Scarlett’s POV

The walk back to my apartment felt like a journey through a frozen wasteland. Every step I took seemed to echo the hollow thud of my heart against my ribs. The town square, usually just a bustling hub of supernatural and human activity, now felt like a stage where I had been publicly stripped and humiliated. I could still feel the phantom weight of Arlo’s gaze, as if he were looking at a piece of spoiled meat.

When I finally reached the door of my building, the smell of damp concrete and old grease hit me, a sensory reminder of exactly where I stood in the hierarchy of this world. I climbed the stairs, each creak of the wood sounding like a mocking laugh.

As I reached my landing, a heavy hand slammed against the doorframe next to my head, nearly knocking me over. I gasped, spinning around to find Mr. Kazowski looming over me. He was a squat, fleshy man with skin the color of old parchment and eyes that always seemed to be calculating how much more he could squeeze out of me.

"You're late with the utility surcharge, Scarlett," he wheezed, his breath smelling of cheap cigars and decay. "I don't care if you're working three jobs or ten. The money is due. Now."

I looked at him, and for a split second, the dormant wolf inside me, the one Arlo had called filth, snarled. A flash of heat surged through my veins, a primal urge to rip the smug expression off his face. But the heat died as quickly as it came, replaced by the crushing weight of my reality. I didn't have the money. I had spent the last of my savings on the medicine Arlo had used to patch me up, thinking it was an investment in a future that had just been incinerated.

"I'll have it by Friday, Mr. Kazowski. I'm picking up extra shifts at the pub," I whispered, my voice trembling.

He sneered, leaning in closer. "Friday. Not Saturday. Not Sunday. If the envelope isn't under my door by Friday noon, your pathetic little belongings will be decorating the sidewalk. I've already got a line of people wanting this unit, even if it is a dump."

He shoved past me, his shoulder hitting mine with unnecessary force. I stumbled back against my door, sliding down the wood until I hit the floor. I curled into a ball, pressing my forehead against my knees, and finally, the dam broke.

I sobbed, ugly, racking heaves that tore through my chest. I cried for the mother who had abandoned me to a life of debt and shame. I cried for the wolf inside me that was waking up only to be told it was a mistake. But mostly, I cried for the bond.

The mate bond is supposed to be the ultimate sanctuary. It is the one thing in a shifter's life that is absolute, a cosmic promise that you are not alone, that there is one soul in the entire universe designed to fit perfectly with yours. To have that promise extended and then violently snatched away is a psychic amputation. I felt as if a limb had been torn from my body, leaving a raw, bleeding stump where my heart used to be.

I am nothing, I thought, the darkness of the hallway closing in. I am a hybrid, a debtor, a servant. I am exactly what he said I was.

                               •••

I spent the next two days in a state of catatonic misery. I went to the pub, I poured the drinks, I wiped the sticky counters, and I smiled mechanically at the regulars. Fiona tried to talk to me, her eyes flashing with a protective fury, but I couldn't even look at her. How could I tell her that the defiance she had encouraged had only led to a more brutal slaughter of my spirit?

"He's a jerk, Scarlett," Fiona told me during a break, her voice low. "You are better off without a man who values a bank account and a bloodline over a soul."

"It doesn't matter if I'm better off," I replied, my voice sounding like it belonged to someone else. "The bond doesn't care about morality, Fiona. It just wants him. My wolf... she doesn't care that he's a jerk. She just wants to go home. And he told her she doesn't have one."

That was the cruelest part. The hybrid nature of my existence meant my wolf was more intuitive, more emotionally raw. She didn't see the arrogant Alpha or the social climber, she saw the other half of her spirit. Every time I closed my eyes, I could feel the ghost of his scent, cedar, rain, and something metallic and sharp, calling to me from across the town. It was a torture designed specifically for me.

That night, the pub was packed. A group of wolf shifters from a neighboring territory had come in, and the tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife. They were loud, territorial, and smelling of aggression, my skin prickling with that familiar, unsettling sensation as I served them.

Then, the door opened.

Arlo walked in.

He wasn't alone. He was accompanied by a woman who looked like she had stepped off the cover of a high society supernatural magazine. She was a pure-blood wolf, her silver hair cascading down her back in perfect waves, her eyes a piercing, icy blue. She clung to his arm with a possessive grip, her scent, something floral and cloying, like lilies at a funeral, filling the space around them.

My heart stopped, the air leaving my lungs in one sharp gasp.

Arlo didn't look at me, not at first. He led the woman to a VIP booth, his movements fluid and commanding. He looked happy. Or, at least, he looked satisfied. He had found the "lineage and grace" he had claimed I lacked.

I stood frozen behind the bar, a half-filled glass of whiskey in my hand. I could feel the eyes of the other patrons on me, the whispers starting to ripple through the crowd. They knew. The news of the "hybrid mate" and the public rejection had spread through the shifter community like wildfire.

"Scarlett! Table four needs more napkins!" my manager barked.

I moved on autopilot, my legs feeling like lead. As I walked past their booth to get to the kitchen, I felt a sudden, sharp spike of emotion through the bond. It wasn't love. It wasn't even hate. It was a flicker of... amusement?

I paused, my gaze involuntarily drifting toward Arlo. He was looking at me. His eyes were cold, devoid of any warmth, but there was a smirk playing on his lips. He leaned in and whispered something into the silver haired woman's ear, and she let out a light, melodic laugh, casting a disdainful glance my way.

It was a calculated move. He hadn't just rejected me, he wanted to ensure I watched him replace me. He wanted to rub the purity of his new companion in my face, to remind me that I was a footnote in his story, a glitch to be corrected and forgotten.

The wolf inside me didn't whimper this time. Instead, something shifted. The grief, which had been a heavy, suffocating blanket, began to condense. The pain didn't go away, but it transformed into something cold and sharp.

I realized then that Arlo didn't just want a pure mate, he wanted a mirror. He wanted someone who reflected his own arrogance and perceived superiority.

I walked back to the bar, my posture straightening. I didn't look at him again. I focused on the glass in my hand, the way the amber liquid caught the light.

"You okay, Scar?" Fiona whispered, leaning in.

"I'm fine," I said, and for the first time in a week, I almost believed it.

But the realization didn't stop the physical toll. As the night wore on, the presence of another high ranking wolf in the room, combined with the proximity of my rejected mate, began to trigger a reaction in my hybrid blood. My skin started to itch, a deep, subcutaneous burn that made me want to claw my own flesh. The "prickling" sensation I had felt since I first met him had evolved into a fever.

By the time my shift ended at 3:00 AM, I was shaking. I stumbled out of the pub and into the cool night air, leaning against the brick wall to catch my breath.

"Scarlett."

I froze. The voice was deep, commanding, and far too close. I turned to see Arlo standing a few feet away. He was alone now, the silver-haired woman must have left already.

"What do you want, Arko?" I asked, my voice flat. "Come to tell me my shoes are too cheap for your liking? Or maybe you want to check if I've paid my electricity bill this month?"

He frowned, his eyes scanning my pale face and the way I was trembling. For a fleeting second, a flash of something, concern? guilt?, crossed his features, but it was gone in an instant, replaced by that familiar mask of indifference.

"You look like you're coming apart," he said coldly. "Your hybrid instability is showing. It's pathetic, really. You can't even handle the presence of a pure-blood without falling apart."

I let out a dry, hacking laugh. "I'm falling apart because the bond you ripped open is still bleeding, you arrogant prick. But don't worry, I'm learning how to live with the scar."

He stepped closer, his scent overwhelming me, triggering a wave of longing that made my knees weak. He reached out, his fingers grazing my jawline. The touch was electric, sending a jolt of pure, unadulterated desire through my system. My wolf leaped forward, begging for the contact, craving the touch of her mate.

But as his fingers lingered, his voice dropped to a cruel whisper.

"Don't mistake a biological reflex for affection, Scarlett. You are a curiosity. A mistake of nature. And no matter how much your wolf screams for me, you will never be enough. You will always be the girl in the slum, paying off her mother's sins."

He pulled his hand away as if I were contaminated.

"The next time I see you, I want you to remember exactly who you are. And more importantly, who you are not."

He turned and walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the alley.

I sank to the ground, the cold pavement seeping through my clothes. I looked up at the moon, the pale orb that governed our lives, and I felt a sudden, searing hatred for the laws of the moon. I hated the bond. I hated the purity. And I hated the fact that, despite everything, a part of me still yearned for him.

Scarlett's POV I spent the next three days in a haze of numbness, moving through my life like a ghost. Every time I closed my eyes, I heard the slam of that door and the echo of Arlo’s voice calling me an impurity. The bond, once a golden thread of hope, had turned into a jagged piece of glass embedded in my chest, slicing deeper every time I took a breath.I didn't have the luxury of a complete breakdown. I had bills that didn't care about my broken heart and a landlord who viewed my existence as a mere source of revenue."Scarlett, you're staring again. The glass is going to crack if you keep gripping it like that."I blinked, coming back to reality. I was standing behind the bar at the local pub, my knuckles white as I held a pint glass. Fiona was leaning over the counter, her eyes full of concern. "I can't stop thinking about it, Fiona," I whispered, my voice sounding hollow. "He looked at me with such... disgust. Like I was something he'd stepped in on the street."Fiona reache

Scarlett's POV The air in the room felt heavy, saturated with the scent of blood and something primal. I focused on the task at hand, trying to keep my hands from shaking as I dipped the cloth into the basin of warm, soapy water. The gash on my forearm wasn't deep, but it was jagged, a parting gift from the chaos of the night.Arlo stood close. Too close. Every time he shifted his weight, I could feel the heat radiating off his body, a physical force that seemed to warp the air around us. I had spent years perfecting my mask of indifference, building a life in this town where I was the one in control, the one who knew every secret and every shadow. But with him, the mask was cracking.I pressed the damp cloth against the wound, and a sharp hiss of pain escaped my lips. I flinched, my muscles tightening, and in that split second of vulnerability, Arlo reached out, fingers brushing against mine as he took the cloth from me, his touch light but electric. The moment our skin met, the wor

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 3

Scarlett's POV The worst of the pub rush had finally passed. The air still thrummed with leftover noise, scraping chairs and slurred laughter, but the frantic energy was gone. My body ached all over and my elbow and finger joints made a popping sound every time I moved them, a trademark from the constant mixing and stirring I'd been doing all day. And frankly, I was grateful to just sit behind the sink and do dishes as long as I wasn't moving, but a girl could only dream.Fiona leaned over the bar counter minutes later, sliding a note pad across the tapered counter tile.“We got an order here.” She announced, settling onto one of the stools with a tired sigh.I stepped out from behind the bar sink, wiping away soap suds from my hands on a towel as I joined her at the counter. I scanned the note pad, lips twitching with impression at the detail of the order.“Exotic.” I hummed, already turning towards the liquor shelves, wincing a little at the pain around my shoulder as I reached fo

  • The Alpha's Rejected Hybrid    Chapter 2

Scarlett's POV The air in the square seemed to thicken, the oxygen replaced by a heavy, oppressive weight that pressed down on everyone present. It happened the moment he stepped forward, the sheer aura of dominance radiating from him like a physical blow. The panther shifters, who only moments ago had been sneering and circling me with predatory confidence, suddenly faltered. Their pupils dilated, and their shoulders hunched. The instinctive, primal fear of a superior predator surged through them one by one an they backed away, their movements jerky and wary, as if they were stepping on thin ice. The aggressive posturing vanished, replaced by a desperate need to put distance between themselves and the stranger.I watched them retreat, a flicker of satisfaction crossing my face, though it was quickly overshadowed by my curiosity about the man. He stood there, an imposing figure whose presence seemed to swallow the light around him. He was dressed in a way that suggested wealth and po

Scarlett's POVThe door bell chimed as another customer waltzed in yelling his order as he settled into an empty table.Fiona was on it immediately, maneuvering around me as I wiped down the counter with one hand, the other sliding a beer towards a snarling shifter who'd been complaining about the poor service since he walked in.That was five minutes ago.“Here's your beer, Randy. Hopefully it does something about that shitty attitude.” I said stalking off before he could retort.I grabbed a tray and new paper towels, eyeing the group gathered at the center table raving, obnoxiously about some game as I walked by. I hadn't even settled into cleaning the empty table when two of them started to shove each other, nearly tumbling their table of glass and rum.“Easy fellas,” I stepped in gesturing towards their table, “You break it, you buy it. You bleed on it, you clean it.”A few laughs rippled down the bar, but I wasn't joking. I had too much riding on every little penny I made out of
