Chapter 4

Selene's POV

The moment I walked away from Kieran, I felt the bond strain inside me like a thread about to snap.

It didn't break. Not entirely.

But it hurt.

I clenched my jaw, refusing to let the pain consume me. I had made my choice. I had to stand by it.

My legs carried me deeper into the forest, away from him, away from the weight of his burning stare.

The air was cool, but my skin felt too hot, like my body was waging a silent war against itself.

I knew why.

Rejecting a mate wasn't natural. It went against every instinct woven into a werewolf's being.

And yet, I had done it.

I just hadn't realized how much it would cost me.

A sharp ache pulsed in my chest, but I ignored it, forcing myself to focus on the path ahead. I needed to get back to my pack. I needed to remind myself why I had chose this.

Why I had chosen freedom over fate.

But as I pushed forward, a strange sensation crept over me. The tiny hairs on my arms stood on end, my wolf stirring uneasily beneath my skin.

We were being watched.

I stopped walking, my ears straining for any sound beyond the rustling trees.

Silence.

Too much silence.

The forest had gone still in a way that wasn't natural. No insects. No wind. No movement.

I exhaled slowly, my fingers twitching at my sides. "Who's there?"

For a moment, nothing.

Then -

A dark laugh. Low. Mocking.

I spun around just as a figure emerged from the trees.

He was tall, his presence heavy with something dark and ancient. He moved with the confidence of a predator who knew his prey couldn't outrun him.

And when his golden eyes locked onto mine, a shiver ran down my spine.

"Selene Everhart," he mused, his voice a lazy drawl. "I was hoping we'd meet."

My heart slammed against my ribs. "Who are you?"

The man's lips curled into a smirk. "Darius Nightshade."

The name sent ice through my veins.

Alpha of the Nightshade Pack.

Ruthless. Dangerous. And known for destroying anyone who stood in his way.

What the hell was he doing here?

Darius took a slow step forward, hands in his pockets like he had all the time in the world.

"You made quite the bold move tonight," he said. "Rejecting Kieran Blackwood? That takes guts."

I forced my expression to stay neutral. "It was my choice."

His smirk deepened. "Oh, I know. That's what makes it so interesting."

I didn't trust the gleam in his eyes.

I took a careful step back. "What do you want?"

Darius titled his head, studying me like I was a puzzle he was trying to solve.

Then, to my horror, he chuckled.

"You, little wolf."

My pulse spiked.

No.

Darius took another step forward, his voice almost amused. "You rejected Blackwood, which means you're fair game now. Unclaimed. Vulnerable."

A growl built in my throat. "I don't belong to anyone."

"Not yet."

Before I could react, he was suddenly in front of me, moving faster than I thought possible.

I gasped, stumbling back, but he didn't touch me. He just watched, as if waiting to see how I'd react.

My breath came too fast. My wolf thrashed inside me, but she was weaker than she should have been.

Darius noticed.

His smirk widened. "You feel it, don't you?" he murmured. "The way rejecting the bond is breaking you?"

I clenched my fists, refusing to show weakness.

Darius exhaled through his nose, like he was almost disappointed. "Don't worry, little wolf. I'm not here to take you. Not yet."

I swallowed hard. "Then why are you here?"

He stepped back, but his golden eyes gleamed with something that made my stomach twist.

"To warn you."

I frowned. "Warn me about what?"

His smirk faded. "Kieran Blackwood."

My heart stuttered. "What about him?"

Darius leaned in just enough that I could feel the heat of his breath against my skin.

"You think you rejected him? You think that means you're free?" His voice dipped lower, almost taunting. "He's an Alpha, Selene. And Alphas don't let go."

The words sent ice down my spine.

Because no matter how much I wanted to deny it...

I knew he was right.

Kieran wasn't done with me. Not by a long shot.

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate   Chapter 12

Kieran's POV The moment Finn stormed into my office, I knew something was wrong. "You're not going to like this," he said, his voice tight with barely contained frustration. I set down the glass of whiskey I'd been holding and leveled him with a stare. "Then don't waste time. Spit it out." Finn exhaled sharply, shoving a hand through his hair. "It's Selene." Her name was enough to send a bolt of tension through my spine. I hadn't seen her since the night she ran, but she had haunted my thoughts like a ghost that refused to rest. I had spent years hardening myself against weakness, against distractions, but she had been the one thing I couldn't bury no matter how much I tried. I leaned back in my chair, keeping my expression unreadable. "What about her?" Finn's jaw tightened. "She met with Darius... again." The words took a second to sink in. The air in the room seemed to shift, growing heavier, hotter. I went still. "Come again?" "She's still making contact with

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate   Chapter 11

Selene's POV The moment I stepped back onto Everhart territory, I felt the weight of my decision settle over me. The confrontation with Darius had been a gamble - one I wasn't entirely sure had paid off. I had gone there as a show of strength, to prove that I wouldn't be intimidated. But the way he had looked at me, the way he had spoken... It left a bitter taste in my mouth. I hated that I had needed to meet with him in the first place. Hated that I had to consider an alliance with him at all. But what choice did I have? The Blackwood Pack would never accept me now. Kieran had made that clear. He didn't want me as his mate. He didn't want me at his side. And yet... I swallowed hard, trying to shake the lingering memory of him - the way his golden eyes burned into me even as he rejected me. The way my wolf still ached for him, despite everything. I needed to push those thoughts away. The moment I crossed the threshold of my pack's main hall, my mother's voice rang

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate   Chapter 10

Selene's POV Darius Nightshade leaned back in his chair, a slow smirk curving his lips as he studied me. His office was dimly lit, the scent of burning wood and aged whiskey filling the air. It was nothing like the sleek, controlled atmosphere of Kieran's territory. Darius's domain was rawer - wilder. I stood in front of his desk, my arms crossed over my chest, trying to suppress the unease curling in my stomach. The man in front of me was dangerous. He always had been. And now, I had willingly stepped into his den. "Selene Everhart," Darius mused, tapping his fingers on the wooden surface. "I have to say, I didn't expect this." I lifted my chin. "I came to talk, not play games." His smirk deepened. "Funny. I thought that's all you and Kieran ever did - play games." My wolf bristled, but I forced myself to remain still. "I rejected him," I said evenly. "My loyalty is to my own pack. Not his." Darius chuckled, the sound low and amused. "Oh, I know. The whole damn t

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate   Chapter 9

Kieran's POV I knew something was wrong the moment Finn stormed into my office. Not wrong in the usual way - the kind of wrong that came with managing a pack, handling rogues, or preparing for war. This was different. Finn's eyes were sharp, his energy tense. His hands clenched at his sides like he was barely holding himself back. I set my whiskey glass down with deliberate calm. "What happened?" Finn didn't speak right away. He was waiting. Choosing his words carefully. I didn't have the patience for that. "Spit it out." My voice came out rougher than I intended. He exhaled sharply. "It's Selene." I went still. My fingers curled against the edge of the desk. "What about her?" Finn hesitated for half a second. Then he said it. "She's with Darius." The air in the room shifted. A slow, cold rage started building in my chest. I pushed away from my desk, standing to my full height. "Explain." Finn's jaw tightened. "She went back to her pack, and Darius was

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate   Chapter 8

Selene's POV Darius Nightshade leaned casually against the doorframe, looking completely at ease - like he belonged here. Like he owned the place. And for the first time in my life, my father didn't tell him to leave. A cold, sinking feeling settled in my gut. "What the hell is he doing here?" I demanded, my voice sharper than I intended. Darius smirked. "That's no way to greet an old friend, Selene." "You are not my friend," I snapped. His golden eyes gleamed with amusement, and his smirk only widened, as if my hostility entertained him. "No? That's funny. Because your father and I were just having a very... interesting conversation about your future." I turned to my father. "What is he talking about?" Alpha Ronald folded his arms across his broad chest, his silver eyes assessing me. "You left me with very few choices, Selene." A chill ran through me. "Choices for what?" Darius stepped forward, his presence suffocating, his scent thick with dominance and somet

  • The Alpha's Rejected Mate   Chapter 7

Selene's POV The moment I crossed into Everhart territory, I felt the shift in the air. The trees seemed taller, their branches whispering secrets I didn't want to hear. Shadows stretched along across the forest floor, deeper, the weight of my choice pressing down on me like an iron collar. I was home. And yet, I had never felt more lost. The guards at the border recognized me immediately, their sharp eyes flickering with curiosity - and something else. Pity. They knew. Of course, they did. News traveled fast between packs, and nothing spread quicker than the scent of rejection. I kept my back straight, my chin high, refusing to show weakness as I strode past them. Let them talk. Let them whisper about how the Alpha's only daughter had walked away from the bond that was supposed to define her. I had made my choice. Now, I had to live with it. As I approached the heart of the pack's territory, the towering structure of the Everhart packhouse came into view,
