Chapter 2

Amy's POV 

I was slipping in and out of consciousness when I saw the doctor pulling my son out of me. I grabbed the sheets as tears ran down my cheeks. Darkness pressed against me and my eyes dimmed.

“Stay awake.” A nurse said, pressing a wet towel against my face. 

“There’s another one.” The doctor announced, moving around frantically. 

Another one? I wasn't expecting twins. I tried to ask them what was happening but my throat felt so raw that talking felt impossible. 

“I would need you to stay awake for me.” the nurse said, propping my head up with a pillow. The doctor strapped my legs open. 

“Push.”

A scream tore from my throat as I pushed with whatever strength I had left. I felt something pop out of me in one smooth glide. The doctor picked up my second child. He was smaller than the first. 

My brows creased. He wasn't crying. Why wasn't he crying? The doctor quickly handed him over to a nurse who held him to her chest and ran out of the room.

“Where is she taking my baby?” I screamed despite how painful it was. 

“Calm down.” The doctor said, “He needs to be attended to.”

“Is he alive?” I grabbed the doctor. “Please tell me my child is alive.”

She signalled to two other nurses and they held me down as she injected me. I wanted to fight and get my answers but my strength slowly ebbed away from me until there was nothing left. 

       The bright light cut through my eyes as I slowly opened them. It took almost a minute before I remembered where I was. I groaned as I looked around the room. I couldn't tell how long I had been out. 

The door opened and Alpha Lucas walked into the room closely followed by a maid holding my first child and a pack guard. I instantly tried to jerk off the bed but I realized one of my hands had been chained to the bed. 

“Finally, you are awake.” 

“What is the meaning of this?” I tugged at the chain again. 

“You are only going to injure yourself if you keep struggling.” 

He nodded and the guard moved forward and dropped a paper on my legs. The pack's logo was on it. My eyes quickly scanned the paper and my stomach sank. 

The words payoff and custody jumped at me. They wanted me to hand over custody of my child?

“I am not going to sign this.”

Lucas scoffed. “Signing those papers would only do you good.”

I pulled at the silver cuffs again and it bit hard into my skin. I gritted my teeth in pain. 

“What are you talking about?”

“Whether or not you sign those papers, my grandson comes home with me. Sign those papers so my lawyers can pay you off.”

“I don't want your dirty money.” I cried. “Where is Thane?”

“In the bosom of his future wife.” Lucas said with a smirk. 

I clenched my fist and inhaled deeply. 

“He doesn't want to see you.” He added. 

I spat on Lucas’ shoe. “You are not going to get away with this.” 

He looked down at the shoes and in one smooth move, he was beside me his hands wrapped around my neck. My eyes bulged in surprise. I tried to fight him off but my injured self was nothing compared to him. 

“I could kill you and have you buried in a couple of hours and no one would look for you. You are alone in this world, Amy. Don't ever forget that.”

He pushed me back, releasing my throat and the rush of air to my lungs almost knocked me out. 

He turned to the door and started walking. 

“Please let me hold him.” I choked out. “Please.”

He stopped in his tracks and nodded at the maid. She walked up to me and dropped him on my chest. 

I inhaled deeply. His scent was similar to Thane's. I brushed my chin over his curly hair. His little hands brushed my face, wiping my tears. 

Lucas started walking out and the maid immediately snatched him back. 

“No please.” I screamed. “My baby.”

The guard remained by the door as they walked away. I screamed and screamed until my voice was gone. My body shook with exhaustion and my throat burned. 

The guard approached me and undid the chains. I watched him as he walked out. A part of me wanted to run after him and ask him to take me to my child but my body couldn't do anything but lay curled up and defeated. 

      I was still hugging myself in that position when the nurse who had taken my second child walked in. She looked at me with pity and I instantly hated myself. 

“Are you here to give me more bad news?” I sobbed. 

“Yes.” She exhaled. 

I looked up weakly. “Did they take my second child too?”

She went on her knees beside me and wiped the tears from my face with shaky hands. 

“We lost him.” She whispered and I went still. An unfamiliar pain ripped through my chest. It was hot and cruel. 

I wanted to scream but I didn't think I had the voice for that. My lips began to tremble and my fingers curled tightly into the nurse’s shirt. 

“No.” I gasped. “It can't be.”

“We tried everything we could but his heart wasn't properly developed.”

“Take me to my baby.”

She stared at me blankly for a second and I shook her roughly. “I want to see my child.”

       The room we stepped into was cold and there was a single small bed in the middle. The streak of silver hair first caught my attention. He was pale and small and most importantly, dead. The nurse stood stiffly by the door and I turned to her.

“Can I be alone with him?”

She nodded. “I’ll just be around the corner.”

I ran my trembling fingers against his cheeks and then his arms. My eyes went to the window where the moon hung brightly in the sky. 

“Dear goddess, you are the mother of all creations. You wouldn't do this to me.”

I picked up my baby from the cot and walked to the window. I set him down by the sill and looked up with teary eyes. 

“You never gave me my wolf. The man I loved never loved me and you let them take away my first child.” I screamed as tears welled in my eyes. “Now you take the only person I have. What have I done for you to be so cruel?”

My ribs hurt and I doubled over as the tears ran down my cheeks. I placed my head on his body and cried. 

I suddenly froze when I heard the faintest heartbeat. I raised my head and looked at my child before glancing at the moon. I waited for a minute and there was nothing. 

“Even a cursed wolf deserves a better life.” I spat as I angrily picked his body up to return him to the cot. As I set him down, he stirred and then the weakest cry tore from his throat.
