I lay awake thinking about what could possibly have my dad so upset that he walked out of dinner without a single word. Mom always makes such a big deal about us eating together every night as a family. Sometimes it’s our only time together during the week. What’s more nerve wracking is the fact that she didn’t scold him, didn’t say a word. Mom has no problem putting Dad in his place. Ever. Which is quite entertaining when your dad’s job is bossing everyone around and running a pack of werewolves flawlessly. But the look she gave him? It’s got me restless tonight. The last time I saw that look in her eyes, we were attacked the very next day. I was only 10, but I remember it like yesterday. The rogues from the mountains attacked the south border. Somehow our Gamma found out as he was running from a neighboring pack and overheard some idiot talking about “Black Forest’s weak spot”. Let’s just say it wasn’t weak much longer, but we still lost three warriors. So now I’m staring at my ceiling, listening for anything. Because of my alpha blood, my wolf came a year early. I’m only 17, but I was stoked when I got my built in best friend last August. It’s hard to believe I’ve only known Knight for 4 months. It feels like he’s always been with me. “Our pack is strong. No one will harm us. If they try, they will face the consequences.” He tells me. “I know. I just hate thinking Mom is worried and Dad is in danger. Especially when I should be helping,” I tell him. “All in good time. We have many fights ahead.” Not sure if that’s supposed to reassure me, but it definitely doesn’t. Dad has been training me basically since I was born to be the best alpha I can be. Since Knight came along, there’s a lot more that I can do. I’ll have to take full responsibility for the pack by the time I’m 21, so I devote myself to whatever Dad assigns me to do. Right now, my biggest task is training all the younger warriors 21 and under. It’s honestly more fun than work since I enjoy training. Plus it’s a ton of fun to show off and teach some of these guys who the strongest is. I hear the door close from the stairwell and immediately go to my door to listen. We have the top floor of the pack house to ourselves. It honestly feels like a house of its own. Everything we could want is up here: living area, kitchen, balcony overlooking the property. “Our own oasis,” as my mom says. “Did they get here safely?” I hear my mom ask. “Yeah. John looked like shit. Not that I can blame him. I’m just surprised he left instead of ripping that bastard’s head off.” “Cam, you know that wasn’t an option. He made the right choice. They are safe now. Did they join tonight, or will that be tomorrow?” “We went ahead and took care of it. The daughter won’t be 18 till July. We will have her join after she gets her wolf.” “She’s still 17? My word. As if it couldn’t get any worse. That poor child. I’ll go by and check on them tomorrow.” “Just remember she’s still skittish. She sensed who I was and immediately shied away from me. I guess it just validates what we already knew.” “Poor child. When will John start work?” “I told him to take his time. We could really use his skills around here. I’ll never forget how quick he patched up Tom last year. I don’t know what we would have done if it wasn’t for him. Definitely would be down a Gamma.” “I know. Plus with Dr. Orion retiring next month, this couldn’t have come at a better time for us. Do you think White Fang will retaliate?” “Only time will tell. Let’s just hope this all blows over. We can always use the excuse that Laura and Cammie were sisters and this is just a way to let the girl know more about her mom. No need to worry any more tonight. Let’s go get some sleep.” I hear them walk towards the other end of the floor and shut the door. I sit on my floor, thinking about what I just heard. White Fang? The pack that neighbors our East border? What could possibly be going on in that tiny backwater place? I know my dad and Alpha Walt do not get along at all, but they’ve always kept the peace for the sake of the packs. No need to attack somebody over ego. I know Luna Avery died last week. Mom and Dad sent gifts out of respect. She was a great lady who sadly got chosen by a hothead jerk who thinks he’s better than everyone. Rumor has it he rejected his chosen mate for being “too weak”. It drove her crazy to the point that she had to be isolated for her own safety. He chose Luna Avery because she was young and pretty. Apparently that didn’t stop him from having a few side chicks as well. I heard he would cheat just to hurt Luna Avery if she stepped out of line or did something without his permission. There’s tons of allegations about White Fang and Alpha Walt that go around our pack, but Dad always tells me to judge someone based on what I know, not what I’ve heard. I plan to investigate some tomorrow. If I’m going to be the best alpha I can be, then I need to know any potential threats, and, more importantly, their weaknesses.~ Lindsey ~ Sunlight peeks through my window, waking me up. I must have finally dozed off sometime last night. I tossed and turned for what felt like hours. Dad saw right through me last night and refused to let me stay up watching TV, knowing I was planning an all nighter. The little sleep that I did get l did not include any more nightmares. I guess I should count that as a blessing. I head out of the bedroom and see Dad in khaki dress pants, brown dress shoes, a white button up, and a blue tie. “You look nice,” I tell Dad sleepily, as I wipe my eyes. “Oh good morning kiddo! Sorry if I woke you up. I didn’t make breakfast, sorry.” He comes around to give me a hug and a kiss on the crown of my head. “I just wanted to see you before you left. Did you leave any coffee?” I asked, a mix of hope and desperation in my voice. I need caffeine desperately. “Yeah I’ve only had one cup. I heard you last night, so I made a full pot. Did you get any rest?” The concern in his v
~ Brady ~ Mom has dinner ready by the time we arrive upstairs. She loves to cook, but if she’s busy she lets the omegas in the kitchen bring something up for us. She tells me all the time that a luna must be willing to do anything that she would ask someone else to do. I hope my luna will be as amazing as her. “Ew you two stink. Go shower off while I finish setting the table.” She scrunches up her nose as she fixes the tablecloth. We both hit the showers and come back a few minutes later to an absolute feast. Mom really outdid herself: pork chops, potatoes, green beans, corn, rolls, the whole nine yards. “Dessert should be ready by the time we finish eating,” she says as she walks over to set an alarm on the stove just in case. “It looks delicious Maci,” Dad says before giving her a kiss and pulling out her chair. “Thank you dear. Now fix your plates. We have a lot to discuss this evening.” Mom commands a room almost better than Dad does. We sit down and fix our plate
~Brady~I’m pretty sure my jaw dropped in shock. How would that even be possible? “Dad they would be able to communicate through the pack link or fight back at least. There’s no way he is trafficking wolves.” I’m trying to logically think despite my dad never spreading gossip. He doesn’t make accusations without evidence. “They take the girls before they’re 18 and get their wolves. Apparently Walt has been telling them that someone senses that they are going to be their mate or promise them a position as a luna or another high ranking mate.” “So what did they promise the girl that came here?” I asked. If it’s true, we might have earned the wrath of multiple packs. “Don’t know. She told her cousin that Walt found her mate and that he would pick her up within the week.” He almost looks like he’s in pain. Dad watched his mom be tortured once when the pack was attacked while Pops was away. He was only 5, but it made a lasting impact on him. He’s been a fierce protector of our she-wolv
~Lindsey~ We ate our dinner in near silence. After the episode I just had, the shock was still wearing off. My stomach was tied in knots as my mind replayed my dream over and over again. Those three words haunted my soul. “You’re all mine.” I’d rather die than be his, which may be my fate if he ever finds me. Dad had to go into work tomorrow to fill out some paperwork for his new job, so I’d be home alone again. This time, however, I’d do whatever it takes to stay awake. No dreams. No nightmares. I’m already tempted to stay up all night tonight. The thought of that black hair and those piercing grey eyes cutting into my very soul and trying to carve me into someone smaller, more obedient, more docile, shakes me to my core. May I never see that bastard again for as long as I live. And please let the moon goddess not be so cruel as to choose him as my mate. “Lin, do you need to talk about your dream? You’ve barely touched your food, which tells me you’re worried about someth
~Lindsey~ I hear the front door open. “Dad is that you?” No response. “Dad?” I call out again. I slowly make my way around the wall that blocks the view from the kitchen to the front door. It’s wide open. “Dad?!” I call again, panic beginning to enter my voice. A hand covers my mouth while another wraps around my waist. “Did you really think you could escape me?” a cruel, familiar voice whispers in my ear. “I’ve already taken care of your dad. Now you have no one. You belong to me.” I struggle as much as possible to no avail. He’s strong, much stronger than me. I twist, turn, wiggle. I try to bite him, kick him, pinch him. Nothing works. I continue my struggle, only to hear a sinister chuckle escape his lips. “Struggle all you want. You’re all mine Lindsey.” “No! NO!!!” I yell, continuing to fight against him. I scream with all my might. Suddenly I sit straight up, panting, looking into my father’s eyes. “Lindsey? Oh thank the goddess you’re ok!” Dad crash
~Brady~ Dad and I head back for the end of training. We all usually go for a run and let our wolves have a moment to bond. Everyone has started to gather outside, just a few stragglers finishing up their matches. “Come. I want you to meet our newest pack member. He arrived last night.“ Dad says through the mindlink. What the hell? He just drops that information on me like it’s nothing. Guess it’s time to play dumb. “Why did he join our pack? Where’s he from?” I ask immediately. No need to beat around the bush if I’m going to get information this easily. “White Fang. Some pack drama had been going on. He needed to get out, and we can always use more doctors. He asked for a quiet entry. Kinda wants to fly under the radar from what I hear. They want to have a fresh start.” “They?” “Yeah. He’s got a daughter about your age. Pretty little thing. Seemed kinda shy. I’ll expect you and the boys to be on your best behavior. She could probably use a friend. Sounds like she ma
