MY NEW BEGINNING When Lily and I got to the dorm, I froze in the doorway, my hand clamped to the frame. It wasn’t the cold, quiet space I’d imagined instead, the room buzzed with life. Fairy lights draped across the walls glowed softly, even in daylight, while posters plastered every surface: bands I’d never heard of and bold, handwritten quotes. The air smelled faintly of butter and something sweet, and laughter rang out from every corner. Two girls lingered by the kitchen. One wielded a spatula like a sword, her ponytail thrashing wildly as she argued. "I told you three eggs were fine! You can be such a pain, you know that," she snapped, eyes glinting. The other girl pressed a plate to her chest like a prized treasure and shot back, “Three? You eat like a rabbit,” her voice, sharp yet playful. Their bickering sounded so normal, so silly, that a smile tugged at my lips I couldn't stop it, and I didn't want to, something in me wanted to join them. But then the air shifted.

MY FIRST HOCKEY GAME The hallway felt too long as I walked, my shoes clicking softly against the polished floor. My chest was still tight, my heart thumping faster than it should. Every time I blinked, I kept seeing his face, the way his eyes had lingered on me earlier. It wasn’t just a normal look. There had been something deeper there, something that made me restless inside. I hated how it left my stomach flipping. I pressed my palm against my chest like that would calm the beat. It didn’t. Questions crowded my mind as I walked. Could I really do this? Could I still play the way I used to? What if I embarrassed myself? What if everyone laughed? My head spun with doubts, and yet beneath all of that, a small spark of excitement was still alive. When I finally reached my dorm, relief spread through me like warm water. The day had gone by so fast, almost like a blur of new faces, loud voices, and endless stares. It should’ve drained me completely, but instead, I just felt… unsettled.

Gosh, our mate is hot, my wolf Axel growled in my head as soon as Maya stepped onto the ice in her new uniform. I couldn’t even argue. She looked strong and quick, her dark hair tucked under her helmet, eyes sharp and focused. Don’t just stare, Axel pushed. Go claim her. “Not now,” I muttered under my breath. Coward, he snapped, then went silent, shutting me out. I exhaled, jaw tight. He wasn’t wrong. Our mate was right there, gliding across the ice like she owned it, and I was still tangled up with Lia. I’d promised her… and I didn’t even know why I’d let it get this far. Zack skated past and elbowed me lightly. “Dude, you good? You’re zoning out.” “Yeah,” I said quickly, eyes still on Maya. “Just… watching her play.” “She’s impressive,” Zack admitted, following my gaze. “Small but fierce. James is already annoyed.” I couldn’t help the faint smile that tugged at my lips. “Good. He deserves it.” Across the rink, Maya darted around James with a sudden burst of speed,

I slammed the bathroom door shut and pressed my back against it, breathing hard.My dress was a mess, dark red stains spreading like an ugly badge.Anger burned through me, hotter than anything I’d felt before. For a heartbeat, the air seemed to hum around me, and when I looked in the mirror I swore my eyes flashed a strange silver-blue.“What… was that?” I whispered to myself, gripping the sink. “Get it together, Maya.”A soft knock followed.“Maya? It’s Lily. Can I come in?”I hesitated, then cracked the door. “I’m fine,” I lied. She slipped in, carrying a damp towel and a small makeup bag. “No, you’re not fine. Lia’s a jealous brat. Don’t let her win.”I glanced at the mirror again, rubbing at the wine stain. “I shouldn’t have come. Everyone’s staring, and now this.”“Hey.” Lily touched my arm, her voice firm but kind. “You belong here as much as anyone. You beat every guy on that ice. That’s real.”The heat inside me flared again, a strange pulse under my skin.I looked up quickly.
