I stumbled out of the dorm, heart hammering, every word I’d overheard from Maya slicing through me. Her own father… all that pain… while I’ve been standing here pretending I can ignore the bond.

“Damn it!”

I slammed my fist into the brick wall. Pain shot up my arm, but it was nothing compared to the burn in my chest.

Another punch. Crack. My knuckles bled.

Liam!”

Zack’s voice cut through the night. He jogged toward me, eyes wide. “What the hell, man? You never lose it like this. Talk to me.”

I pressed my forehead against the wall, breathing hard. “I… I can’t” My voice cracked. “I can’t believe what she’s been through.”

Zack stepped closer, concern etched on his face. “Is this about Maya?”

I turned, tears stinging my eyes. “She’s my mate, Zack.” The words tore out of me like a confession I’d held for years. “She’s my mate, and I’ve been a coward.”
