ALPHA’S REBORN MATE

CHAPTER 10

AIDEN

I went to the daycare center where Damian had told me she would be and I found her there, feeding a pup whom she placed gently on her laps.

I stood, stunned and in awe of her radiance. She looked like a goddess, her beauty reflected like the sun on glass and almost blinded me.

Forgive my exaggeration, but that was how she made me feel. I never really noticed how beautiful she was, na we paid much attention, but tonight, she attracted me like a magnet. Was it because she was almost eighteen now? Did that mean something, perhaps that she would be my mate?

I prayed that was the case because I could already feel a connection stronger than before between us both.

Athena’s smile was genuine as she played with the pup in her arms. It made my mind wander, made me begin to picture her as my mate, my wife, leading the pack beside me and bearing my child, our own little pup.

She would make a wonderful mother, I thought and this thought caused a smile to tug on my lip and warm my heart. A contented smile just like the one she had on her face.

We would have a happy life and I’m ready to do whatever it takes to ensure that

But all this was possible only if she accepts me, If we accept each other.

“You’re a monster!” That accusation filled with so much hate and anger was a huge blow to me. Her words resounded in my mind even after she had said it.

My eyes furrowed and I seemed to be in physical pain because of what she had just said. She had been accusing me all morning of things I didn’t know about.

She had said I hurt her, which to the best of my knowledge I had never done, and now she was calling me a monster! Where was these accusations coming from? Why would she use that term when I had been nothing but good to her?

“Explain.” I ordered but tried to control the tone of my voice so she wouldn’t add more unsavory names to the one she had called me already. I tried not to demand it, but to convince her instead.

“Make me understand Athena.” I pleaded this time, I missed the Athena I knew and couldn’t wait to get her back, to go back to the way things were.

However, she said nothing to me, not a single word in her defense, or to make me understand where I had gone wrong. She left me hanging and it frustrated me that I couldn’t do anything about it.

Her silent treatment continued till nightfall and by now, I was near crazy.

I sipped whiskey from a glass and kept glancing at the clock ever so often, counting the seconds and minutes. It was half past eleven, thirty mi items before midnight, half an hour to Athena’s birthday and I was just sitting in my room.

I looked at the present I had wrapped up for her laying on my bed. I had planned to surprise her with a cake and a bouquet. I had everything all planned out, but now I wasn’t so sure how things were going to turn out anymore.

If I didn’t see her, I wouldn’t be able to confirm if she was my mate or not. Would she accept me now even if she was?

Her family did not even understand why she was acting this way towards me. Everyone else was just as confused.

I took another sip from my glass and continued looking at the clock until I finished the second glass. I couldn’t bear to sit there anymore. What do I do?

I stood up, empty glass in hand and contemplating if I should pour myself a third glass and just drink the night away or if I should go in search of her and convince her to talk to me. I wanted to be drunk, but I didn’t want it either because Athena hated seeing me drunk. It would make her more upset and she wouldn’t listen to me.

So I opted for the better option. I had to go to her, talk to her and fix whatever it was that was broken between us.

Box and bouquet in hand, I went to her room and knocked on her door, waiting patiently for her to open up. I knocked three times but no one answered.

“Athena, it’s me Aiden. Please open the door, I just want to give you your present, i promise I won’t take long.

No response.

“I know you’re still awake, please let me in.

Still no response

I could only hear eerie silence on her floor and even my wolf did not detect any movement in the room.

Was she asleep already? No, that was impossible. Athena gets really excited on her birthdays and when she’s excited, she cannot sleep. She always stayed awake the nights to her birthday.

Or was she planning to ignore me the whole day?

I knocked on her door again.

“Athena, please open the door. I’ll only give you your present and then I’ll leave, I promise.

Nothing

“Okay, I’m going to count until five and if you don’t open up, I’ll take it that you’ve given me permission to enter your room.”

There was still no response so I took it as a cue.

“One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Athena, I’m coming in.

I grabbed the door knob, twisted it and pushed the large door open, careful not to make so much noise. She already knew it was me but I didn’t want it to look like I was barging in. I looked around but there was no one in the room.

Her bathroom was empty and so was her dressing room. Even her scent had faded from the room which indicated that she had been gone for a long time.

I checked the entire floor and even went down to the basement where she loved to hide whenever we played hide and seek. But she wasn’t there.

I called out her name as I searched but got no response. Where was she?

I scanned the kitchen, hoping she had changed her mind and had decided to celebrate her birthday after all, perhaps she was checking in on the preparations. But she wasn’t there either and no one had seen her.

Heck where could she be?

If I were with my pack, i would have woken up the entire pack house and sent them in search of her, maybe even calling on the warriors too. But this wasn’t my pack, it was hers and I couldn’t act recklessly.

This was her territory, she grew up here and knew the place like the back of her hands so she couldn’t possibly get lost in here. That was what I kept telling myself so I would calm down.

This did nothing to ease the frustration I felt though. I was helpless and I hated that feeling, hated not being able to do anything, Hayes having no control over situations especially when it had to do with people I loved. And Athena was precious to me.

“Let me find her.” Sabre whispered to me

Sabre tried to calm my raging mind. He was the opposite of me. He always reminded me to keep calm and think about my actions whenever I acted on impulse. Sabre was calm even in desperate situations such as this, and he always helped me get things done right.

I let him take over my mind and body and shifted into my wolf form so that I could search for her. She was probably there, under our favorite tree. It was the only place she would go to. It was close to a little stream that reflected the moon at night. She loved the view and came here most nights. She definitely would be there on her birthday.

I growled as the place came into full view but I couldn’t catch a glimpse of her. I couldn’t smell her either. Where was she?

I wanted to take over and run the entire forest in search of her but Sabre wouldn’t let me. He did his best to stay in control and prevent me from making a scene. But I needed to find her, I didn’t care what I had to do.

I might actually create a scene if I didn’t find her fast.

Then it hit me, the smell of roses mixed berries entered my nose and instantly calmed my mind. In seconds, my wolf and I inhaled the scent, like it was the only air we could breathe.

Mate.

My wolf’s words snapped me back into reality and I realized that we were already on all fours, paws racing towards the source of the scent.

No! I couldn’t find my mate now, I had to find Athena

Before long, I saw a white wolf racing in the same direction as us and Sabre immediately knew she was the one we were looking for.

But wait

Why was she running away from us and not towards us? I used more of my speed and in no time, I was right behind her. I jumped and landed right over her, trapping her between me so she wouldn’t move and then I saw her dark blue eyes. They were beautiful and mesmerizing.

Her eyes pulled me in and it seemed as though I was staring into my world, hers and mine had become one.

But something unexpected happened.

The wolf turned her face away from me, avoiding my gaze. She reminded me of someone.

I guess I knew exactly who this she wolf was.
