I still couldn’t shake how the opposing players had looked at her,like they knew her, like they were trying to break her. My wolf, Axel, rumbled low inside me.

No one hurts our mate.

I know, I told him silently.

A sudden, bone-jarring THUD rocked the van. Metal groaned as we swerved hard and slammed into a tree.

“Everyone okay?” I shouted, twisting around.

“I,I think so,” Lily stammered, clutching the seat.

“My ankle’s fine,” Maya said, wide-eyed but steady. “What was that?”

Fiona hugged her bag. “Did we hit an animal?”

Zack was already unbuckling. “I’ll check the engine.”

I caught his eye and nodded. “I’m coming.” I turned back to the girls. “Stay inside and keep the doors locked. Don’t move until we’re back, got it?”
