~Brady~

I lay awake thinking about what could possibly have my dad so upset that he walked out of dinner without a single word. Mom always makes such a big deal about us eating together every night as a family. Sometimes it’s our only time together during the week. What’s more nerve wracking is the fact that she didn’t scold him, didn’t say a word. Mom has no problem putting Dad in his place. Ever. Which is quite entertaining when your dad’s job is bossing everyone around and running a pack of werewolves flawlessly. But the look she gave him? It’s got me restless tonight.

The last time I saw that look in her eyes, we were attacked the very next day. I was only 10, but I remember it like yesterday. The rogues from the mountains attacked the south border. Somehow our Gamma found out as he was running from a neighboring pack and overheard some idiot talking about “Black Forest’s weak spot”. Let’s just say it wasn’t weak much longer, but we still lost three warriors.

So now I’m staring at my ceiling, listening for anything. Because of my alpha blood, my wolf came a year early. I’m only 17, but I was stoked when I got my built in best friend last August. It’s hard to believe I’ve only known Knight for 4 months. It feels like he’s always been with me.

“Our pack is strong. No one will harm us. If they try, they will face the consequences.” He tells me.

“I know. I just hate thinking Mom is worried and Dad is in danger. Especially when I should be helping,” I tell him.

“All in good time. We have many fights ahead.” Not sure if that’s supposed to reassure me, but it definitely doesn’t.

Dad has been training me basically since I was born to be the best alpha I can be. Since Knight came along, there’s a lot more that I can do. I’ll have to take full responsibility for the pack by the time I’m 21, so I devote myself to whatever Dad assigns me to do. Right now, my biggest task is training all the younger warriors 21 and under. It’s honestly more fun than work since I enjoy training. Plus it’s a ton of fun to show off and teach some of these guys who the strongest is.

I hear the door close from the stairwell and immediately go to my door to listen. We have the top floor of the pack house to ourselves. It honestly feels like a house of its own. Everything we could want is up here: living area, kitchen, balcony overlooking the property. “Our own oasis,” as my mom says.

“Did they get here safely?” I hear my mom ask.

“Yeah. John looked like shit. Not that I can blame him. I’m just surprised he left instead of ripping that bastard’s head off.”

“Cam, you know that wasn’t an option. He made the right choice. They are safe now. Did they join tonight, or will that be tomorrow?”

“We went ahead and took care of it. The daughter won’t be 18 till July. We will have her join after she gets her wolf.”

“She’s still 17? My word. As if it couldn’t get any worse. That poor child. I’ll go by and check on them tomorrow.”

“Just remember she’s still skittish. She sensed who I was and immediately shied away from me. I guess it just validates what we already knew.”

“Poor child. When will John start work?”

“I told him to take his time. We could really use his skills around here. I’ll never forget how quick he patched up Tom last year. I don’t know what we would have done if it wasn’t for him. Definitely would be down a Gamma.”

“I know. Plus with Dr. Orion retiring next month, this couldn’t have come at a better time for us. Do you think White Fang will retaliate?”

“Only time will tell. Let’s just hope this all blows over. We can always use the excuse that Laura and Cammie were sisters and this is just a way to let the girl know more about her mom. No need to worry any more tonight. Let’s go get some sleep.”

I hear them walk towards the other end of the floor and shut the door. I sit on my floor, thinking about what I just heard. White Fang? The pack that neighbors our East border? What could possibly be going on in that tiny backwater place?

I know my dad and Alpha Walt do not get along at all, but they’ve always kept the peace for the sake of the packs. No need to attack somebody over ego. I know Luna Avery died last week. Mom and Dad sent gifts out of respect. She was a great lady who sadly got chosen by a hothead jerk who thinks he’s better than everyone. Rumor has it he rejected his chosen mate for being “too weak”. It drove her crazy to the point that she had to be isolated for her own safety. He chose Luna Avery because she was young and pretty. Apparently that didn’t stop him from having a few side chicks as well. I heard he would cheat just to hurt Luna Avery if she stepped out of line or did something without his permission. There’s tons of allegations about White Fang and Alpha Walt that go around our pack, but Dad always tells me to judge someone based on what I know, not what I’ve heard.

I plan to investigate some tomorrow. If I’m going to be the best alpha I can be, then I need to know any potential threats, and, more importantly, their weaknesses.

~Brady~ I can’t believe what I just heard. What kind of sick depraved bastard allows children to find torture cells, beats his own pack members, and doesn’t have holding cells? And why does Lindsey think I would do that to anyone? I feel so much pain when I think about what she suffered. She’s so strong; most would have caved in or given up by now. I can’t help growing fonder for her. “Why is she so afraid of us?” Knight pouts in my head. I wish I could answer him. If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it over again I’d let her yell at me a million times over. Anything to have her trust back. “I can’t believe she thinks I would ever do that to her.” I tell Grant when he comes into the room. “I figured you heard. This alpha must be a fucking psycho.” He says quietly. I’ve never seen Grant so serious before. I think he realizes just how bad Lindsey has had it. “I overheard bits and pieces. They had torture cells in White Fang? Is that not illegal?

~Lindsey~ I watch as Aviana and Jacqueline get hauled away, a small part of me hurting for them. I shiver, hoping they will make it out alive. I had snuck to the cells before in White Fang when Jagger and I were kids. There had been some rogue wolves that attacked a family on the border of the pack; thankfully the family survived, but the pup was left with a bad scar. Dad spent hours trying to help heal the little one; he was only four years old at the time. The rogues looked rough even in human form, but that wasn’t what scared us. The condition of the cells were atrocious. The metal bars were rusted and coated in wolfsbane so strong that it hurt to breathe. The shackles that bound their hands and feet were dented and scuffed; the slightest movement would sometimes tear their flesh. The scent of blood, urine, and feces carried through the corridor. The thought of Jacqueline and Aviana going through that for what they did to me seems like a stretch. Maybe community service or s

~Brady~ Today has been rough. Morning practice went fine, but my mind is so heavy from everything that’s been going on. I hop in my shower and try to relax. Grant and I made amends, but I know he’s still upset with me. I get that she’s family, but I’m surprised he’s so protective of Lindsey. If our suspicions are right and Lindsey is my fated mate, it would make sense. Gammas are the sworn protectors of the luna and her cubs. I miss Lindsey. I could smell her last night when we got in and this morning when I left. I’m drawn to her like no one else. She’s constantly on my mind no matter how crazy she makes me. I just hope I can find a way to make her not feel threatened by me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to lash out like that ever again for fear of causing her pain. It also probably doesn’t help my mood that Jagger is coming to town. I feel tense, like he’s got ulterior motives. We became friends a few years ago when he and Walt visited our pack, but I wouldn’t call u

~Lindsey~ I wake up in a strange bed, the smell of fresh blueberry muffins filling the air. I stretch and head into the living area where I meet Aunt Cammie, Uncle Tom, Grant’s little brother, and Dad all visiting and having breakfast. “Morning sleepyhead! Feel like having a muffin?” Aunt Cammie smiles and goes to check on her second batch in the oven. “Sure. They smell delicious. Where’s Grant?” I ask. He seems to be the only one missing. “Morning practice. He should be here any minute. Zack put your feet down. Lindsey doesn’t want your stinky feet by her.” Zack complies but rolls his eyes once he sees his mom isn’t looking. I guess Grant wasn’t lying when he said Zack is going through his angsty phase right now. Uncle Tom and Dad are too busy talking to notice. “Thanks Zack. I’ve seen you around school. What grade are you in?” I decide to try to make conversation since he seems to hate my guts. He pulls out his phone and starts scrolling. “9th.” He sounds less than amus

~Brady~ Dad and I offer John a ride to the packhouse after shifter training. He seems like such a great guy. Conversation comes easily between the three of us; he and Dad talk about common interests. John makes a point to include me which is nice. “So I’m assuming you and Lindsey had a fight?” He asks suddenly, looking at me in the rear view mirror. Dad carries a smirk on his face. “Um yes sir. I’m truly sorry. I-“ “Brady, one thing you need to know about me: I know my daughter well. She’s been on edge since we got here, and I know she had a habit of telling Jagger off the second that he did something she didn’t like or agree with. If she overstepped you have every right to stand up for yourself.” “But I hurt her, sir.” I reply, pain flooding my body again. “Brady!” Dad yells from the front seat. “Hold on now. Lindsey is strong. She can stand up for herself. If she was seriously hurt she would have called me straight away. It was probably nothing more than a scuffle. You’l

~Lindsey~ Dad is quiet on the way to the packhouse. I still feel numb; not even able to bring my own things with me just makes me feel less like myself. Exhaustion threatens to overtake me as the hum of the car driving down the road lulls me to sleep. “Lindsey, wake up sweetheart.” Dad gently rubs my shoulder. “We made it to the packhouse.” I slowly open my eyes which still feel heavy. I get out of the car and stretch, my body still seeking rest. “Oh my sweet girl! Come on in!” Aunt Cammie meets me with a hug and ushers me in as it starts to rain. Dad follows us in from the car. “Are you alright? I know that had to be terrifying.” Aunt Cammie rubs my shoulder as she leads me to an elevator in the back of the packhouse that I didn’t know existed. She enters a passcode, and it opens. The three of us get in and ride up to the gamma floor. I heard the two of them talking, but my brain has shut off for the day. “Lindsey?” Dad asks. “You aunt asked what you want for dinner.” “I

~Lindsey~ We ate our dinner in near silence. After the episode I just had, the shock was still wearing off. My stomach was tied in knots as my mind replayed my dream over and over again. Those three words haunted my soul. “You’re all mine.” I’d rather die than be his, which may be my fate if h

~Lindsey~ I hear the front door open. “Dad is that you?” No response. “Dad?” I call out again. I slowly make my way around the wall that blocks the view from the kitchen to the front door. It’s wide open. “Dad?!” I call again, panic beginning to enter my voice. A hand covers my mouth

~Brady~ Dad and I head back for the end of training. We all usually go for a run and let our wolves have a moment to bond. Everyone has started to gather outside, just a few stragglers finishing up their matches. “Come. I want you to meet our newest pack member. He arrived last night.“ Dad say

~Brady~ I’m going to kill these two idiots. We come in the gym at 5 to see our dads and Alex, one of our head warriors, standing at the front. They rarely all show up at the same shifter training. Usually they divide up between the early session and the late session, which starts at 8pm. No ne
