Scarlett's POV

The door bell chimed as another customer waltzed in yelling his order as he settled into an empty table.

Fiona was on it immediately, maneuvering around me as I wiped down the counter with one hand, the other sliding a beer towards a snarling shifter who'd been complaining about the poor service since he walked in.

That was five minutes ago.

“Here's your beer, Randy. Hopefully it does something about that shitty attitude.”  I said stalking off before he could retort.

I grabbed a tray and new paper towels, eyeing the group gathered at the center table raving, obnoxiously about some game as I walked by. I hadn't even settled into cleaning the empty table when two of them started to shove each other, nearly tumbling their table of glass and rum.

“Easy fellas,” I stepped in gesturing towards their table, “You break it, you buy it. You bleed on it, you clean it.”

A few laughs rippled down the bar, but I wasn't joking. I had too much riding on every little penny I made out of here to lose it to a bunch of Others with too much alcohol and not enough common sense.

I resumed down the counter collecting empty glasses for washing and preparing drinks for the next customer when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I ignored it, feigning focus on the cheap glassware I was cleaning until the buzzing stopped, my shoulder visibly loosening.

My eyes met Randy’s across the counter as the buzzing started again, a dull vibration against the sink where my thigh pressed against it.

He lowered his glass slowly and my brows knitted in anticipated annoyance, because I knew that he was about to say something stupid.

“Your ringtone sucks.”

“Fuck off, Randy.”

I sighed, my mood plummeting to hell when I saw the name dancing across the screen.

K

I swiped right, ducking into a relatively secluded corner of the pub and brought the phone to my ear.

“Hey Mr. Kazowski.” I sang painfully.

“Where my rent?” He barked angrily, voice booming through the speakers. “You say you pay rent on 15th. Today 15th.”

“I know Mr. Kazowski.” I said pressing a finger against my other ear to block our the noise. “I swear, I have your money. I'm just running a little late at the pub–”

“Excuse. Everytime excuse.” He cut in. “You better have money or else–”

“You'll kick my ass to the curb, I know. You'll get it first thing tomorrow morning, I swear.”

“No! You say 15th. I want money 15th.”

I sighed, “Alright. You'll get your money–”

The line went dead, a small click where the short man's voice should've been.

I sucked in a deep breath, standing there with my phone still pressed to me ears when I decided:

“I need a smoke.”

Outside the night air was clearer, free of booze, and sweat, and fried fish sticks that clung to the atmosphere of the pub inside. The noise inside was dulled by the hum of distant traffic and rustling trees.

I leaned with my shoulder against the brick wall of the pub, cupping a hand over the flame of the lighter as I lit the cigarette between my lips. It caught the flame, flickering at first, then burning. The dry smoke hit the back of my throat, making me cough.

In my head, I calculated the amount of cash I'd made for the day, from the pub and all the other part times. After rent and power, there should still be enough left to pay the interest on debts.

I blew out a ring of smoke.

Interests that weren't even fucking mine.

I rolled against the wall, so that my whole back was on it when I noticed I group of panther shifters at the edge of the lot. They were watching me, I knew because they weren't even trying to be subtle.

They hadn't crossed the boundary of the lot yet, but they were close enough that it made my skin prickle, unease settling beneath it.

I saw the deliberation leave their shoulders, just as they set off across the lot.

My fingers tightened around my cigarette. Great. Just what I needed.

I pushed off the wall, hollowing my cheeks against one final drag, but they'd cornered me before the smoke even left my lungs completely.

“Damn. Did you run?” I offered flatly.

They snickered like I had said the funniest shit, but I was more bothered by the way they continued into my orbit. They must've been six feet, or seven maybe? I don't know. Everything looked tall when you're just five feet five.

“You always smoke alone?” One of them asked. He had a scar across his lips.

I flicked ash from my cigarette and met his gaze without flinching. “You always all up in people's business?”

I snuffed out the cigarette against the brick wall and tossed it in the trash can a few feet away, pushing past them.

They did not like that.

The one who hadn't spoken pulled me back by the shoulder, his thick fingers digging into pale flesh.

Fuck! That's gonna bruise.

“Is there a problem here?” A deep voice came suddenly, drifting through the darkness.

From just beyond the shadowy recess, a towering figure stood, his silhouette outlined by the cool moonlight. He was lean, but with muscles in all the right places, with dark hair and dark eyes and plush lips set in a deep scowl.

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 33

Scarlett's POV The taste of cheap bourbon and desperation was still thick on my tongue as I pressed my lips against his. For a second, the world narrowed down to the scent of pine and cold rain, the heat of his body, and the agonizing, electric pull of a bond that he had spent months trying to kill. I could feel his heart hammering against his ribs, a frantic, rhythmic thrum that mirrored my own.Arlo stiffened, his entire frame locking up as if I’d shocked him. He didn't kiss me back, he didn't even move. He just stood there, frozen, while I clung to him like a drowning woman clutching a piece of driftwood."Stop it, Scarlett," he rasped, his voice a low growl of warning. He shoved me back, not violently, but with enough force to break the spell. I stumbled, my heels catching on the edge of a cardboard box, and I nearly fell. I looked up at him, my vision swimming, my heart aching with a void so deep it felt like a physical wound. The alcohol hadn't numbed the pain, it had only stri

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 32

Scarlett's POV The silence of my apartment was heavy, broken only by the rhythmic scritch scratch of packing tape being pulled across cardboard. The space, which had once felt like a sanctuary, now felt like a mausoleum for the life I was leaving behind. Every item I touched carried a memory, and every memory felt like a weight I could no longer carry.I looked around the small living room. My bookshelf, once filled with rare grimoires and worn novels, was half empty. I had already listed my vintage record player and several pieces of jewelry on the local community boards. The money wasn't much, but every cent was earmarked for the debt collectors. I wanted to leave this town with a clean slate, or as clean as a rejected hybrid could manage. I didn't want the ghosts of my financial failures to follow me across the border. As I folded a sweater, my hands trembled. The physical decline the healer had warned me about was becoming harder to mask. My joints felt stiff, and a persistent,

Scarlett's POV "I have a job to do," I replied, my voice flat. The man let out a sharp, mocking laugh, leaning over the counter to invade my personal space. "A job? You call this a job? Playing waitress to a bunch of Otmys while you pine for a mate who doesn't want you? It’s pathetic, really. You’re a hybrid, a mistake of nature, and you actually thought you were worthy of an Alpha’s mark."My grip tightened on the rag. The words stung, slicing through the fragile layer of composure I had spent all morning building. I felt the familiar prickle of inadequacy rising in my chest, the voice in the back of my mind whispering that he was right."Look at you," he continued, his voice dripping with disdain. "Trembling. You can barely hold a cloth. You’re a liability, I. A broken, rejected little thing. You’re lucky Arlo even lets you breathe the same air as him. You’re nothing more than a smudge on the pack’s reputation."I stopped scrubbing. I looked up, my eyes meeting his. For a moment, t

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 30

Scarlett's POV The air in the healer’s sanctuary felt heavy, as if the very walls were saturated with the weight of the death sentence I had just received. I remained on the cot, staring at the ceiling, the number one year looping in my mind like a broken record. A year to live, or a year to beg for a mark from a man who looked at me as if I were a smudge of dirt on an otherwise pristine floor. The healer sighed, her expression softening just a fraction as she moved toward a shelf lined with amber glass bottles and bundles of drying roots. She selected three small vials, each containing a shimmering, iridescent liquid that looked like liquefied moonlight."These are not a cure," she said, her voice echoing in the sterile silence. "They are stabilizers. They will bolster your energy, mask the tremors in your hands, and keep your wolf from starving for a while. They will give you the strength to keep walking, but they will not stop the decay."I reached out, my fingers trembling as I t

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 29

Scarlett's POV The world didn't fade away slowly, it snapped. One moment, I was leaning against the cool mahogany of the bar, trying to push a glass of whiskey across the counter to a regular, and the next, the floor surged upward to meet me. There was a sudden, violent ringing in my ears, a flash of white light, and then a heavy, suffocating darkness that swallowed everything.I didn't remember falling. I only remembered the distant, panicked scream of my name and the sensation of strong arms catching me before my head hit the hardwood. When I finally drifted back to consciousness, the first thing I noticed was the smell. It wasn't the scent of stale beer, cheap cigarettes, and floor wax that defined my workplace. Instead, the air was thick with the cloying aroma of dried sage, crushed eucalyptus, and something metallic, like old blood and ozone. I blinked, my vision swimming, until the blurred shapes above me sharpened into focus.I was lying on a narrow cot covered in rough, linen

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 28

Scarlett's POV I stood frozen, the image of the Pack Hunter, that scarred, ash eyed ghost, seared into my mind. The air felt thin, cold, and suffocating. The realization that I had already been marked, that the predator was already circling my apartment, turned my blood to ice. I was no longer just a social pariah or a debt ridden hybrid, I was prey.I looked at Arlo. He was watching me, his expression unreadable, though there was a flicker of something, satisfaction, perhaps, or a grim sense of necessity, in his amber eyes. He knew exactly how this revelation would affect me. He had just handed me a death sentence and then offered to be the only one who could commute it.I let out a shaky breath, my shoulders sagging. The defiance I had tried to maintain for the last hour was crumbling under the weight of sheer terror. I was in a tough spot, no, I was in a grave, and the dirt was already falling on my face."Why?" I whispered, the word barely audible. I stepped closer to him, my ey
