Chapter 3 Bloom

3 Months Earlier…

I stood at a crossroads: an honorable death or a coward's life. My father's words echoed through my mind, the same words he'd drilled into me for years.

'Move before fear takes control.'

I could've turned around and left the moment I sensed the danger. Maybe I should have.

But that wasn't who I was.

I drew a slow breath, and it felt like the forest breathed with me. I could hear the wind weaving through the tops of the pines, the tiny claws of a mole digging several feet beneath the earth, even the steady heartbeat of an owl asleep inside the hollow of an ancient oak fifty yards away.

My father's blood ran through my veins, and I'd never seen not having a wolf as a weakness. Most werewolves did. But my senses had never been shared with another soul. They had always been mine alone—sharp, clear, and driven by instincts that never stopped working.

To me, the night wasn't dark. It was simply filled with more detail. Then a familiar scent hit me.

Rusted iron. Fresh blood. Fear.

A woman's scream ripped through the silence. My body reacted before my mind could. My muscles tightened, and the next thing I knew I was sprinting through the trees. I vaulted over tangled roots, slipped through thorn bushes without brushing a single branch, my feet barely touching the ground.

Seconds later, I froze.

A massive werewolf was dragging a young woman deeper into the woods. Dried blood and mud dulled his fur, and his eyes held nothing but savage brutality. She struggled with everything she had, but every attempt to break free faded against his overwhelming strength.

My throat tightened.

For a split second, I was back at that camp three years ago. The night I'd frozen. The people I couldn't save.

No. Not again.

"Let her go!"

My voice came out calmer than I expected. My father had never taught me to be fearless. He taught me how to move while I was afraid.

The rogue released the woman and turned toward me. Saliva dripped from the corner of his mouth. There was no hunger in his eyes—only hatred. He was an exile, cast out by his pack and driven insane over time. The thing standing in front of me wasn't a man anymore. It was muscle, claws, and the instinct to kill.

With a deafening roar, he lunged.

The wind shifted. The instant I saw the muscles in his shoulder tense, I knew where he was going to strike. I twisted aside at the last possible second, and his claws sliced through the air inches from my face.

I didn't waste the opening when he lost his balance. I drove my elbow into his stomach with every ounce of force I had. He staggered with a pained growl but stayed on his feet. Just as he prepared to charge again, another shadow burst out of the forest.

My first instinct was to defend myself. I thought a second enemy was coming for me. Then I realized the newcomer wasn't aiming at me. The shadow was aiming at him.

It was a woman. She shifted in midair, the familiar crack of bones reshaping echoing through the night. Her muscles expanded in seconds as shimmering silver fur spread across her body, catching the moonlight until it looked like liquid silver. For one heartbeat, the entire forest seemed to hold its breath. Then the enormous she-wolf slammed into the rogue.

The impact shook the ground beneath us. Claws tore through the air. Tree trunks shuddered under the force of their blows. I watched for only a second. I had no idea who she was. Or why she'd chosen to help me.

But there wasn't time to find out. I joined the fight. The silver wolf drew the rogue's attention, giving me the opening I needed. I rushed in from the side and landed a crushing blow. The moment he lost his balance, she attacked again. She was fast. Precise. Every movement had purpose. Still, I didn't let my guard down.

Just because she was fighting beside me didn't mean she couldn't turn on me next. The rogue howled in fury and came at both of us. The silver wolf shifted her angle at the last instant, and I instinctively adjusted with her. We were strangers. Yet somehow our movements fit together as if we'd fought side by side for years.

It wasn't planned. We simply knew what we were doing.

The pack combat drills my father had spent years teaching me surfaced on their own. I tracked every move the rogue made while keeping the silver wolf in the corner of my vision. If she made one mistake, I'd be ready for that too.

But she never made that mistake.

The rogue slowly fell back into a defensive stance. As the silver she-wolf lunged for his throat, I cut off his escape. He tried to attack a few more times, but the strength he'd charged in with was gone. The growl rumbling from his chest slowly gave way to fear.

He took one step back. Then another.

And without so much as a glance over his shoulder, he bolted into the darkness.

I watched him disappear for a few seconds, my breathing still uneven. Adrenaline pulsed through my veins as I slowly turned around.

The silver wolf was walking toward me. Every step was calm. Confident. Her amber eyes glowed in the darkness like moonlight.

I didn't move. I didn't run. But I didn't step toward her either. I still hadn't decided who she was.

She stopped a few feet away. Her fur was still bristled, every muscle tense beneath it. She held my gaze without saying a word. Then the familiar transformation began.

Bones shifted with sharp cracks that echoed through the silent forest. The silver fur slowly disappeared, giving way to smooth skin. A few breaths later, a young woman stood where the wolf had been.

The first thing I noticed wasn't how beautiful she was. It was her eyes.

They were hard... but not cruel. They looked like the eyes of someone who'd been fighting for far too long. Small cuts across her body healed right before my eyes. Without thinking, I glanced down at my own injuries. My father had been right. Watching a pure werewolf heal never stopped being incredible.

We kept looking at each other. I wanted to thank her. I wanted to ask who she was. Neither question made it past my lips.

Silence settled between us. It wasn't uncomfortable. Just strange. I'd never seen this woman before, yet she didn't feel like a complete stranger.

Maybe it was because we'd just fought the same enemy. Or maybe it was something else. I didn't know. She dipped her head ever so slightly. Was it a greeting? A silent thank-you? Or simply a farewell before she left?

I couldn't tell.

I took a step toward her. Before I could say a word, she'd already turned away. Within seconds, she disappeared into the shadows between the trees. I stayed where I was. An odd sense of emptiness settled in my chest.

It had been a long time since I'd seen someone of my own kind someone like me. I didn't even know her name, yet I was already annoyed with myself for letting her leave. Should I go after her? For one brief moment, I seriously considered it.

Then a chill crawled across the back of my neck. Every instinct I had flared to life. Someone was watching me. I spun around, scanning the darkness between the trees. I stretched my senses as far as they would reach. Damp earth. Rotting leaves. A few rabbits moving somewhere in the distance.

Nothing else.

But that didn't mean I was alone. I'd felt those eyes. I wasn't just being watched. It was as if someone was judging me... deciding something about me. It couldn't have been human. No human could move that silently. Another werewolf? Or something far more dangerous?

For the first time, I realized I wasn't afraid. I was curious. My thoughts snapped back to the unconscious woman lying on the ground. I hurried over and checked her pulse.

Weak. But steady. A slow breath escaped my lungs before I even realized I'd been holding it. This time I wasn't too late.

I carefully lifted her into my arms. When her head rested against my shoulder, I could feel the icy chill of her skin even through my jacket. The hospital was a long run from here. As I prepared to leave, my eyes drifted to the place where the silver wolf had disappeared.

Her scent still lingered in the forest. She was already gone. Yet I couldn't shake the feeling that this wasn't the last time our paths would cross.

So I ran.

My footsteps shattered the quiet of the forest as I held the woman close. Trees blurred past me, branches brushing against my shoulders before vanishing behind me. After a while, I realized something. I wasn't only running toward the hospital.

It felt like I was running away from something. But why? Was I still the hunter or had I unknowingly become the prey?

I tried to push the memory of those unseen eyes out of my head, but my thoughts kept circling back to the silver-haired woman. Who was she? Why had she risked herself for me without a second thought?

And that small nod before she left... Was it nothing more than a silent thank-you?

Or had it meant something I simply couldn't understand?

As I reached the edge of the forest, the bright lights of the hospital came into view. The sharp scent of antiseptic and metal hit my nose, and I found myself slowing down. I was stepping back into the safety of civilization. But what had happened in those woods still clung to my skin.

I tightened my hold on the woman in my arms. One last time, I looked back. The forest stood silent. Empty. Yet I felt certain of one thing.

Tonight, I hadn't just saved a life. For the first time, I'd truly realized that the world my father had spent years preparing me for was far bigger than I'd ever imagined.

The moment I stepped through the emergency room doors, chaos erupted.

"What happened to her?"

"Get a gurney! Now!"

Voices overlapped as medical staff rushed toward us. Without saying a word, I handed the woman over. The blood on my hands hadn't even dried yet. Doctors hurried her deeper into the hospital while I stayed several steps behind. I stood there for a moment before quietly sinking into one of the chairs in the corner.

The hospital buzzed with noise. Hurried footsteps. The sharp beeping of monitors. Panicked voices. Compared to all of this, the silence of the forest suddenly felt almost peaceful.

I looked down at my hands. They were still trembling. Not from fear. The adrenaline was finally wearing off. But my mind was still back in those woods. Those amber eyes refused to leave me. Would I ever see her again?

I didn't know.

But one thing felt certain. Tonight wasn't the end. It was only the beginning of the story.

The thread inside my head had been hammering against my temples like a poisoned needle since last night. Bloom standing against the cold glass of her window, looking straight into my eyes as she accused me of being nothing more than an ordinary man ruled by primitive wolf instincts, had sent Axel into a violent rage behind my ribs.I hadn't been able to tell her the truth. I hadn't been able to explain that the damned arrangement with Fiona had only ever been a cover. All I'd told Bloom was that Fiona had been a shield. But today, everything was going to change. Alpha Ronan's dangerous plan to use Bloom as bait had Axel growling with dark satisfaction deep inside me. Fake or not, the little fox would finally be mine.Under the same roof. Far away from the pack. We all left the pack house together that morning and drove to school, but the atmosphere inside the car felt heavier than last night's battle.Bloom stared out the window, trying to understand the newly awakened pack bonds insi

The ancient cellar seemed to freeze the moment those words left Alpha Ronan's mouth. The blood of the First Line. For centuries, it had been nothing more than a legend. A faded story carved into the runes that lined forgotten walls. And now...It was lying right in front of me. On the parchment beneath my hands. In my veins. The shock on everyone's faces slowly transformed into something much darker. Calculation."Everything you've seen and heard in this room," Ronan thundered, his voice cracking through the underground chamber like a whip, "never leaves it."His gaze swept over each of us. "Not one word.""No one learns the truth about Bloom's blood."No one argued. No one even looked capable of speaking. Kai and Ivy were still staring at the parchment—at my family tree—as though their minds hadn't caught up with what they were seeing.Even after we returned upstairs to Alpha Ronan's large study, the suffocating silence followed us. I drifted toward one corner of the room. Kai leaned

The moment I opened my eyes, the cold gray haze of dawn spilling through my window slammed every blood-soaked memory from last night back into me. The lingering scent of blueberries and juniper clinging to my pillow stung my nose, dragging me straight back to the devastating closeness we'd shared... and the brutal way it had shattered afterward. But waking up today felt different. There was a strange crowd inside my head. A dull ache pulsed behind my temples. When I closed my eyes and took a slow breath, I felt it—completely, unmistakably. The massive pack bond that had been branded into my veins last night. I could sense the lower-ranking wolves in the manor courtyard cleaning up the aftermath of yesterday's attack. I could feel the exhausted pain radiating from the injured in the infirmary. The blue embers burning in Cassian's eyes glowed even brighter in the dim light of the room, and the distance between us disappeared within seconds. The more the wild warmth of his skin—still carrying the scent of fresh battle and blood—filled my lungs, the more every rational thought inside my head quietly committed suicide. His fingers were laced tightly with mine. I could feel the incredible strength unique to the wolf in his grip, and the frantic rhythm of the golden thread connecting our minds echoed straight through my soul.He lowered his head. The deafening roar rising from the dark forest shattered the ancient silence of the ritual grounds like glass. Inside my mind, the newly formed web of glowing bonds trembled in terror. The hundreds of threads that had only moments ago been sealed into my veins suddenly pulled tight beneath the heat of foreign hatred and approaching death. The sense of wholeness I had felt seconds earlier vanished, replaced instantly by a primal instinct to survive.“They breached the border!” Beta Zane roared, every trace of his usual professional composure gone. “Form the defensive line!”Masked figures burst from the shadows between the trees, followed by fanatical wolves whose eyes burned with pure hatred. When Alpha Ronan raised the massive dagger engraved with ominous ancient runes into the pale light of the full moon, the entire forest fell into a breathtaking silence. The ancient symbols carved into the blade glowed in the darkness like the eyes of a starving beast. Great. The silver needle wasn't enough, so now we're adding a sword.I tried to steady my breathing, though my heart was still racing from everything that had happened. But the crushing Alpha aura rolling off Ronan in relentless waves made it painfully clear that this wasn't something to joke about.Without taking his eyes off mine for even a second, Ronan turned the blade toward himself and pressed its razor-sharp edge against his left palm. One swift motion. A deep cut split across his hand. Dark crimson blood, thick with Alpha power, slowly trickled down the blade in heavy metallic drops.Even the scent of it changed the atmosphere. Low, reverent growls rippled through the hundreds of wolves surrounding us. Holding up
