Chapter 39 Bloom

The poisonous storm of jealousy I'd left behind in the school hallway gave way to a cold, undeniable reality the moment we crossed back onto pack territory.

I was standing at the edge of a decision I couldn't take back. And time had been slipping away faster than I wanted.

I wasn't even given the chance to change out of my school clothes. By the time darkness settled over the forest, I found myself walking toward the western edge of the pack grounds.

The western side was different from the rest of the territory. Isolated. Ancient.

Towering oak trees stretched overhead, their massive branches weaving together to form a canopy that swallowed the night sky. The earth beneath my feet was darker here, and the air felt impossibly heavy. With every step, I could feel the lingering traces of centuries-old wolf blood and ancient magic woven into the soil itself.

So a pack had lived here long before this one ever claimed the land.

When we reached the clearing, enormous torches standing among the trees crackled as their flames pushed back the darkness. But the fire wasn't what made it hard to breathe. It was the atmosphere.

The entire Pack Council was already waiting.

At the front of the wide circular stone platform carved with ancient runes stood Alpha Ronan and Luna Sierra, motionless as statues. Beside them were Beta Zane, Beta Nova, and Gamma Carter—the leaders responsible for the pack's strength, order, and defense. This time, however, the trial wasn't hidden behind closed doors.

Dozens of pack members had gathered around the stone circle, eager to witness the historic moment—a hybrid fighting for the right to become one of them. The scent of wolves hanging in the air was so thick it burned my lungs. Hundreds of eyes watched me from the darkness.

To the left of the circle, standing slightly ahead of the crowd, I spotted Cassian, Ivy, and Kai. The anger that had consumed Cassian back at school was gone. In its place was something worse.

His blue eyes churned like a storm-tossed sea, and his jaw was locked so tightly I thought it might crack.

Ivy stood with her hands clasped tightly in front of her chest, chewing nervously on her lower lip.

Kai watched me with an unusual seriousness, as though trying to predict every move I was about to make.

Seeing all three of them so worried only fueled the stubborn fire burning inside me. Beta Zane stepped forward with slow, deliberate strides until he reached the center of the stone circle. His deep voice carried across the clearing, drowning out the crackling torches.

"Gather!"

His gaze settled directly on me.

"Today, we are here to witness the first physical trial of Bloom Fox as she fights for the right to join this pack."

His voice echoed through the silent crowd.

"You should understand this, Bloom. Walking through these gates isn't simply a declaration of intent. This trial will measure your will, your endurance, and how far you're willing to go—what you're willing to sacrifice—for this pack."

He paused, sweeping his gaze over the members of the council before looking back at me.

"The physical examination consists of three stages."

His expression hardened.

"And tonight, we begin with the first."

"Stage One..."

As Zane stepped aside, Alpha Ronan walked slowly toward the exact center of the circle.

The absolute authority in his eyes hung over me like an executioner's blade. He stopped only a few feet away.

"Are you ready, Bloom?"

It didn't sound like a question. It sounded like the announcement of an unavoidable fate.

"I'm ready."

I clenched my teeth to keep my voice from trembling before the crowd. Straightening my spine, I lowered my arms to my sides and focused entirely on him. Ronan didn't say another word. He simply narrowed his eyes. And then within a single heartbeat the most terrifying force I had ever experienced crashed down on me.

Alpha Ronan unleashed the full weight of his ancient Alpha Authority and Wolf Aura. Every bit of it. Focused entirely... On me. The air vanished from my lungs. It felt as if the sky itself had collapsed, dropping an impossibly massive mountain onto my body.

An invisible hand wrapped around my throat, squeezing until breathing became impossible. Every desperate breath I forced into my lungs felt like molten lead sliding down my throat.

My knees buckled instinctively. I could hear the sharp ache deep inside my bones, feel every joint screaming beneath the overwhelming pressure. My mind repeated the same command over and over.

Kneel.

Bow.

Submit.

End the pain.

"No..."

The word barely escaped my lips as a broken whisper. The pressure was enough to shatter an ordinary human's bones, crush their mind, and drive them unconscious.

But buried beneath my human form...

Wolf blood answered. It surged forward like a shield. No, I wasn't a full-blooded werewolf. I couldn't bare claws or snarl back at an Alpha's dominance. But I wasn't human either.

The resilience flowing through my hybrid blood—the unnatural recovery, the relentless stubbornness that had kept me alive all these years—rose from every cell in my body and refused to surrender.

My vision blurred. The torchlight melted together into streaks of gold. Warm blood slipped from my nose, running over my upper lip before dripping from my chin.

The pressure crushing my rib cage became so intense I thought my heart would burst straight through my chest. My lungs felt like they were on fire. Somehow... I stayed standing.

In the middle of that unbearable agony, my eyes drifted beyond the circle. To a pair of blue eyes. Cassian.

He was the future Alpha.

Yet in that moment, he looked utterly helpless. Even from where I stood, I could feel Axel raging inside him through the violent waves pouring from his aura. The wolf was losing his mind, unable to bear watching Ronan force me through this pain.

Cassian suddenly lunged forward. The veins in his neck stood out sharply. His eyes had gone almost black. He was ready to shatter every invisible chain holding him back, storm into the circle, and drag me away from Ronan's crushing dominance.

But Kai and Ivy grabbed him at the same time.

Each clung tightly to one of his arms, using every ounce of strength they had to keep him from moving. If Cassian stepped into that circle...

He would break the pack's greatest law. He would openly defy his Alpha. And my trial would end in failure. I didn't miss the look on his face.

The proud, powerful man who always seemed untouchable was unraveling before my eyes, forced to stand there and watch me suffer.

Seeing that fear...

That raw anguish...

Something fierce reignited inside me. I wouldn't let him save me. I wouldn't let anyone look at me with pity.

As the final seconds ticked away, my consciousness teetered on the edge of darkness. My knees were ready to give out beneath me. I was at my limit. Balanced on the edge of a bottomless abyss. Then the ancient ache buried deep within my chest exploded. Power ripped through my veins like a volcano erupting.

For a single heartbeat, I was certain my eyes flashed with a blazing color that wasn't human. The wild energy surging from somewhere deep inside me expanded outward and tore straight through the crushing weight of Ronan's aura.

I stood tall.

Ignoring the blood running down my face, I lifted my chin and met Alpha Ronan's eyes without hesitation. I hadn't bowed. I hadn't knelt. I had proven that I could withstand the authority of an Alpha whose pack I didn't even belong to.

For the briefest instant...

Surprise flickered across Ronan's face. Then the allotted time expired. With a single breath, Ronan withdrew the suffocating pressure completely. Fresh air rushed back into the clearing. My lungs greedily filled as I drew my first real breath in what felt like an eternity.

But I never looked away from him. A stunned silence settled over the crowd. No one even whispered. Every pack member simply stared at the hybrid girl who was still standing.

Beta Zane stepped forward, breaking the silence. There was unmistakable respect in his voice now. Respect...

And pride he didn't quite manage to hide. "Time's up!"

He turned toward the crowd before looking back at me. "Stage One..." He gave a single nod. "...is complete."
