The moment Sophia heard that little girl’s angry but also very cute request, she was first stunned and then almost laughed out.
Apparently, her hypocritical young boss had been not only cheating on his own wife, but also pestering another woman shamelessly. The woman’s daughter was extremely dissatisfied with him. But he deeply lacked self-knowledge, and had already flattered himself as the little girl’s father.
Damn! Men, when would they learn that they are really not that charming?!
Sophia shook her head, suddenly felt less nervous. She cleared her throat, and then spoke to the little girl softly, “Thanks for calling, honey. But I think it’s better for you to tell Mr. Lanton in person.” There was no way she was going to tell her boss that he was disliked and rejected by a very cute little girl.
Angela nodded her head at the other side of the phone and said, “Okay.” Sophia then quickly transferred the phone call to Vincent’s personal cell phone.
In the ward, Vincent felt his heart skip a beat when he saw the unknown caller ID. He was kind of bewildered about what to say to that little girl, but his hand had already picked up the call before he could figure it out.
“Hello,” he said to the microphone nervously, feeling dry in his throat.
Angela hesitated before she spoke at the other side of the phone. Emotionally, she still liked her father and wanted to be with him, but she didn’t want her mom to be sad anymore.
She thought for a while, and then asked, “Could you stay away from mommy right now?”
It was such an unexpected request and was totally irrelevant to him. Vincent couldn’t help but smile, and then asked, “Why that, sweetie? Why do you want me to stay away from your mommy?”
“Because you broke her heart,” Angela explained on the other side of the phone, feeling disappointed and also a little bit angry, “When Mom was pregnant with me, you left and promised you’d come back, but you never did. Now Mommy is angry with you. She will cry if she sees you.”
“I don’t want Mommy to cry,” she added.
Vincent felt his heart become soft. Angela sounded to be such a sweet little girl. It made him like her even more and feel genuinely sorry for what happened to the mother and daughter.
“I am so sorry for that,” he said to the little girl, and then promised, knowing he was doing the wrong thing but couldn’t help himself, “I promise I won’t go near your mother,” he said.
Angela then nodded her head at the other side of the phone. She had already achieved her aim today, but somehow, she still felt unsatisfied.
She asked after a few moments, “Why did you leave, Daddy?” and then explained, “Five years ago, when mommy was pregnant with me, she needed you. Why did you leave her alone?”
Vincent halted his breath. The little girl was five years old, the same age as Charlie. It was such a coincidence. Maybe that was the reason why she mistook him for her father. And it made it so easy for him to lie to the little girl, though he knew he shouldn’t.
“Daddy didn’t leave, sweetie,” he said, feeling pathetic about himself but unable to stop, “Five years ago, Daddy’s father, your grandfather, passed away. Daddy had to come back home to take care of …things. But then Daddy got injured and went into a coma for four years. I had just woken up about one year ago. I am so sorry I didn’t come back to you and your mother.”
It was such a good explanation and Angela knew he wasn’t lying. She felt relieved a little, and then asked, “Then why didn’t you come back after you woke up? Mommy has been waiting for you the whole time. She cries because of it.”
It made Vincent feel so guilty for lying to the little girl. But he couldn’t stop now as he had already admitted to being the little girl’s dad. To be honest, he had absolutely no clue why he did that. But it felt wrong to do it the opposite way.
“Because Daddy lost his memories, sweetie,” he said, lying but also telling the truth at the same time, “Daddy got injured really badly. After I woke up, I lost the most important memories and forgot about the person I truly loved. I can’t remember how we met, why we fell in love, and I can’t remember how to make her happy again. I am … so sorry,” he said, to himself, but also to his mate and Charlie.
Angela went into silence this time. She knew by her gift that her father wasn’t lying. And she felt that her mother might accept that explanation.
She felt cheered up a little, and then asked, “If you got your memories back, then you will come back to Mommy and apologize to her, right?”
Vincent couldn’t help but curl up his lips. The answer was a big “NO”, as it was impossible for him to have any memories of the little girl’s mom. But there was no need to hurt the little girl’s feelings.
He then replied, “Yes, of course”, knowing he was being extremely irresponsible, but still couldn’t help it. “If someday I remember your mother, I will go back to you guys and apologize,” he said.
Angela then smiled. She now felt happy. All of a sudden, she saw the hope of getting her mom and dad back together. Only she couldn’t do it on her own. It was a bit difficult for her to get her father’s memories back.
She thought for a while, and then asked, “Can I meet my brother, Daddy?”
Vincent was stunned. Charlie jumped into his head the moment he heard the little girl’s request. But it was impossible for Angela to know he had a son about the same age as her. Thus, he softened his voice and asked curiously, “What brother are we talking about, sweetie?”
Angela then replied. “The little boy who is living with you,” she said, and then added, “He is the same age as me because we were born on the same day.”
Vincent couldn’t help but frown. It was so bizarre. He knew some wolves may have special gifts, but it happened very rarely. And he had never heard that there would be any connection between two wolves who were born on the same day.
He asked again, “When is your birthday?”
Angela replied, “December 24th.”
It was on Christmas Eve, exactly the same day as Charlie. Vincent couldn’t help but ask again, “Why do you say he is your brother, sweetie? Have you met him before?”
“Yes,” Angela nodded her head. Lena had never told her that she had an older brother, but the little girl knew it from the day she was born, because she was a wolf, and because they were twins.
“We were born on the same day, but someone took him away from Mommy, and I smelt his smell from your clothes,” she explained and then asked, “Will you let me meet him, Daddy? I need to meet him.”
Vincent felt his blood turn cold. Now he finally knew why the little girl mistook him as her father. It wasn’t because of his smell, but because of Charlie.
Angela somehow mistook Charlie for her twin brother. She then mistook him, Charlie’s father, as her own father.
It sounded so cruel, and made Vincent feel sad and angry.
He couldn’t believe someone would take a child away from its mother. And it made him feel really sorry for Angela.
“I am so sorry to hear that, sweetheart,” he said, but hesitated. Honestly, he was willing to do literally anything to make the little girl happy, but Charlie was different.
The boy had never left the house even once ever since he came to America, and he never played or talked with his peers either. It would be really difficult to persuade Charlie to meet a strange girl. Besides, Vincent was worried that Angela might get upset once she found out Charlie wasn’t her twin brother.
He thought for a while, and then said, “I am sorry, sweetie, but I don’t think-”
“But you said you loved me!” Angela interrupted him. She knew her father was going to reject her and she felt a bit angry because Charlie was her twin brother. Nothing in the world should stop them from seeing each other.
“Why won’t you let me meet my brother?” she asked, getting upset also. “You are being a really bad daddy. I want to meet my brother. He needs me,” she insisted.
Vincent couldn’t help but sigh. He now felt a headache again. Since he had already admitted to being the little girl’s dad, there was really not any suitable excuse for him to stop Angela from meeting Charlie.
He knew that and he could find no ground to refute that. Thus, he conceded after a while, but with worry.
“Fine,” he agreed, and then added, “I will try to talk to Charlie to let him meet you. But if he refuses, there’s nothing I can do.”
Angela instantly smiled at the other side of the phone. She knew her brother would never refuse. She quickly nodded her head and then said, “Okay! But don’t forget to tell him Mommy and I love him!”
Vincent couldn’t help but smile. He felt uncomfortable talking with Charlie or taking the boy out to meet someone, but eventually, he would have to try it. Now Talia was gone, it was totally his responsibility to take care of the boy, and Charlie might need a little girl like Angela to be his friend.
He said “Sure”, and then asked, “When and where do you want to meet him? We can’t meet without your mother knowing it. It isn’t right.”
Angela quickly answered, “We can meet at the park during the day. I will bring my nanny. You bring my brother. We can meet there by accident, then Mom won’t be angry.” She had planned it all out the moment she heard that her father lost his memories.
Vincent couldn’t help but smile again. The little girl was so smart. It was really difficult not to like her.
“Alright then,” he agreed, and then asked, “The day after tomorrow is Sunday. Will you be free in the afternoon?”
Angela quickly nodded her head and said "Yes". They then made the appointment.
Before Vincent hung up the phone, Angela reminded him again, “Please remember to tell him we love him, and please remember to tell him I am his sister.”
Vincent smiled and said, “I promise.”
Angela then said “Bye-bye” to her father and hung up the phone.
Vincent had no idea why he did that. It was the first day he came back to work. He didn’t want anyone to know, so he took a taxi and showed up at noon. Meeting Lena was purely accidental. He had never expected to see this mysterious green-eyed woman again. During the past few days, he didn’t even allow himself to think about her. He was now this crappy sl/ash crazy man who had just scared his own “wife” away from home and had just insanely “adopted” an illegal daughter. Lucky for him, Charlie started to communicate with him recently under Angela’s influence. It just felt wrong to think about another woman at such a moment. What sort of man does that anyway? Not only wolves, even humans aren’t allowed to chase their partners away by threatening to kill them, and then start being happy with another woman. No matter what, Talia was still his mate. It made Vincent feel guilty even thinking of the fountain he saw Lena for the first time. Not to mention the insane pleasure and
Lena used all her strength to pretend casual and listened quietly. Sophia then shrugged her shoulders, and said, “Not that my boss is any better than his wife. He is … unique too. Last winter, I overheard his brother urge him to send the boy, Charlie, I think, to some doctor in LA. Apparently, the boy had some problems. I heard Samuel say he hadn’t spoken one word since he was born…”Lena felt someone had just ripped open her throat. She couldn’t feel her breath anymore, and her head went dizzy, even Sophia’s voice became distant. She felt she was about to faint or explode, but she didn’t. Because she knew she had to stick here to listen to what they had done to her poor child.Sophia didn’t notice that. She was too excited about the gossip she was about to share. Lena started to pinch her thighs under the table to keep herself from storming out or screaming, cursing those two flagitious bastards who stole her child. And she heard Sophia saying:“But guess what? My boss refused,” the
Lena’s sleep had gotten better recently. The day Angela came back from the park, she brought a toy teddy bear with her, and then handed it to Lena. “It’s a gift from Lucas, Mommy. Lia hasn’t grown strong enough. The bear will protect you in the replacement of her,” the little girl said with seriousness in her beautiful green eyes. Lena took the bear and said “Thanks” to her little angel. Lia was the name of Angela’s toy wolf. Lena always felt a bit odd that Angela named the wolf a girl’s name. At night, Lena placed the bear on the nightstand before she went to sleep. Normally, she wouldn’t take gifts from strangers into her bedroom, but that bear gave her a different feeling. Maybe because it came from a boy who had the same name as her son. Whenever Lena saw that bear, she felt it was incredibly endearing. That night Lena magically didn’t have any nightmares and had a really good rest. She got up early the next day to send Angela to her new kindergarten, and then went t
Outside the park near Lena’s apartment, Vincent had just stopped the car in the parking lot. It wasn’t a pleasant drive considering there was a weird boy who refused to speak, sitting in the backseat. Surely, it saved Vincent’s trouble of trying awkward conversations. Still, Vincent felt uncomfortable being under the same roof with his son, who was practically a stranger to him. He held his breath the whole time, and finally felt relieved a little when the park popped into his anxious eyes. After parking the car, he got off first and then walked around to the backseat to open the door for Charlie. The boy had been sitting there quietly all the time, holding that small teddy bear in between his hands. After Vincent pulled open the door, he raised his head and stared at his father’s face. It somehow made Vincent feel restless again. He cleared his throat with a cough and then said, “Get out.” His voice was harsh, even rude due to his nervousness. The boy didn’t get scared.
Lena felt really guilty for scaring her little daughter. On the same night of that afternoon where she repeated that nightmare about Talia and Vincent, right after she tucked Angela in as always, the little girl suddenly said “Wait, Mommy!” and then passed Lena her favorite toy wolf. “It will protect you in bad dreams,” the little girl said with innocent assurance sparkling in her beautiful green eyes. Lena smiled, but actually felt like crying. She took the toy wolf and said “Thank you, sweetheart”, and then kissed the little girl’s forehead, whispered “Good night” before she went out of the bedroom and closed the door. Outside, the living room was kind of dark, and lonely under the dim orange light from the floor lamp beside the sofa. Lena turned off the lamp first, and then went back to her own bedroom with that toy wolf in her hand. She kissed the toy wolf and put it beside her pillow before she went to sleep. It kind of worked. Lena had some real rest that night. Sh
It was a good day. The weather was sunny, and the wind was soft, very suitable for an outing. When Vincent reached the house, the first thing he saw was Charlie standing on the lawn in front of the house, playing catch ball with Kelly. The boy saw him at the same time. He instantly froze and dropped the ball while the car was still approaching. Kelly noticed it. She turned her head and then saw Vincent too. She then quickly walked to Charlie and held the little boy’s hand. She knew the boy was kind of afraid of his father.Vincent noticed Charlie’s motion from inside the car. A burning torrent of guilt flashed across his heart, but was soon replaced by the nervousness of speaking to the boy.He stopped the car on the road beside the lawn, and then got off with the teddy bear.Kelly gave him a big grin when she saw the young master of this strange family for the second time.“Hello, Mr. Lanton,” she said with her distinguishing, cheerful, light voice, “Today is a very nice day!”Vincen
