~Brady~

My alarm goes off at 6, but I didn’t sleep at all; too much was on my mind. I go downstairs to the kitchen to grab coffee and a granola bar before I begin my walk to the gym. I mind link Colton and Grant, my future beta and gamma.

“We have some things to discuss today. Plan on a run to the packhouse after training.”

“Ugh dude stop being such a hard ass. Can’t we take a day off every now and then?” Grant lazily says.

“Sounds like you’ve had a long night. Who was it? Lacey or Deanna?” Colton mocks. Grant is definitely a ladies man. Not saying we don’t all enjoy a good roll in the hay. Grant just indulges the most.

“Neither. I had a strange feeling in the middle of the night. I couldn’t shake it until well after 4. Now this morning Dad is gone. So something is definitely up. Spill the beans, Almighty Alpha.”

That got my attention. Grant never loses a night of sleep. An entire construction site couldn’t keep him awake. And stress? I’m surprised the guy even knows the meaning of the word: he’s the personification of don’t worry, be happy. Something is definitely going on.

“Yeah my dad just got in about half an hour ago. You really gonna make us wait a whole hour to find out what’s going on?”

“Colton see if you can get any info from Uncle Dave. Grant, who was the doctor from White Fang that helped your dad after that rogue attack last year?”

“I don’t know. Johnathan something. Holder maybe? What does that have to do with anything?”

“Hopefully I can tell you the answer to that soon. I’ll be at the gym in five. Don’t be late. We need to set an example.” I close the link and take a long sip of coffee. The air smells different today. Sweeter, like my mom’s flower garden, even though it’s in the middle of February. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but my entire being seems to relax just a little.

Colton arrives five minutes before 7, though Grant comes strolling in with seconds to spare, looking like absolute shit.

“Dude you weren’t kidding. You look like you’ve been hit by a bus.” Colton mindlinks the both of us.

“Haha very funny asshole. I look better than you any day of the week.

“Time to get serious guys. We can talk about how ugly you both are later.” I quip back before turning my attention to the warriors.

Everyone here is either in high school or college. People with their wolves have additional training with my dad after school, but we believe it’s just as important to train our human forms as it is to train our wolves.

“Get in five laps then start with weights. At 7:30 we pair up. Go!” I shout, and everyone is off. Anyone foolish enough not to stretch beforehand, like Grant, is shit out of luck.

After we get individual training done, I announce pairs. Everyone finds their partner, meanwhile my team and I observe and give feedback until it’s time for a break.

Much to my dismay, my fan club fawns over me when I pair up with Colton. He’s weaker than me but just barely. Jaqueline, the most annoying she wolf on the planet, saunters up to me and whispers “good luck, my alpha,” before rejoining her group of girls. She’s convinced when she gets her wolf in two months that we will be mates. I pray the Moon Goddess isn’t that cruel. You hook up with someone one time in a drunken haze, and now they think they own you.

I block out all the negative thoughts and focus on beating Colton. He knows my weaknesses and strengths better than anyone. Grant and Trey, my future head warrior, stand on either side of us, waiting to critique our match.

We’re off, and Colton can feel my distraction, so he goes for a right hook first to try and knock me on my ass. Thankfully I snap out of it just in time and dodge his fist. I use his momentum against him and go for a rib shot. I make contact, but he managed to move just enough that the blow is not as effective as I anticipated. He recovers and swings behind me, ready to attack.

We go at it full force, him hitting me, me hitting him until time is called. We’re both pouring sweat and panting by the time we’re done. We shake hands, and I tell everyone to get back to work.

“Something’s got you distracted, Brady. You good?” Trey notices everything, granted he’s also three years older than us, so he picks up on cues quickly. Thankfully he’s smart enough to wait till everyone has walked off. There’s only about 10 minutes left in training, so it’s not a huge deal if I miss a few spars.

“Yeah. Just got some stuff on my mind. You know anything about some new pack members?” I ask. Dad has started letting Trey take over some of the border controls, but Trey asked to wait until I became alpha to take over full time.

“Damn. Didn’t realize Alpha was letting that be known yet. Yeah they arrived late last night. Sounds like a fugitive situation. From what I gathered the guy’s daughter was in some serious trouble. I didn’t press. Sounded kinda personal. I was just told to keep an eye out for any warriors from White Fang, except for their beta. He’s the one who helped get them out. Not sure what all is going on there.”

“Hmm. Dad didn’t tell me anything yet. I noticed he got in late last night and overheard him talking to Mom. Thanks man. I really owe you one. And don’t worry. I didn’t hear anything from you.”

I see the relief flood over Trey’s face at my last statement. Dad believes in keeping tight lips though I usually get clued in on most things now. Maybe he’ll tell me at dinner tonight.

Regardless, my curiosity is officially piqued. I can’t help but wonder what could possibly be going on in White Fang, and why on earth my dad chose to get involved.

~Brady~ I can’t believe what I just heard. What kind of sick depraved bastard allows children to find torture cells, beats his own pack members, and doesn’t have holding cells? And why does Lindsey think I would do that to anyone? I feel so much pain when I think about what she suffered. She’s so strong; most would have caved in or given up by now. I can’t help growing fonder for her. “Why is she so afraid of us?” Knight pouts in my head. I wish I could answer him. If I could go back in time, I wouldn’t hesitate to do it over again I’d let her yell at me a million times over. Anything to have her trust back. “I can’t believe she thinks I would ever do that to her.” I tell Grant when he comes into the room. “I figured you heard. This alpha must be a fucking psycho.” He says quietly. I’ve never seen Grant so serious before. I think he realizes just how bad Lindsey has had it. “I overheard bits and pieces. They had torture cells in White Fang? Is that not illegal?

~Lindsey~ I watch as Aviana and Jacqueline get hauled away, a small part of me hurting for them. I shiver, hoping they will make it out alive. I had snuck to the cells before in White Fang when Jagger and I were kids. There had been some rogue wolves that attacked a family on the border of the pack; thankfully the family survived, but the pup was left with a bad scar. Dad spent hours trying to help heal the little one; he was only four years old at the time. The rogues looked rough even in human form, but that wasn’t what scared us. The condition of the cells were atrocious. The metal bars were rusted and coated in wolfsbane so strong that it hurt to breathe. The shackles that bound their hands and feet were dented and scuffed; the slightest movement would sometimes tear their flesh. The scent of blood, urine, and feces carried through the corridor. The thought of Jacqueline and Aviana going through that for what they did to me seems like a stretch. Maybe community service or s

~Brady~ Today has been rough. Morning practice went fine, but my mind is so heavy from everything that’s been going on. I hop in my shower and try to relax. Grant and I made amends, but I know he’s still upset with me. I get that she’s family, but I’m surprised he’s so protective of Lindsey. If our suspicions are right and Lindsey is my fated mate, it would make sense. Gammas are the sworn protectors of the luna and her cubs. I miss Lindsey. I could smell her last night when we got in and this morning when I left. I’m drawn to her like no one else. She’s constantly on my mind no matter how crazy she makes me. I just hope I can find a way to make her not feel threatened by me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to lash out like that ever again for fear of causing her pain. It also probably doesn’t help my mood that Jagger is coming to town. I feel tense, like he’s got ulterior motives. We became friends a few years ago when he and Walt visited our pack, but I wouldn’t call u

~Lindsey~ I wake up in a strange bed, the smell of fresh blueberry muffins filling the air. I stretch and head into the living area where I meet Aunt Cammie, Uncle Tom, Grant’s little brother, and Dad all visiting and having breakfast. “Morning sleepyhead! Feel like having a muffin?” Aunt Cammie smiles and goes to check on her second batch in the oven. “Sure. They smell delicious. Where’s Grant?” I ask. He seems to be the only one missing. “Morning practice. He should be here any minute. Zack put your feet down. Lindsey doesn’t want your stinky feet by her.” Zack complies but rolls his eyes once he sees his mom isn’t looking. I guess Grant wasn’t lying when he said Zack is going through his angsty phase right now. Uncle Tom and Dad are too busy talking to notice. “Thanks Zack. I’ve seen you around school. What grade are you in?” I decide to try to make conversation since he seems to hate my guts. He pulls out his phone and starts scrolling. “9th.” He sounds less than amus

~Brady~ Dad and I offer John a ride to the packhouse after shifter training. He seems like such a great guy. Conversation comes easily between the three of us; he and Dad talk about common interests. John makes a point to include me which is nice. “So I’m assuming you and Lindsey had a fight?” He asks suddenly, looking at me in the rear view mirror. Dad carries a smirk on his face. “Um yes sir. I’m truly sorry. I-“ “Brady, one thing you need to know about me: I know my daughter well. She’s been on edge since we got here, and I know she had a habit of telling Jagger off the second that he did something she didn’t like or agree with. If she overstepped you have every right to stand up for yourself.” “But I hurt her, sir.” I reply, pain flooding my body again. “Brady!” Dad yells from the front seat. “Hold on now. Lindsey is strong. She can stand up for herself. If she was seriously hurt she would have called me straight away. It was probably nothing more than a scuffle. You’l

~Lindsey~ Dad is quiet on the way to the packhouse. I still feel numb; not even able to bring my own things with me just makes me feel less like myself. Exhaustion threatens to overtake me as the hum of the car driving down the road lulls me to sleep. “Lindsey, wake up sweetheart.” Dad gently rubs my shoulder. “We made it to the packhouse.” I slowly open my eyes which still feel heavy. I get out of the car and stretch, my body still seeking rest. “Oh my sweet girl! Come on in!” Aunt Cammie meets me with a hug and ushers me in as it starts to rain. Dad follows us in from the car. “Are you alright? I know that had to be terrifying.” Aunt Cammie rubs my shoulder as she leads me to an elevator in the back of the packhouse that I didn’t know existed. She enters a passcode, and it opens. The three of us get in and ride up to the gamma floor. I heard the two of them talking, but my brain has shut off for the day. “Lindsey?” Dad asks. “You aunt asked what you want for dinner.” “I

~Lindsey~ I walk down the pavement and open the truck door. “Good morning!” I say with a smile. “Thanks again for picking me up, Mr. Matt. Hi, I’m Lindsey!” I wave to the girl in the middle seat, who I am assuming is Callie. “Hi, I’m Callie. You wouldn’t happen to be this happy every morning

~ Brady ~ Today has felt like a year. I woke up, went to non shifter training, got hit on by Jacqueline and her squad AGAIN, and now I’m sitting in pack history class watching the clock. ~ Lindsey ~ We drive to the school, which is conveniently only about ten minutes from home. “That was quick. Is Black Forest smaller than White Fang?” I ask. “It’s actually larger. They rebuilt this school in the center of the pack when Alpha Cameron met Luna Maci. She wanted a nice place fo

~ Lindsey ~ Sunlight peeks through my window, waking me up. I must have finally dozed off sometime last night. I tossed and turned for what felt like hours. Dad saw right through me last night and refused to let me stay up watching TV, knowing I was planning an all nighter. The little sleep th
