I blinked awake to the soft hum of machines. The sharp ache I’d felt before was mostly gone.

That can’t be right, I thought, pushing the blanket down. My arm,where the claw had raked me, looked like a two-day-old scratch, not a fresh wound.

A nurse stepped in with a warm smile. “Good morning, Maya. How are you feeling?”

“Sore,” I admitted, flexing my fingers, “but… it doesn’t hurt as much as it should.”

She gave a little shrug. “You’re healing faster than expected. That’s good news. Your friends are still outside waiting for you.”

She placed a folded stack of clean clothes on the side table. “You’re cleared to leave whenever you’re ready.”

“Thanks,” I said, still staring at the half-healed marks on my skin.

When the door closed, I changed quickly, wincing only a little as I slipped the shirt over my head. I was fastening the last button when the door swung open again.

“Maya!” Fiona’s voice cracked in shock.
