Roman“What's your name?” I asked. I was sitting across from the boy whom Brian caught yesterday. The same boy with eyes like my sister's. The fire in his eyes especially reminded me of her. The same fire that died out even before our world came crumbling down. “Trey,” he answered gently before blinking. He wasn't fidgeting in his seat, but I could see his hands trembling each time I said a word. Brian said he hadn't spoken a word to the kid since he brought him here. So, I was guessing he was scared and agitated. “How old are you, Trey?” “I'll be 9 years old in two months.” I wasn't good at interrogating kids. Neither of my men was either. I could've allowed Jake to interrogate him if he had presented himself better, but instead, the asshole got on my last damn nerves. Adults were better off being interrogated. One slice at their finger, one stab on the thigh, one form of little electrocution, they'd spill everything. “Where do you live, Trey?” “I live alone,” he answered.
Roman “Good morning, Alpha Roman. The elders are waiting,” Jake announced once I came out of the elevator. I paused and took a good look at him. Was he so important that murdering him would leave a dent on the pack's affairs? Or should I keep him alive and let the game continue? I was on the edge. The more Scarlet talked about him, the closer I got to murdering him.“Is everything okay, Alpha?” he asked. I'd expected him to leave as soon as the former Alpha was ‘retired’ from his job. Half of the pack guard did. But I was surprised when he stayed. “I'm contemplating whether to kill you or leave you be,” He froze. He didn’t move, not even when I walked into the hall for the meeting with the elders. I’d left him shaken to his core. Others might have dismissed it as a joke, but he was sharp enough to know I wasn’t kidding.“Good morning, Alpha,”“Hello, Alpha,” The pack's council members chorused. I clicked my tongue. Those greetings were inaudible. Incoherent. Reluctant. Forced.
Roman A dangerous calm resonated inside me as I finally walked into the house that night. Several hours had passed since the chaos, and one way or another, it had been contained. The medical team had transferred everyone affected to the pack's hospital, and I could finally breathe after hours of unending drama. “Alpha, what do we do about the boy?” Brian asked as soon as I stepped into the house. I'd told him earlier to keep an eye on the boy till I had the time to talk to him. “I'll talk to him tomorrow,” Brian nodded. Rue was right behind me, since we both left at the same time. He was probably more tired than anyone else since he worked twice as hard. My men knew what they were walking into when they followed me back here, and yet, they were the best demons I could ever ask for. Before I could walk into my room, I turned around and looked at my men.“Everyone should get enough rest tonight. Tomorrow, we'll continue, and we can get excited about the prospect of hunting down tho
ROMAN“Fucking hell!” When the explosion went off, I wasn't on the altar. A few minutes before it happened, I'd left everything for the officiant to take charge of the ceremony while I watched as Sacrlet walked out of the crowd. Curiosity made me follow her. I'd barely left when the explosion happened. Screams erupted from the crowd, and smoke mixed with dust covered the air. I didn't wait for my body to memorise the impact or feel any pain when I stood up and began searching through the chaos. Bodies. So many bodies. I walked through them, picking them up one after the other, touching and trying to make out their faces in a bid to look for Scarlet. I trailed after her and found her crouching on the floor with tears slipping down her face. “Elara,” she’d said. The way she said that name made my heart ache. I guess the rumors were right. Scarlet has a baby, presumably for her human boyfriend. She said some other things after that to the person on the other end of the line. Words
Scarlet I closed my hands over my ears as my knees buckled, crashing onto the ground. A deep tremor had shuddered beneath my feet only moments before the deafening explosion ripped through the air.Darkness swallowed everything around me, or perhaps it was just my vision that became blurry. The acrid stench of smoke clawed at my throat, but fear pinned me in place, too heavy for me to even attempt standing.“MUMMY!” rang out again in a loud voice this time. I tried to pull myself out of the shock, but it was impossible. My hands were trembling, and my heart was pounding so fast I was scared that if it stopped, I would die. “Scarlet,” The monster roared. Somehow, the phone was still pressed to my ear. How did that even happen?“What is this? What are you trying to achieve by putting my daughter on this call?” I asked angrily as my eyes became blurry with tears. “You refused to deliver,” he growled. “Because I couldn't. There was nothing I could do,” I answered, my lips trembling
wouScarlet The initiation ceremony was all everybody talked about all week. Everywhere I turned were people gathering and whispering about it. Most were excited about it. What was so exciting about joining a new pack anyway? As for me, my target was Alpha Roman. I knew it was crazily stupid of me to have approached him with the offer of being friends but at the same time, that was my only option. He'd agreed, though, but I knew somehow I would regret it. I tried to keep up with his schedule all week, but with my classes at school, it was almost impossible. At the end of the week, I realized I had nothing to give back to those monsters. “Hello,” Someone tapped my back as I was on my way to the ascension ground where the initiation would happen. I turned around to see Grace, the admin lady, smiling at me. “Hi,” I couldn't hide the surprise I'd felt seeing her. “You look surprised to see me, Scarlet,” I shook my head and smiled. “I'm so sorry about tjat. It never occurred to me th
