(Calla’s POV)

I sat by the window with a blanket over my lap and a thousand thoughts crawling under my skin and swirling around my mind like an insistent housefly.

The outside world, I could see it from my window. The forest stretched like it has no end and its deep green color was veiled in the early morning mist. It looked the same way it did years ago—unchanged, eternal. Just like this pack. Just like the lies it kept breathing.

Asher was curled up on the rug with his toy wolf, babbling to himself in soft hums, like his world had shrunk to just this room, this safety, this temporary peace.

But I knew better.

I knew peace had teeth.

And it never lasted long.

I gripped the edge of the teacup in my hands, watching the steam curl up like ghosts of decisions not yet made.

Rowan said I could use his healer.

He said he’d help.

And I wanted to believe him. I needed to believe him. Because Asher… Asher was fading again. Slowly. Quietly. In the way only a mother would notice. A little more f

(Rowan’s POV)The door clicked softly behind me.I didn’t look back.I couldn’t.Not when the image of Asher’s pale cheeks and too-tired eyes still weighed on my chest like an anchor. And Calla—gods, Calla—with her guarded fire and trembling control, trying so damn hard not to fall apart in front of me.The moment I left their room, everything felt louder. The echo of my footsteps down the marble corridor. The humming of the old wall sconces. The quiet murmur of servants shifting from room to room like shadows on a loop. It all grated.I rubbed the back of my neck as I walked.I should’ve insisted harder. Told her to let my healer in. Demanded it, even. But something about her hesitation had stopped me cold. There was fear behind her eyes. Not the kind that screamed for help—no, it was subtler than that. A fear buried beneath years of being forced to survive alone. One that told me if I pushed too far, she’d vanish before I could blink. And I wasn’t ready to let her vanish. Not again.

(Calla’s POV)All I heard was was a light knock on the door and then it wa s followed by the faintest creak as the door opened and closed. He didn’t wait for me to answer.Of course he didn’t.Rowan moved like he belonged wherever he stepped. And here, in this room, it was no different. His scent entered first—earthy, storm-soaked, with an edge of something untamed underneath. The kind of scent that never really left after you’d tasted it once. The kind of scent that made the walls feel smaller. He wore a dark knit sweater today. Fitted. Casual, but not soft. His eyes landed on Asher almost instantly, and everything else fell away.“You’re up early, champ,” he said with a half-grin, crouching beside him.Asher lit up like dawn had just broken inside his chest. “I was waiting for you!”“Waiting for me?” Rowan raised an eyebrow. “What if I never showed?”Asher shrugged, smug and fearless. “Mama said you would.”I looked away quickly, pretending to smooth an already-perfect fold in the b

(Calla’s POV)The second knock of the day came just after noon. This time, I was already on edge. The sun filtering in through the frosted windows had begun to wane, casting a pale haze across the wooden floors. I’d just finished putting away Asher’s mittens and scarf, the ones he’d thrown off in protest because “the room wasn’t cold, Mama,” when the sound echoed again—three light taps.Too polite. Too rehearsed.I opened the door to find three maids again. The same trio as before.Only now, they were pushing in more than groceries. Rolls of winter fabric, thick coats, boxes of thermals, dried herbs, and rare spice sachets lined the trolley. A second maid wheeled in what looked like an insulated crate of meats. All wrapped. Labeled. High-quality.And I hadn’t asked for any of it.“Alpha’s orders,” said the youngest of them. She had golden skin, wide brown eyes that darted quickly to the floor, and a voice that didn’t quite match the confidence of her steps.“Where do you want them?” t

(Rowan’s POV)I barely had time to wash Lena’s poisonous scent off me before the hounds started circling. There was a knock at my study door—three firm raps. Controlled. Measured. The kind of knock that came from someone who believed they had a right to your time, your space, your decisions.I could guess before the name even slipped out of my mouth.“Elira,” I muttered before the guard even announced her.And I was right. The doors opened, and in glided Elder Elira, flanked by two of her fellow council members—Elder Brane, ever-silent but sharp-eyed, and Elder Triss, whose thin lips curled as if the air inside my study offended her.“My Alpha,” Elira said, her voice honey-laced and dipped in age-old arrogance. “I hope we are not intruding.”“You are,” I replied, not bothering to rise from my seat. “But go on.”Elira’s smile never wavered as she stepped further into the room. She always dressed in ceremonial robes even when it wasn’t required, as if the authority of the Elders needed

(Rowan’s POV)I shouldn’t have come down here. That much was already clear. The moment I stepped into the South Parlor, I regretted it.Lena Creek sat draped across the chaise like she owned the damn pack. Pale legs crossed, deep crimson lips curled into a smirk, and eyes that were too calculating to ever be soft. She wore her ambition like perfume—thick, cloying, and impossible to ignore.“Rowan,” she purred, rising to her feet. “I was beginning to think you’d make me wait all day.”“You nearly did,” I muttered. She clicked her tongue and moved toward me, each step poised and theatrical. The maids stationed at the side bowed and stepped back, but Lena turned to them with a gracious smile.“Leave us,” she said sweetly. “This is… a private matter.”The guards glanced at me for confirmation.I nodded once. “Out. Everyone.”They bowed and disappeared quickly. The door shut with a quiet finality, locking us into a silence I had no interest in filling. She wasted no time.“I worry for you,
