I lay awake thinking about what could possibly have my dad so upset that he walked out of dinner without a single word. Mom always makes such a big deal about us eating together every night as a family. Sometimes it’s our only time together during the week. What’s more nerve wracking is the fact that she didn’t scold him, didn’t say a word. Mom has no problem putting Dad in his place. Ever. Which is quite entertaining when your dad’s job is bossing everyone around and running a pack of werewolves flawlessly. But the look she gave him? It’s got me restless tonight. The last time I saw that look in her eyes, we were attacked the very next day. I was only 10, but I remember it like yesterday. The rogues from the mountains attacked the south border. Somehow our Gamma found out as he was running from a neighboring pack and overheard some idiot talking about “Black Forest’s weak spot”. Let’s just say it wasn’t weak much longer, but we still lost three warriors. So now I’m staring at my ceiling, listening for anything. Because of my alpha blood, my wolf came a year early. I’m only 17, but I was stoked when I got my built in best friend last August. It’s hard to believe I’ve only known Knight for 6 months. It feels like he’s always been with me. “Our pack is strong. No one will harm us. If they try, they will face the consequences.” He tells me. “I know. I just hate thinking Mom is worried and Dad is in danger. Especially when I should be helping,” I tell him. “All in good time. We have many fights ahead.” Not sure if that’s supposed to reassure me, but it definitely doesn’t. Dad has been training me basically since I was born to be the best alpha I can be. Since Knight came along, there’s a lot more that I can do. I’ll have to take full responsibility for the pack by the time I’m 21, so I devote myself to whatever Dad assigns me to do. Right now, my biggest task is training all the younger warriors 21 and under. It’s honestly more fun than work since I enjoy training. Plus it’s a ton of fun to show off and teach some of these guys who the strongest is. I hear the door close from the stairwell and immediately go to my door to listen. We have the top floor of the pack house to ourselves. It honestly feels like a house of its own. Everything we could want is up here: living area, kitchen, balcony overlooking the property. “Our own oasis,” as my mom says. “Did they get here safely?” I hear my mom ask. “Yeah. John looked like shit. Not that I can blame him. I’m just surprised he left instead of ripping that bastard’s head off.” “Cam, you know that wasn’t an option. He made the right choice. They are safe now. Did they join tonight, or will that be tomorrow?” “We went ahead and took care of it. The daughter won’t be 18 till July. We will have her join after she gets her wolf.” “She’s still 17? My word. As if it couldn’t get any worse. That poor child. I’ll go by and check on them tomorrow.” “Just remember she’s still skittish. She sensed who I was and immediately shied away from me. I guess it just validates what we already knew.” “Poor child. When will John start work?” “I told him to take his time. We could really use his skills around here. I’ll never forget how quick he patched up Tom last year. I don’t know what we would have done if it wasn’t for him. Definitely would be down a Gamma.” “I know. Plus with Dr. Orion retiring next month, this couldn’t have come at a better time for us. Do you think White Fang will retaliate?” “Only time will tell. Let’s just hope this all blows over. We can always use the excuse that Laura and Cammie were sisters and this is just a way to let the girl know more about her mom. No need to worry any more tonight. Let’s go get some sleep.” I hear them walk towards the other end of the floor and shut the door. I sit on my floor, thinking about what I just heard. White Fang? The pack that neighbors our East border? What could possibly be going on in that tiny backwater place? I know my dad and Alpha Walt do not get along at all, but they’ve always kept the peace for the sake of the packs. No need to attack somebody over ego. I know Luna Avery died last week. Mom and Dad sent gifts out of respect. She was a great lady who sadly got chosen by a hothead jerk who thinks he’s better than everyone. Rumor has it he rejected his chosen mate for being “too weak”. It drove her crazy to the point that she had to be isolated for her own safety. He chose Luna Avery because she was young and pretty. Apparently that didn’t stop him from having a few side chicks as well. I heard he would cheat just to hurt Luna Avery if she stepped out of line or did something without his permission. There’s tons of allegations about White Fang and Alpha Walt that go around our pack, but Dad always tells me to judge someone based on what I know, not what I’ve heard. I plan to investigate some tomorrow. If I’m going to be the best alpha I can be, then I need to know any potential threats, and, more importantly, their weaknesses.~Lindsey~“Hey girlie! You ready?” Callie’s voice rings down the hallway, excitement lacing her voice. My closest friends and family, the females at least, wait in the living room of the gamma floor. “Just a sec!” I call back. I run my hands over the fabric of my dress. It’s hard to believe that a few short months ago Brady claimed me as his mate. It’s even harder to believe that almost a year to the date, I came to Black Forest and met Brady and the rest of my friends. It seems like a small eternity has passed. Between planning my mate ceremony, school, and luna duties, I’ve been swamped. So far I’m enjoying college; it’s challenging but in a good way. I’m officially over all the event planning; after I heard how berserk Maci went, we all decided it was best for her to take a step back. I walk down the hall, my mermaid style white dress hugging my curves in the best way. When I step into the room, a collective gasp hushes the chatter. “Oh my goodness! Lindsey you look incredible
~Lindsey~Stunned is an understatement. I knew Brady would claim me. I knew he was ready to proclaim it to the world. I knew he would accept me as his mate. But I didn’t know it would be this soon. The surprise birthday party, the announcement that we’re fated mates, his acceptance of me. It just all felt overwhelming. My mind felt as if it was in a state of euphoria, like every best possible outcome was happening all at once. Regardless I knew there was only one thing I needed to do. “I, Lindsey Holder, accept you, Brady Black, future alpha of Black Forest, as my mate and my alpha.” I don’t know if I’ve ever seen Brady smile that big. He hugs my waist and spins me around. I giggle, taken by surprise but loving every second. “You accepted me.” Brady says giddily. I laugh. “Was there ever any doubt?” “A long time ago, yes.” He teases. “But not anymore.” I lean in, touching his forehead to mine. I suddenly hear my name from the crowd. That’s when I notice everyone is still chee
~Lindsey~“Dad! We’re going to be late!”I sigh in frustration. I’m the future Luna. I have to set an example. Instead my dad can’t find his keys. “Found them! They were in my medical bag. Probably dropped them in there when I was checking on Luna Maci. You ready?” He smiles warmly. He seems excited, which is odd. He usually doesn’t care for pack dinners. “Yeah. Let’s go.” We hurry out the door and into the car. He’s driving impossibly slow. I tap my fingers on my arm, willing him to go faster. “So when are you and Brady announcing the big news?” He asks. I notice the smug look on his face. What is with him tonight?“I don’t know yet. We’re going to talk about it after dinner.” I pull at my dress, now irritated that I let Callie talk me into wearing it. I’m going to look ridiculous. Everyone else will be so casually dressed. “You look beautiful, you know.” Dad leans over and nudges my arm. “I feel stupid. I think I’m going to sneak upstairs and change when we get there. Let me t
~Brady~“The caterers are here. Terri is helping them get set up in the kitchen. The florists are finishing up in the dining room, and the bakery just delivered the cake. Oh! And I need you to sign here.”Deanna hands me a clipboard to sign. She’s basically been my secretary all day, taking care of all the logistics. I wouldn’t have made it without her. “Fireworks? Why the hell did we spend five grand on fireworks?” I look at the paper in front of me. It’s already been paid; this is just acknowledgment that I received them. “Your mom had a vision, and it included polluting the air and explosives. I don’t know what to tell you.” Deanna shrugs. “They’re already getting set up. Trey is helping them out in the field behind the garden.” I sigh as I sign my name. “Ok. I guess everyone will enjoy it.”“Oh and you need to get upstairs. Only an hour until they get here. I’m headed up shortly. Just gotta pass the reins to Gina until Joie gets back.” Even though she’s been staying with us, J
~Lindsey~The day passes by slowly, but in the best way. Dad fixes the most amazing breakfast though he claims he hasn’t done anything unusual. He thinks it’s just my enhanced senses kicking in. I guess there may be some truth to that. My phone begins to blow up with birthday wishes from all my friends and family. Everyone is eager to know if I got my wolf. Two people, however, already know the answer. A new group text appears. I see Brady, Colton, and Grant’s names at the top. “We feel it. You two are mates!” Colton texts. “Congrats you guys! When are we breaking the good news?” Grant adds in. I laugh at my phone. I suppose everyone already knows we’re chosen mates. I don’t guess it makes much difference to anyone but us now that we know we’re also fated mates. “No need to rush. All in good time.” I respond. “Why you hiding it?” Colton seems unhappy with my reply. “I’m not! We just haven’t talked about it yet. I can come early tonight and we can discuss then.” I’m supposed t
~Brady~ Dad and I are running borders at the first sign of sun. I’ve got a busy day ahead, and so does he. I’m in charge of Lindsey’s birthday and engagement party. I have some of the best help in the world, but one of those people can no longer be my mother. Dad’s job all day is to keep her on the equivalent of house arrest on the alpha floor. She’s not to interfere in any way after yesterday. Right now, Uncle Dave and Tom are patrolling her, the only two capable of defying her commands. Running the border lines is necessary; our scent protects our pack. Rogues are less likely to invade if they know an alpha is active. We see Jagger and Lucy running their borders this morning and nod in acknowledgment in passing. Their mating ceremony will be held soon; we received an invitation earlier in the week. Apparently Willow is expecting a pup already. They found out this week as well. I finally got around to telling Lindsey, who was over the moon with excitement. She insisted that
~Lindsey~ I hear a knock on the door and hear Dad go to answer. “Morning Brady! Come on in.” He says warmly. I smile quietly to myself, pleased that my dad and Brady get along so well. “Thanks John. Busy day ahead?” I ask. “Yeah. Got a surgery scheduled this morning. Nothing major. Some ome
~Lindsey~ After breakfast, Dad and I prepared to head out to buy some essentials. I open the door and almost run into an enormous man. I gasp and take two steps back, almost falling into my dad. “Lin, it’s ok! This is Mr. Matt. He’s here to make sure we’re safe. I’m sorry. I completely forgot t
~Brady~ My alarm goes off at 6, but I didn’t sleep at all; too much was on my mind. I go downstairs to the kitchen to grab coffee and a granola bar before I begin my walk to the gym. I mind link Colton and Grant, my future beta and gamma. “We have some things to discuss today. Plan on a run to
~Lindsey~ “Lin, wake up. We need to go.” I slowly open my eyes as my dad’s voice pulls me from sleep. I glance over at my clock, thinking it’s way too dark for 6AM. “Dad, it’s 2 in the morning. Why are you waking me up?” I say groggily. “Because we’re getting out of here. Tonight.” I loo
