For a second, we just looked at each other. His look held something raw respect, hunger, maybe even fear.

Then he stepped back, his tone changing. “That’s enough for tonight.”

I frowned. “You’re leaving?”

“For now. You need rest.”

“Kieran”

He stopped at the door. “Yes?”

“Do you believe me?” I asked. “That I didn’t ask for any of this?”

He turned slightly. “You didn’t have to ask, Nova. It’s in your blood.”

And then he was gone.

When morning came, the stress between us hadn’t faded. If anything, it grew.

I found him outside the training ground, speaking quietly with one of the guards. When he saw me, his lips curved.

“Ready to try again?” he asked.

I nodded, though my heart pounded. “As ready as I’ll ever be.”

He moved toward me, every step controlled, measured. “Good. Because today, you stop being afraid.”

I bit my lip. “And if I can’t?”

“Then I’ll make you angry instead.”

“Angry?”

“It works faster.”
