must have kept her family a secret so the Black's wouldn't know she already had a wolf pack and a mate.

The shooter moved further away from her position which caught her attention and brought her back from her thought, , but he was still too close.

The wind suddenly changed direction, and Dustin's brother Lucas called out:

   "This way!"

She watched for them and almost stopped breathing in anticipation, not to mention the pain had become so intense she could barely concentrate.

But her rescuers never came.
