The moon had slipped low, its pale silver casting long shadows through Draven’s chambers. The light splintered over the dark walls, over the bed where he had once taken countless lovers. Tonight, however, there was no peace in the familiar warmth.

Lydia moved silently, like a predator who had known his habits for years. She wore dark silk, clinging to her curves as if it were part of her skin. Her perfume was sharp and sweet, designed to stir desire, and it did—at first. Draven’s wolf growled low, restless, demanding release, and he let her close.

“You dismissed them all,” she whispered, sliding her body against his as if claiming territory. “But you can’t hide from me.”

Draven’s hands caught her hips instinctively. The feel of her against him—soft, warm, familiar—was almost comforting. Her lips found his neck, pressing hot, wet kisses against his pulse point. The scent of her hair, the heat of her body, the slow slide of her hands against him—it should have been enough to ignite the old hunger. And for a moment, it was.

He groaned, pressing his body to hers, letting her climb into his lap. Her silk skirt rode high, revealing the curve of her thighs. His hands roamed, memorizing the places he had always known, the places that had brought him relief countless nights before.

Her lips found his mouth, wet, insistent, desperate. He kissed back, letting himself forget… until her taste twisted on his tongue.

It wasn’t her.

Every thrust of memory, every moan she drew from him, was hollow. His wolf snarled, restless, desperate, tugging at the edges of his mind. He tried harder, driving into her with more force, pressing, claiming, but the fire he sought—Aria’s fire—was absent.

Lydia gasped, arching her back against him, her hands digging into his shoulders as she pressed closer. “Yes,” she whispered, her voice soft and triumphant. “That’s it, Alpha. That’s the man I know.”

Draven’s hands clenched her hips, digging harder, his body working, sweat glistening on his skin. His wolf howled inside him, and he closed his eyes, imagining her beneath him—but it wasn’t Lydia who appeared.

Aria.

Her dark eyes, defiant. Her lips, trembling yet daring. Her scent, wild and intoxicating, burned through the haze of Lydia’s perfume, igniting a need he could not satisfy with the courtesan.

Every thrust, every motion, every kiss on Lydia’s trembling lips became a reminder of what he truly desired—and what he could not have. His hands slid down her back, gripping her tighter as he tried to force his desire into being, but it only made the ache inside him grow.

Lydia whimpered, feeling his frustration, mistaking it for lust growing sharper. “You feel it too,” she murmured against his neck, pressing her body harder. “You want me, Alpha. Don’t lie.”

He pulled her down onto the bed, taking her mouth again, biting, tasting, claiming—but with each movement, the hollowness spread. He could taste desire, but it was hollow, lacking fire, lacking soul.

His wolf bared its teeth inside him, howling, clawing, tearing at the cage of flesh and reason. And then he saw her—Aria—in his mind’s eye, flames licking her skin, her breath hot, her lips daring him to cross the line.

The realization struck him like ice in molten blood.

This is not what I want. I don’t want her.

Draven’s movements faltered. His grip loosened. Lydia gasped in surprise, but before she could speak, he drew back entirely, leaving her against the sheets, her silk twisted, her chest heaving.

“What…?” she began, confusion and shock dancing in her eyes.

Draven stood, hands trembling slightly as he pulled his shirt straight.

“I—” he growled low, a sound part frustration, part rage. “I don’t want this. Not with you.”

Her face fell, shock turning to betrayal, then fury.

“You’ve gone soft?” she hissed, leaning up on her elbows, the firelight turning her skin golden. “You think you can deny me after everything?”

Draven’s eyes were molten gold, predatory, dangerous.

“It’s not you,” he said, his voice low and ragged. “It’s her. Only her.”

Lydia’s mouth opened in disbelief, a bitter laugh escaping.

“Who is this girl?”

Draven’s jaw clenched. His body still thrummed with unspent desire, his wolf snarling, wild and untamed.

“She is… fire.”

His voice broke slightly.

“And I crave it. Not yours. Not anyone’s. Only hers.”

Her lips trembled, a mixture of anger and heartbreak twisting them.

“I’ll let you be,” she said, her voice sharp and low.

Draven didn’t answer.

He turned toward the window, toward the forest beyond the packhouse, toward the moon that had witnessed so many of his battles, both carnal and cruel. His chest heaved with exertion, sweat gleaming on his skin, every muscle screaming with frustration. He had given himself to her, tried to find solace in her touch, only to discover how hollow it was.

And that, more than anything, terrified him.

He strode out of the room without another word, the silk and scent of Lydia clinging faintly to his skin, a bitter reminder of what he didn’t want. She reached for him, her fingers trembling, but he didn’t look back.

Behind him, in the chamber, Lydia collapsed onto the bed, silk tangled around her legs, eyes wide, her heart hammering.

She understood, finally, that her place in Draven’s world was slipping away.

He had given in—momentarily—but his taste had changed.

His heart.

His desire.

His very being.

They belonged to another.

And with them…

Her place as Luna.

That knowledge burned hotter than any rejection.

For several long minutes, she remained perfectly still.

Then slowly…

She stood.

Her trembling hands gathered the dark silk robe lying at the foot of the bed. She dressed quickly before facing the mirror.

“No…”

she whispered to her own reflection.

“I won’t lose to some hybrid girl.”

She wiped the tears from beneath her eyes.

By the time she stepped into the corridor, the weakness on her face had disappeared.

Only determination remained.

The halls of the packhouse were silent.

Moonlight spilled across the stone floor.

Lydia walked without haste, appearing no different from anyone returning to her chambers after another ordinary night.

Halfway down the corridor…

She stopped.

Her eyes swept left.

Then right.

No guards.

No servants.

No one watching.

A faint smile curved across her lips.

She turned away from the route leading to her room.

Instead…

She disappeared into another corridor.

One that led toward only one door.

Kelvin’s.

No magical barrier.” He hesitated. “But the moment we crossed the boundary…
