I jerked away from Dominic, and at the same time, my heart slammed against my ribs as my fingers flew to the ruby pendant. I was so scared, my pulse screamed in my ears, drowning out the sudden silence.

Dominic stared at me, his brow furrowed, and his mouth parted in shock. I could see it; the flicker of confusion quickly replaced by concern.

He took a step back with his hands raised like I was a cornered animal. “Evangeline…” His voice had dropped an octave. “What just happened?”

“Think.” My mind spun. “Say something, anything!”

“I’m sorry,” I blurted out, “I didn’t mean to react like that.” I said, looking away and blinking hard to keep my expression soft. “It’s just… this necklace was a gift from my father. He gave it to me just before he—” My voice cracked, and I stopped, hoping he would buy it.

Dominic’s shoulders dropped, and his gaze softened; his stormy gray eyes were now clouded with guilt. “I had no idea.”

“It’s fine,” I murmured, offering him a weak smile. “But if i

{Dominic}I pushed open the old wooden door, and it creaked terribly, easily alerting Allen of my arrival. The moment I stepped through the heavy doors, the smell of burnt herbs hit me square in the face. “He really needed to crack a window in here.”“Knock next time,” he muttered, voice low.I ignored him and stepped inside. “Didn’t know I needed permission to check on a threat to the pack.”He put the quill down, stretched his long fingers, and leaned back in his chair. “We have a problem,” he said plainly.“You don’t say.”He pushed up from his seat and crossed the room, waving for me to follow. “Your men have been bringing in more bodies. At first, it was the usual corpses as always, but now…”Allen threw back a thick tarp covering a slab in the corner, revealing three bodies, each more grotesque than the last. The first looked half-rotted, the second was slightly more intact, with black veins webbing like a parasite beneath the surface. But the third made my eyes narrow; Its sk

{Lyra}The morning sunlight streamed through the sheer curtains, and a soft breeze slipped through the slightly parted balcony doors, fluttering the curtains.Dominic had left before breakfast; he said something about a strategy meeting with a wizard, but I was too sleepy at the time to really understand what he said. When I finally mustered up the strength to wake up, I sat cross-legged on the cushioned balcony bench, sipping my tea in a floral teacup that was between my palms. Mirabel sat across from me with a tray of tiny lemon tarts and a fashion magazine in hand, humming as she flipped the pages.“This rose tea is divine,” I sighed, taking another sip. “Remind me to bribe the kitchen staff into giving me their secret.”Mirabel grinned, setting down her magazine. “I’ll certainly do my best, but I doubt they would want to reveal the one thing that’s still keeping them in a job.”I snorted delicately, then turned toward the sound of a buzz that came from inside the bedroom. Mirabe

{Dominic}The waltz was nearing its end, and yet everyone around me was lost in the music, but then I saw her smile fall, and my eyes narrowed. The man in the gold and black mask was obviously not just another guest. A mere guest wouldn’t have Evangeline trembling like that.“Excuse me,” I said to my current dance partner, whose hand was resting just a bit too comfortably on my shoulder. Her expression fell immediately. “Already? But we’ve barely—”“I’m sorry,” I cut in, trying not to be rude. “Duty calls.”I stepped around her and made a direct line through the crowd toward Evangeline, but the crowd wasn’t kind tonight. Every few steps I took, I would encounter another lady who would block my path with a hopeful smile and an outstretched hand.“Just one dance, Alpha.”“I’d be honored...”“Surely you’ve got time for a little spin…”I offered them all the same apologetic smile as I rejected them all. “Maybe next time.” I had only one destination tonight, and it sure as hell wasn’t any

{Lyra}Dominic’s arm had gone stiff beneath my fingers the moment Corvin refused to bow. I could feel his pulse skyrocket, and it didn’t take much to realize what he wanted. He honestly looked like he wanted to lunge at Corvin and rip him in half, but we both knew he couldn’t, at least not here, in front of all these people with their velvet cloaks and hungry eyes, just waiting for the Bloodhounds to fall apart. All it would take was one slip-up, and soon enough, they would pick at us like wolves at a carcass. So I decided to do what Dominic couldn’t, and let go of his arm.He glanced at me for a fraction of a second as I stepped forward, eyes focused on Corvin.I walked right up to him, unbothered by the stares or the faint whispers, and I watched as his hands clenched around his whiskey glass.“Well,” I said, my voice smooth and light, so it irked him even more, “You don’t look thrilled to see me, Corvin.”His lip twitched. “Forgive me, I was just surprised.”“Is that what you’re c

  • The Alpha's Fated Desire   CHAPTER EIGHTY-THREE

{Dominic}It had only been a few days since Evangeline came back into my life, and already I was counting them like precious stones in a vault. I guess a part of me feared that the universe might snatch her back if I wasn’t careful. The gala had started as a simple idea. A whisper of celebration. Just a simple night to commemorate Evangeline’s return, but it had now become probably one of the most talked-about events here in Crownshaven. But I didn’t care, I was going to give her back her crown, whether she wanted it or not. The old Evangeline would’ve hated the spectacle. She would’ve probably begged me to call it off and release a press statement instead, but she had changed, considerably so. And I knew, deep down, that she wanted the world to see her, and to know she had survived everything they said she wouldn’t.I hadn’t been to a gala since the one where I first laid eyes on her. And yet, here I was again, in an expensive black jacket, wearing diamond cufflinks while my heart t

  • The Alpha's Fated Desire   CHAPTER EIGHTY-TWO

{Dominic}The laughter had started to dim, but the stars were out in full force, and for once.Reina and Ryker were the last to leave. He had muttered something about needing to be up early and walked out the door with his mate. Odessa and Isaac had left even earlier. Apparently, they had finally gotten bored with the grown-up talk and decided to head back into the house. We were the last ones left in the gazebo, and Evangeline was sitting beside me, wine glass in hand, head tilted toward the sky. The fairy lights made her skin glow like honey, and her eyes were slightly closed in satisfaction. She looked like she had been sculpted out of that night sky. “I remember when I first saw you on the yacht just staring at the sky,” she murmured, her gaze flickering to me, before going back up. “I never expected you’d take a liking to it,” I chuckled, glancing up as well. “It’s really beautiful, though, isn’t it?”“Yeah,” she said in a whisper, “It really is.”My fingers itched to reach for

{Lyra}It was strange how my heart fluttered over something as simple as a “surprise.”Dominic didn’t give me much to work with, just that boyish smirk and that annoying, delicious mystery in his eyes. Honestly, I was too curious for my own good. What could he possibly pull off in just an hour? Then again… he was Dominic Bloodhound. That man could probably turn a field of weeds into a rose garden if he snapped hard enough.Isaac still hadn’t returned from wherever it was Regina had decided to take him and Odessa to, and so I had no one to talk my nerves out with. I headed back to the room alone, and as I turned the corner toward my door, I nearly bumped into Mirabel. She was humming, carrying what looked like folded towels, and her usual cheerful smile was plastered on her face.“Mirabel!” I called out, stopping her.She whirled around, and her eyes lit up. “My lady!” she gasped a little too excitedly, “Do you need anything?” I offered her a sheepish smile. “Actually, I was wondering

{Dominic}I was already halfway down the hall with the tub of Rocky Road ice cream in my hand when I nearly collided with Mirabel as she exited my bedroom with her usual dramatic flair. She jumped slightly, then dipped into a bow with such speed I thought she might fold herself in half.“My lord,” she greeted breathlessly. “I’ve drawn your lady a bath and was just heading to inform the spa staff to prepare for her arrival.”I looked down at her, then glanced down at the melting tub of Rocky Road. For a moment, I imagined myself walking in there, handing her the ice cream, sitting beside her while she soaked in what I could only guess would be cucumber-scented bubbles, but something told me to let her breathe, she had been through so much already, she deserved to relax.“Good job,” I said instead, steadying my voice. “Take care of her, Mirabel. When she’s finished, let her know I’ll be in my study.”Mirabel gave a bright nod, but before she scurried off, I held out the tub. “And make s

{Lyra}I never thought I’d have to lie to him like this, but I couldn’t dare speak the truth. Dominic sat across from me on the couch, watching me like a hawk stalking its prey.I folded my hands tightly in my lap and forced myself to meet his gaze. “During the Trial of the Moon, something strange happened.”He leaned forward slightly, focusing solely on me.“The moment I stepped into the Sacred Grove, I felt a strong pull.” I paused, trying to find the right words. “Then the Moon Spirit appeared, and she took me away.”Dominic’s brows furrowed, his lips parting as if he wanted to ask something, but he let me continue.“She led me deeper into the woods. Far beyond where I thought the Grove ended. Then she simply told me to find my way back.”“She just left you?” Dominic asked gently.“Just like that,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. “I don’t think I’ve ever felt as alone as I did.”The memory of trees so dark and twisted they looked like they were carved from shadow still mad
