Mary Ann’s POV

“Welcome home, niece.”

The voice came from the glowing passage behind me.

Warm.

Calm.

Familiar enough to pull me backward through years.

For one terrible second, I was no longer inside the ruins of Nightveil. I was a frightened academy student standing outside a lecture hall with tears burning my eyes while other students laughed at my body.

Mary Ann’s POV “Welcome home, niece.” The voice came from the glowing passage behind me. Warm. Calm. Familiar enough to pull me backward through years. For one terrible second, I was no longer inside the ruins of Nightveil. I was a frightened academy student standing outside a lecture hall with tears burning my eyes while other students laughed at my body. Master Vale had appeared beside me then. He had offered me a handkerchief. He had told me their cruelty could not change the worth of my blood. I had believed he was kind. Now he stepped from the darkness dressed as the Regent of Nightveil. Cassius looked older than the instructor I remembered. More grey ran through his dark hair, and new lines marked the corners of his eyes. His beard was trimmed carefully, hiding part of the scar beneath his chin but not enough to make me doubt him. He wore a long black coat embroidered with silver crescents. A narrow crown rose across the front of his c

Mary Ann’s POV Nightveil territory began where the mountain trees stopped growing. One moment, the old pass was surrounded by thick pine and tangled undergrowth. The next, the forest opened into a stretch of black stone, dry grass, and dead trees twisted toward the sky. No birds called. No insects moved beneath the rocks. Even the wind seemed to disappear. I stood at the entrance of the mountain pass with Modric beside me, Kylian behind us, and six carefully selected warriors spread across the narrow path. Two were from Mooncrest, two from Ironclaw, and two belonged to Frostfang. Lucian had remained outside the ruins to command the northern blockade, while Darius held Ironclaw in Modric’s absence. The decoy carriage had already begun its approach toward the southern gate. From a distance, Frostfang magic made a woman appear behind its dark curtains. She wore my cloak, my hairstyle, and enough of my shape to fool watchers from the cliffs. Cassius would k

Modric’s POV “Then I will accompany you, even if it costs me Ironclaw’s throne.” Mary Ann stared at me across the council table. For several seconds, no one spoke. Kylian stood beside the war map with one hand resting on the western route into Nightveil. Lucian watched from the opposite side of the room, his expression unreadable. Marek remained near the sealed door with Cassius’s ultimatum still lying beneath his investigation cloth. The room was full of commanders. Yet the argument belonged only to Mary Ann and me. “You cannot leave Ironclaw during an invasion,” she said. “I can.” “You are the Alpha.” “Yes.” “The pack needs you here.” “The pack needs command. Kylian can provide it.” Kylian lifted his head. “I appreciate being volunteered again.” “You are Beta,” I said. “I know.” “And Darius can command the military units with you.” Mary Ann’s expression hardened. “Darius is still recovering from poison.” “He is recover

Mary Ann’s POV The letter remained open on the council table. Come to me willingly, niece, or Ironclaw burns by sunrise. Below the threat, Cassius had written the location. The abandoned royal ruins of Nightveil. He wanted me to meet him where his pack had fallen. Where my mother had lost her family. Where the ancient throne supposedly waited beneath the earth for my blood. A second line had been written beneath the first. Surrender yourself, and my army withdraws before dawn. Refuse, and every village between the eastern valley and the Volkov gates will become ash. Modric read the message over my shoulder. “No.” The refusal came before I had finished reading the final word. I looked toward him. “You do not even know what I was going to say.” “Yes, I do.” His expression was hard, but fear moved through the bond. “You are considering it.” The accusation irritated me because it was true. Outside the protected council room, Ironclaw

Mary Ann’s POV “I met my uncle years ago under another name at the Elite Alpha Academy.” The words left my mouth, but they did not feel real. Modric stood beside the council table, staring at the old Nightveil portrait in my hand. The image showed my mother and Cassius as children, but all I could see was the man he had become. Master Vale. That was what the students called him. Not Professor Cael Vane. Not Cassius Vale. Master Vale. He had taught political history and inter-pack leadership during my final years at the academy. He was not a permanent instructor. He arrived for several weeks each term, delivered lectures to the Alpha-born students, then disappeared again. No one questioned it. The Elite Alpha Academy was always filled with visiting commanders, council advisers, and specialists from distant territories. A man appearing for a month and leaving afterward had seemed normal. Now I understood that nothing about him had been normal.

Mary Ann’s POV The pack house was locked down before the dead Nightveil warrior’s body became cold. Every gate was sealed. Every servant was ordered to remain in the wing where they had been found. Guards blocked the corridors between the council rooms, infirmary, kitchens, servant quarters, and family chambers. No one entered or left without written authorization from Modric, Kylian, or me. Even the elders were confined. Some protested immediately. Gregor’s allies called it an abuse of Alpha authority. Others demanded to know why respected council members were being treated like criminals while an army remained inside Ironclaw territory. Modric gave them one answer. “The enemy is already inside the pack.” That silenced most of them. Not all. I stood inside the central hall while Marek divided investigators into teams. Names were recorded. Keys were collected. Every guard’s location during the village attack was being compared with the official du
