We stand inside his study. It's the study he uses when he visits the academy. A desk, a lamp, a few chairs. He shuts the door and turns to face me.
I keep my left hand behind my back. The burning has stopped, but the mark is still there.
"Go on."
"Your men have been following him for months. He knows. He has never tried to lose them."
"He doesn't care that they're there." I choose my words carefully. "You didn't like that. You never said it, but I noticed."
His face doesn't change. "So you decided to make him care."
"Yes. The girl was the one thing he couldn't ignore."
"A wolfless girl. In front of the whole academy, in front of the council."
"Yes."
"Then you should have done it properly."
His voice stays flat for that sentence. It doesn't stay flat for the next one.
"That's one reason," he says. "Give me another."
"I'm your heir."
"Heirs can be replaced."
The room goes quiet.
"You had the headmaster bound," he says. "You had the council seated. You had everything you needed to finish it in one afternoon." He steps closer.
"And you stopped. The elders tell me you shouted. They tell me you sent everyone out like a boy who lost control of his own game."
"Father—"
"Do you know what they saw today?" He is shouting now.
"They saw an Alpha who can't finish what he starts. They saw the next king stop in the middle of a punishment and clear the yard!"
I say nothing.
"Why did you stop?"
"I made a mistake."
"That is not an answer."
"It's the one I have."
He stares at a point just past my shoulder. His jaw works. He doesn't push it.
That worries me more than if he had.
I clench my teeth until they hurt. I hate him. I have hated him for years, and I've gotten good at hiding it. One day I'll be stronger than him. Until then I say what he wants to hear.
"I apologise," I say.
The words taste awful.
Darius pauses. Then he walks up to me, slowly, and puts his hand on my cheek. The same cheek he hit. His thumb rests under my eye.
"Don't disappoint me again," he says.
There's nothing warm in it. When I was younger, this used to confuse me. I thought it meant he cared. Now I know what it is. It's another way of holding the leash.
"I won't," I say.
He drops his hand. "Blessing Night is close."
"Yes."
"What preparations have you made for your mate?"
Mating and Blessing Night is the one night the Moon Goddess gives wolves their mates. She picks them by her own will, or her own mood. It depends on who you ask. Nobody has ever worked out which.
Men like my father think she can be persuaded. Offerings, favors. The right words said at the right altar. They think she can be bargained with like a council member.
I think she does what she wants. I don't trust anything that decides a person's whole life based on how she feels that night.
And I don't want a mate. A mate is one more weight on me. One more person to protect and answer for. I have plans, and she would only get in the way.
My father waits for an answer. I give him nothing.
"Even at your age," he says, "I still have to do everything for you."
He turns and walks to the desk. He doesn't search. His hand goes straight to a stack of files, runs along the edges, and pulls one out.
He holds it toward me.
"Take it."
I take it. "What is this?"
"A new student is arriving soon. Everything you need to know about her is in there."
I frown. I don't like where this is going. I don't interrupt.
"She is the daughter of the Ice King," Darius says. "He is powerful and well connected. We need him."
He doesn't say why. I don't ask.
I open the file. A single name is printed at the top of the first page.
Nynx.
Darius comes closer. He stops right in front of me, his pale eyes fixed somewhere beyond my shoulder.
"You will make her your mate,".
TessaThe second Knox's footsteps fade, my legs give out.I drop to the stone floor and grab my neck. My fingers come away red. It's only a small drop of blood, but it's mine. That bastard actually hurt me.My heart is racing so fast I can feel it in my ears. I try to breathe slowly. It doesn't work."Tessa!"I turn my head.Levana is running across the courtyard, and she looks furious."What were you thinking?" She skids to a stop in front of me. "Are you mad? Have you completely lost your mind? You told the Alpha of Alphas to punish you!"I laugh. It comes out cracked and tired."Why are you laughing?""I don't know."She drops down beside me. Her eyes land on my neck and her whole face changes."He hurt you?" Her voice goes low. "That piece of..."She doesn't finish. She presses her lips together instead."Okay," she says after a moment. "Tell me how you got out of that. Knox cleared the whole yard. Then I find you on the ground with blood on your neck. How did you walk away from h

Knox. The pain is easing.Slowly. Like the grip on my hand has been reduced slighty but the hand still remains. My hand still throbs but I can close my fingers properly now and the burning has dropped from unbearable to manageable and I keep my grip on her jaw and look at her and wait for it to make sense. It doesn't make sense."What are you doing to me," I say again.Tessa's jaw tightens under my hand. Her eyes are doing two things at once — fear and anger, fighting each other, neither winning."I'm not doing anything," she says."Try again.""I'm not." Her voice is clipped. Controlled. "You're the one who marked me. If anyone is doing something it's you."I look at the mark on her wrist. It's fading. Not gone. But fading — the flame shape that was vivid orange two nights ago has gone pale, almost translucent, like something draining out of it.I look at the mark on my own hand.Same thing.I look back at her."What does that mean," I say.Her jaw tightens again. She's biting someth
Chapter SixKnoxShe means it.I can tell because she hasn’t flinched once. Her breathing is uneven, but her eyes haven’t left mine since she said those words.Loud enough for every elder, student, and guard in the courtyard to hear.I look at Alaric. His composure is beginning to crack. His hands are bound with iron laced with suppressants, preventing him from shifting. I’ve watched him try twice. Both times, his body tensed as if his wolf were about to emerge, only for the attempt to fail. Now he’s standing there, helpless, with desperation written all over his face.I turn back to Tessa.“Take her.”I step away from her, giving the guards room to move in.Everything happens at once.Alaric surges forward, putting himself between Tessa and the nearest guard despite his bound hands.“Knox, don’t do this. You have no idea what you’re—”“Remove him.”Two guards seize Alaric by the arms and pull him back.“You don’t understand what you’re doing!” he shouts.“Take him further away.”They
Chapter FiveTessaI barely slept. The dream keeps replaying in my head. Smoke, a woman on the floor, a figure standing in the doorway before turning away. Every time I close my eyes, I’m back there.By four, I gave up trying to sleep. My alarm eventually went off, forcing me to get up and pretend to be a functioning person. So naturally, Mira finds me before I’ve even returned the dishes.“You look awful,” she says, falling into step beside me. “Bad night?”“Dishes to return. Move.”“I’m just saying. You look like something that got dragged in. More than usual.”I ignore her.“We’ve been wondering something, actually.” Her voice takes on that familiar sweetness she uses when she’s about to be cruel. “Who are you, Tessa? You clean things, stay in your little corner, and that’s fine. But then there’s Levana Ashcroft.”My jaw tightens.“Someone saw her saving you again last night. What exactly are you to her?”“Nothing that concerns you.”Mira steps in front of me. “Does Tessa suddenly t
Chapter FourKnox“Why did you do it?”Levana doesn’t look up from the armchair she’s made herself comfortable in.“Good morning to you too.”“Last night. The east grounds. Why were you there?”She finally looks at me. Levana rarely gets startled, but something changes in her expression as she studies me.“How do you know about that?”“Answer the question.”“I don’t have to.”“Levana.”She stares at me for a moment before crossing her arms.“Someone was about to get torn apart on the grounds. I stepped in. That’s all.”“You protected someone? You?”“I was out, I saw a problem, and I dealt with it.” She gives me an unimpressed look. “Is that a crime now?”“Coming from you? It’s surprising.”Levana might be pink like a candy but she’s just as ruthless as us. I watch her face.“That girl…”“She has a name. Tessa.” Her voice hardens. “She’s my friend and my roommate. There. Now you know.”“She’s wolfless.”I say it slowly, watching for a reaction.Levana barely blinks. So she already knew
